Recruiting worries

With Lance Thompson at Tennessee now, how worried should we be about losing some of the player that he led recruiting efforts for; namely Trent Richardson and A.J. McCarron (D.J, Fluker too maybe? I can't remember). So far I haven't heard anything about A.J. but ESPN On The Trail reports that Trent Richardson was "stunned" by the Thomspson move and planned to remain taking visits all the way up to NSD.

So again, how worried should we be about some Thompson recruits becoming a little shaky?

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Only now do I realize...

…that my short bus brain was on high when I typed this.

The title should be Recruiting Worries. I’m sure it got the point across but nevertheless, this isn’t the Barn. We must uphold academia here, even if it was just a typo.

FYI...

You can go back and edit a Fan Post or Fan Shot. It’s a great feature. Also, for the spelling challenged(comer, I’m looking at you), if you will use Firefox, there is spell check. Of course, it will not help those who don’t know the difference between your and you’re or there, their, and they’re.

A.J. and D.J. are a sure lock. The only one I would be concerned would be Trent, but I’m sure he’ll stay with the Tide too. Lance was his recruiter, but it wasn’t his position coach. With Coffee gone, he can split snaps with Ingram as a true freshman.

Wouldn't

worry about Trent going to Tennessee. If he goes anywhere else it will probably be LSU since his brother is there. I’m fairly confident he’ll stick with Bama though.

by Zoltar on Jan 25, 2009 9:30 AM CST reply actions

Trent's Brother

Trent’s Brother goes to another school that is in the state of Louisiana. He does not go to LSU. Agree though, Alabama is still the team to beat.

by Kenny483 on Jan 25, 2009 9:44 AM CST up reply actions

No worries...

Fluker, McCarron, and others have affirmed their commitments.

Trent Richardson is still taking visits, but Saban asked him not to visit Tennessee, and then he canceled his visit. After that, he’s taking visits to Florida, LSU, and FSU, but it still looks good. Even most the Florida and LSU insiders are conceding him at this point.

Bottom line, Thompson’s departure hasn’t hurt us.

by outsidethesidelines on Jan 25, 2009 10:29 AM CST reply actions

I would be surprised

if Richardson signed with another team… Though there are some rumors circulating that he has “buddied-up” with RR and my sign where RR signs (which still appears to be between you guys and us)… But who knows. I certainly would like to have him here- we could use a quality RB with Dexter Pratt de-comitting and going to OKST.

I'm

Lance

told CNS that he would not go after the players he recruited for him. That was the topic of Jox FM the other day. Saban released that after Lance left. I do not think that Willis said the same to Gene when he left. I would screw him over for firing me in the first place, but that is just me

Every single . . .

Assessment I have made or seen shows ‘Bama bringing in as good or better than any SEC team. The difference will be negligible, and talent development will separate them and happens to be the specialty of three SEC coaches in my ignorant and unqualified opinion: Saban, Meyer and Nutt. Everyone else uses the talent to bludgeon, I don’t consider the rest in the league of your coach. Unless it is visor throwing, then only the evil one reigns.

We will have to see on Chizik and Kiffin, I know them not, but first glance has me betting on those three as superior again.

Talent development, look at Boise and Utah, can overcome talent. You guys have both the talent coming in and the guy to make it better. Give him three years, you’ll have insane depth and be “rolling” like only your dreams could hope for.

Florida

I live in Pensacola and my dad spoke with the head coach at Escambia High School after Richardson got back from Gainesville. Meyer told him that he would get beat to hell at Alabama and that wouldn’t happen in Florida’s offense. Apparently, it was a pretty convincing argument to the young man and my dad is worried as hell.

by monjardin on Jan 26, 2009 10:12 AM CST reply actions

I thought I read somewhere...

that D.J. Fluker had talked to Trent Richardson and said that if he came to Alabama that he wouldn’t get hit if he (Fluker) was on the line. If I was choosing where to go to school based on who was blocking for me and who would allow me to run for the most yardage, I think D.J. would definitely influence my decision. And since D.J. is a freshman he’ll most likely be at UA for at least three years (same as Richardson). Anyone else agree?

P.S. Doesn’t Richardson know that Tebow is Florida’s star running back?

by RammerJammer23 on Jan 26, 2009 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

Billy Bob Thornton...

…wouldn’t get beat to hell behind guys like D.J. Fluker, Mike Johnson, and James Carpenter, not to mention Kerry Murphy, and Bobby Massie (assuming the latter two end up on our OL). Meyer is slimy.

by NiceLittleSaturday on Jan 26, 2009 5:00 PM CST up reply actions

Huh?

How would a RB not get hit in Florida’s offense? Are they planning to just run toss sweeps, and have Trent step out of bounds instead of being hit? I think if anyone watched Florida’s offense they ran up the middle a good majority of the time, just like every other team that runs the ball. You tend to get hit when you run the ball, and I cannot imagine that would be a worry for Trent.

I think both offenses have the ability to run the ball extremely well, and they both use several different running backs. Obviously, the main difference is the sets that the two teams use. Clearly, Alabama is a more traditional pro-style system, and Florida is a spread shot-gun system.

While I would imagine that Alabama is still the team to beat for Trent; it is interesting that the staff is going harder after Eddie Lacy, the running back out of Louisiana. I am not saying that Alabama would not have taken a commitment from him before, but they have definitely increased the contact, and would seem to be the team to beat. Again, not saying that Trent will not becoming to Alabama, but ususally when a school starts recruiting another player at the same position heavily this late in the season, they are at least trying to hedge their bet.

by Kenny483 on Jan 26, 2009 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

Because

UF’s running backs just run out of bounds before they get hit. Tebow is the ‘up the middle’ guy.

When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

by bammer on Jan 26, 2009 2:19 PM CST up reply actions

Possibly

Though, most people thought Marcel Dareus would not qualify, and I heard anything about Brandon Lewis or Devonta Bolton not qualifying. I would not put much credit into anything regarding grades unless it is from the player or family member directly.

Also, if there is one definite, it is that you will hear that any player from Louisiana, that does not sign with LSU will not qualify (see Robby Green, Luther Davis, or Darrington Sentimore). Again, not saying that he will qualify, but there always seems to be rumors about players from that particular state who does not sign with LSU.

by Kenny483 on Jan 26, 2009 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

Lacy...

Lacy has some academic issues, but he is very close to qualifying now. Another tenth of a point on his GPA, or another point on his ACT would probably do the trick, and it helps that he is taking correspondence classes to make up for some bad grades he got as a freshman.

by outsidethesidelines on Jan 26, 2009 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

Bolton and Lewis...

In all fairness, neither one of those two were really a surprise in a sense.

We all knew that Bolton was going to be a borderline guy, and he just didn’t quite make it. Lewis, on the other hand, really got screwed by the Clearinghouse. Everyone thought he would qualify and rightfully so. After all, he made the ACT score he needed on two different occasions, and the Clearinghouse wouldn’t accept either one of them.

by outsidethesidelines on Jan 26, 2009 2:38 PM CST up reply actions

Last Year

The three guys who had the most questions about their eligibility, that I remember, were Alonzo Lawrence, Marcel Dareus, and Ivan Matchett.

The Clearinghouse to me has always been the most insidious thing the NCAA does. They seemingly never have to account for why the do not clear a player, and it can be something as simple as a player improving their score too much.

by Kenny483 on Jan 26, 2009 2:52 PM CST up reply actions

No

I am not sure what Florida games you are watching, but they ran the ball up the middle a lot. They do not do so out of the traditional I formation, but Harvin, Demps, and Rainey all ran the ball a lot up the middle. We are discussing the number 7 rushing offense in the nation. Florida ran the ball anyway they wanted. Florida was one of the best SEC offenses ever, last year.

Commitments who go to junior college

if a player signs with a certain school, doesn’t qualify, and decides to play at a junior college, how does that affect the original contract? Are they obligated to play for the original school if they transfer to a D1 school?

Last year we had either the #1 or #2 best recruiting class by all of the different groups. If I remember correctly we only had 1 – 5 star (Julio) and a few 3 star and the rest 4 stars.

This year we have about 5 or 6 5 stars and only 1 or 2 3 star and the rest are 4 stars and we are rated anywhere from 5th to 11th in these same guys rating.

What is the difference?
