New Year's Day Open Thread

hereSince the individual game threads generated so much interest yesterday [/sarcasm], here's the catch all for today, since this is actually a kind of boring slate for New Years anyway.  Game I'm most interested in?  Georgia and Michigan State, which seems horribly wrong.  Anyway, have at it all day.  I'm going back to bed.

Seriously...

We need to approach the ACC and see if we can trade South Carolina for Clemson. That bunch is an embarrassment.

my thoughts

exactly. Steve Spurrier and South Carolina are an embarrassment to the SEC. his team underachieves every year. especially in non-conference games.

Honestly...

I have to think that SOS may very well consider retirement after this one. It’s obvious that he is not going to do anything at all special at South Carolina, and honestly his team is getting worse, not better.

They’re 13-12 the past two seasons, they were blown out in the final three games of the season, he has a 1-3 record against Clemson, and they are going to lose a ton of key players at the end of this season. If they can just get to .500 next year, it will probably be a stretch.

Either way, the time is drawing near for ol’ SOS.

And making matters worse...

According to published reports by ESPN.com, cornerback Captain Munnerlyn and linebacker Eric Norwood have decided to leave early and enter the 2009 NFL Draft. It’s a very big loss for the Gamecocks because Munnerlyn was one of the conference’s best cornerbacks, and Norwood actually led the SEC in sacks this season.

The defense has been the only thing holding South Carolina together, and it looks like that will be gone now.

End of the 1st Quarter...

And already the USC D has given up more points than the ’92 D did against Miami.

USC is an embarrassment

But I am not sure that they have many players that the cannot afford to lose….including Munnerlyn who had a boneheaded personal foul early on in today’s debacle.

SOS needs a QB to run his offense and still hasn’t had a decent one at USC. It is his own fault for failure to recruit someone he can use, but Garcia and Smelley are definitely not the answer. Everyone knows that Spurrier never really liked recruiting much and with so many athletes in the State of Florida, you can get away with lighter hours on the recruiting trail there, but not in Carolina. He needs not only to get the best recruits in state, but needs to poach some players from Georgia too.

Not just QB...

SOS needs a QB to run his offense and still hasn’t had a decent one at USC.

Well, it’s not just the quarterback that is the issue with SOS. To be sure he does have poor quarterback play, but he also probably has the worst offensive line in the country, so-so tailbacks, and no true game-changers at the wide receiver position. Again, the quarterback position is a problem, but even if they got a great quarterback they’d still be in trouble because it would merely be a great quarterback stuck in a bad offense.

It’s just the whole nine yards… bad QB play, terrible offensive line, mediocre skill position players, and frankly an offensive scheme that is a bit outdated. Bottom line, he just needs to hang it up.

And you are right on recruiting and what he needs to do. He needs to lock down the state of South Carolina, and then make occasional ventures into northern Georgia, the Virginia Beach area, and eastern Tennessee to bring in more talent. The problem, though, is that he simply cannot do that. He’s losing many in-state recruiting battles to Clemson, and programs like Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and others are poaching talent from inside the state, and he really hasn’t had any success outside the state.

SOS

does that stand for Steve Overrated Spurrier?

VA Tech win will set them up for next season.

It will increase the buzz about the Chik Fil A game and help the Tide’s strength of schedule should we win as I would guess VA Tech will be close to the top 10 going into that game. Time will tell but that may prove a difference maker somewhere down the road.

And I agree that Spurrier would have to be thinking retirement also. The longer he stays the longer he tarnishes his record. Ugly stuff today.

VA Tech

They did only beat Cincy, which shouldn’t have shocked anyone. The experts love Taylor though…it will be a much better game than our exciting opener against Charleston Southern. Oh boy.
