Bama ranked #6 in ESPN Prestige Rankings

According to the article, there ranking was behind:

5- Nebraska

4- Notre Dame

3- Ohio State

2- USC

1- Oklahoma

Because of the very poor showing in the BCS era. What do you guys think about who were behind?

I forgot about the 75 words long thing so here it goes... also comment on what your plans are for super bowl sunday. Roll Tide, beat auburn, is this seventy five words yet? I guess not so here are three more words.

Yeah the BCS era has hurt us

But also the two probations by the NCAA didn’t help either…plus the coaching changes….We haven’t looked that great since 1992.

When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

Notre Dame is on the media's jock

But whatever.

If you look at the whole picture, I call Shenanigans. When was the last time Oklahoma won a BCS bowl? Notre Dame? Ohio State is constantly overrated, with only 1 NC in the last 50 years. Nebraska? Good team, but they have struggled lately as well. What was LSU, two time BCS champion? Florida?

This is why I don’t pay much attention to these publicity stunts by ESPN. They are biased in too many ways. Who cares what they say? Besides, not like we can argue with them. Yes, we have a ton of NCs, but haven’t had one in 16 years and have not won any BCS games. We gotta correct those issues, and honestly, other than gay ND, all of those teams ahead of us have won NCs since we last did.

At the end of the day, who cares what ESPN puts out there?

What Would Don Draper Do?

Further, where is Texas?

Honestly, how can we be ranked ahead of them? They have won 2 Rose Bowls in the last four years, a Fiesta Bowl, and whatever else. Also, I don’t think we have ever beaten them.

Well...

…Joe Namath says he scored…and we did tie them once…OK, I see your point.

Totally agree....

I stated down in my Fanshot about this...

That I bet we were about 20 points behind #5. Well guess what? We were 19 points behind Nebraska, which leads me to trying to find an individual to point my finger at to cost us a top 5 ranking. The only one coming to mind which cost us the 20 points we needed was Ryan Pflugner:

Based on the points system, you get 10 points for a major bowl win, and 10 points for a top 5 AP ranking. Pflugner’s PAT miss in the 1999 Orange Bowl not only lost the “major bowl game” for us, but we were currently ranked #5 in the AP, so winning would have obviously taken us up. Darn you Pflugner, darn you!

If anyone can think of another individual to cost us at least 20 points in the history of Bama, please share…

P.S. I realize that PAT would’ve only tied the game, and there was still potential to lose, but I like to think we would’ve won that game had my boy made a PAT.

Antonio Langham comes to mind...

If not for his crap.. the 92 season would have counted and we would have had another great season and another top 5 finish.

If Pflugner...

…makes that kick, the game is only tied, so we don’t know that Shaun Alexander and friends would have beaten Michigan and their no-name QB.

Other nominees:

1. Andre Smith’s ‘friend/family member’: Did you really need to talk to agents before the Sugar Bowl?
2. Whoever decided that a win in the Cotton Bowl doesn’t constitute a “major bowl win”. It sure used to.
3. Dennis Franccione: He lost to UGA and Auburn in 2002. Different distractions caused each.
4. Mike Dubose: God still loves you, but Bobby Lowder couldn’t have hurt us more.
5. Bill Curry: C’mon man, it’s just Auburn, you don’t have to be scared.

How about Logan Young, Jr.

because NCAA probations count against you as well.

If you erase those mistakes were #1…. oh and Bill Curry (shudder)

Yeah but

all that started with Debose..Without his actions, possible the last 10 years wouldn’t have been so rough.

Yeah but....

I still say that all the fans that faxed and called in his behalf had to take some of the blame because without the pressure, he would have never been hired.
But with that said, his lack of leadership started the fall as far as from the coaching staff is concerned, and until CNS, it was never truly fixed.

Well, are you gonna pull them pistols, or whistle dixie?

I'm more surprised

that USC wasn’t #1. I would’ve bet dollars to donuts on that one.

But as far as what cost us the top 5, I think it’s probably most to do with them only counting 7 NCs. But if you use the same metric for everyone, maybe I can’t complain. On the other hand, if they used the metric that gave us 12 (or more than 7) for everyone else as well, I think we’d still be higher than Nebraska, Oklahoma, and probably Notre Dame.

by Espyonage on Jan 23, 2009 3:59 PM CST reply actions

OU...

…has been more consistent since 1936 than USC. And we certainly have more NCs than Nebraska and OU, but four of them came before 1936. If you look at the entire history of college football, there’s no way you rank us behind OSU, Nebraska, or OU. ND, USC, Michigan, Texas, maybe, but they’re all debatable depending on what ‘metric’ you use.

The funniest thing about this list to me is OSU at #3. I bet the ND, Texas, and Michigan fans think so, too.

However, none of this matters as much as the decisions of several teenagers made public on Feb. 4th.

by NiceLittleSaturday on Jan 23, 2009 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

I wondered about that ...

and called shenanigans in my head for the decision to start after we had already won a few NCs. Why would you do that? If it’s the “best program of all time,” why not start at the beginning?

Alabama: The flagship of Southern Football..

There is one thing that we already knew and this ‘system’ confirmed: The Alabama Crimson Tide IS the flagship of southern football and has been from practically day 1.

And that includes Texas.

by yellowhammer on Jan 23, 2009 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Is Texas...

…southern? I thought their home state was an entity unto itself.

they think they are an entity unto themselves. They’re a little deluded, but mostly nice!

Congratulations

on an outstanding ‘08 season. It’s good to see Bama back in national contention (not to mention the strength added to the SEC West). Bowl game was disappointing but it was a successful season nonetheless. Well done.

Probably about right….but that’s okay, because we’re undefeated lifetime against #1, #2 and #3.
