Points of Concern: UGA
Going into the Georgia game, I am extremely excited about the opportunities in front of our football team. We have played well this season and have earned a high ranking. That said, I have several points of concern.
1. Our pass rush-
We're not getting to the quarterback enough and Matthew Stafford has such a strong arm that he can pick us apart if we don't. This must change.
2. Vulnerability to screens-
Georgia is a notorious screen team and yesterday Arkansas showed that we are still vulnerability to this type of pass play.
3. Our pass blocking-
While we haven't given up many sacks, our opponents get to JPW a little bit faster than one would like. Georgia has a dominating pass rush. I seriously doubt we'll be able to pound the ball on them for 200+ yards, so we're going to have to throw and we're going to have to block well when we do so.
4. Our kickoff coverage-
Point blank, it needs to improve. We're giving up too much kickoff return yardage.
5. JPW-
I do think he has managed games well, but other than parts of the Clemson game, he hasn't exactly shredded opposing defenses. I think we all know that Georgia has an awesome rush defense. No matter how well we run the ball, JPW will have to make throws and minimize incomplete passes.
6. Creativity in offensive playcalling-
I realize that Jim McElwain has more in his playbook than he has shown and that he's a good enough coach not to call plays prematurely, but I hope we are not so predictable on first and second down. I know Saban and Co. don't want to put the game on JPW's shoulders, but I honestly think that UGA has too good of a defense for us to simply try to run right over. Hey, I'd love it if we did and I'd be the first one to admit I was wrong, but my gut tells me we're going to have to pass well to beat them. Nobody wants to see Alabama in a lot of 3rd and 9's next Saturday. Hopefully Coach calls a good game and makes it easier on the players to succeed.
No matter what, something has got to give. They're undefeated and ranked third. We're undefeated and ranked ninth as of this moment. If we can manage to win a game like this on the road, we'll know our team is for real. It's going to take a great effort. I know we have it in us. Roll Tide, Roll!

All excellent points...
….and all ones we’ll have to address this week while previewing UGA. Talking to Nico yesterday, we were both of the opinion that whipping up on Arkansas was suspiciously easy and that we didn’t play very well in a lot of respects, but at the same time the fact that we are whipping hell out of people has to say something positive about our team. We’ll really know what we have on Saturday.

yeah Todd
me and a buddy had this talk yesterday during the night cap games. yes, we dominated Arkansas, but was that a good thing? Both of us agreed that it was, we didnt have to show much of our offenses so UGA is basically looking at our film watching us run 5 different rushing plays and like 3 pass plays from 4 different formations. wow.
We also though that is Arkansas, Clemson, WKU that bad? No, our Defense made them look that bad. Tulane was a let down game, shall be excluded from this. Our Defense is nasty, so watch out. Ill post something about our opinions and thoughts maybe Wed so look for it

I agree
I’d rather lose ugly than win pretty. I don’t want to sound like a jerk, but being a high school coach, I spend my Saturday’s evaluating film, grading players, and breaking down my team’s next opponent, so I guess I look at what wasn’t good before I look at what was. That said, there certainly were a lot of positives to take from the game.

Correction:
I goofed. I meant to say I’d rather “win ugly than lose pretty”.

UGA
Good points. I am pretty confident that we will be able to put a good pass rush on Stafford with a great matchup of our line vs. their young guys. Like you said though, I am concerned on the short screen passes that have worked to everyone’s advantage so far but at least we give those up and not the 80yd bombs. Moreno better tighten his chinstrap because I’m pretty sure the defense will be ready for this game.
As for the offense, if we get the running game to be a constant factor, then the plays should be lifted off of JP as in the Clemson game. If not, look for the tightends to get a lot of touches with some random shots downfield because the short stuff will be hard to manage against this defense.
I really feel we have a great shot at this game and for our guys to do so well this weekend, I hope it has given them a great boost of confidence to go in and compete with this Georgia team.

Different opinion
I think this game looks alot like the Clemson game. Yes UGA is SEC and Clemson Is ACC but hold up. Clemson Great running game but a young O-line.. We shut it down. UGA great running game but a young O-line….Clemson great QB we shut him down….UGA same deal….UGA has a bigger D-line but i think with all our starters back we can handle them….JP has to have a ballgame period…the running game will show up….but we cant run the hole time or they will just stack the line….I think it comes down to JP and Special teams…..ALABAMA WINS 34-17 Print the papers headlined Sabans young Tide on a ROLL….

i wouldn't
compare Georgia to Clemson. Stafford is much better than Harper, and Green looked awesome the other night. I’ll take Moreno over Thunder and Lightning any day. On top of that, Georgia is going to play harder than Clemson did and not just fold. I think we can pull it out, but I don’t think it’ll be a cakewalk.

1st Downs
Hey everyone…new signee here on RBR… I just like to add something on the 1st down situation on both sides of the ball…sure, we only had like 4 of 11 of new sets of downs, but taken into account bursting of 80, 60yrd, etc touchdown runs, if those were stopped short of being scores…they would have been 1st downs…but thank goodness they werent…its awsome to see that kind of explosiveness coming from the Tide! I havent seen that since the Pothro season. I agree, JPW needs to get a bit more accurate(Clemson form) but as long as he dosent F up big time(LSU, Miss St. ’07…remember those doozies?) we should do well come Sat…I also hope our defense can do well on the 3rd and long situation next week…i hate seeing them work that hard to get em 3rd and 9, 10, 12,16, etc….and blow it due to those pesky screen passes…but i was diggin that goal line stand!

yep
that was huge, and so was the roughing the kicker on the opening drive too, if both of those went the other way this could have been a close game.

True...
Stafford might be able to put the hurt on us, but a HUGE component of the Dawgs success thus far has obviously been Moreno. Both of those components function well, and the Tide walks out of Athens 4-1. One of those components get slowed down, or even shut down, I say we scrape by. And I wanna see Knowshon Moreno try to hurdle The Legend. Or Chapman for that matter.
And based on what we saw against the Hogs, Stafford may not have such an easy road if Arenas or Woodall get between him and Massaquoi.

we need a lot of draws...
and we need to screen also, to slow the pass rush…
if we keep playing the way we are on defense and our o-line continues to pound, we should be alright…

Does anyone here know Shon Moreno?
Does anyone know Shon Moreno? I don’t know Shon Moreno, and I don’t think I’d like to.
It’s going to take a great effort to win. Roll Tide, Roll!

Alternative UGA Points of Concern
Good read, and a lot it reads similar to what is worrying Georgia fans 1/3 of the way through the season. Our relative weaknesses, as I see them:
1. Kickoffs/Coverage – We’ve tried a couple different guys on KO’s due to true freshman Blair Walsh’s inconsistency. When we have kicked it well, our coverage has been somewhere between so-so and atrocious. Arenas might play a bigger role in this game than most people are expecting.
2. Pass Rush – I know you listed it as a strength, but it really hasn’t been thusfar. We’re sorely missing senior DT Jeff Owens, as he allowed our ends last year to take on lone blockers and eat QB’s alive during our 7-game winning streak to end the season. ®Freshman Justin Houston might be emerging, as he had a really nice game against ASU. We were not able to get consistent pressure on Dan LeFevour or Chris Smelley, so that’s a wait-and-see spot right now.
3. Tight End – Quite frankly, Tripp Chandler is a liability in the passing game. After a series of early drops last year, he came around and made some clutch grabs at the end of the year. However his dropsies have returned, and really kept the South Carolina game closer than it needed to be. Chandler strained his neck late in the ASU game and his status is pending for the Alabama game. That would mean a start for sophomore Bruce Figgins who is a blocking machine, but a question mark in the passing game.
This has all the makings of a low-scoring slugfest won by field position and turnovers. Should be an insane atmosphere too.

As a fan of football
and more so of UGA football, I commend you fans for taking this game seriously. This is going to be one heckuva game, I think the game of the year. This isn’t going to be about “The Better” team, heck, they’re both awesome teams, this is going to be a game about who makes the least mistakes or takes advantage of opportunities. I will be at the game pulling for the dogs but most of all, watching a game which many people will never have the opportunity to see again. I wouldn’t place a bet on this game no matter what because this game could be won by either team………..on “Any given Sunday”
Thanks for the opportunity to post here and I have all the respect in the world for the great program both teams have and wish everyone health during the game and all players giving 100% for the duration.
And by the way………I know Shon………..he’s one Bada** RB.. LOL, Best of luck to everyone!!
