He was outplayed by Pat White, nevertheless, this a good send-off for a kid who bought in and with average talent gutted his way to a fine overall career. Congrats JPW.

I honestly think he could do some good in the NFL.

He won’t be a Ryan or Flacco, but I have a feeling he’ll end up doing better than Croyle.

Ah, maybe, but honestly given Croyle’s career that wouldn’t be saying much. If he could just have four or five pretty good games in the NFL, that’d be more than Croyle has been able to accomplish.

All he has to do...

…to have a better career than Croyle is not get hurt for more than a four game stretch.

I think Croyle would be really good in the nfl

If he wasn’t so injury prone.

I am afraid his career may be coming to an end with Edwards being fired; Herman was a huge proponent of Croyle’s abilities.

Croyle's

body just wasn’t meant for football, unfortunately. He had major knee surgery in high school as a result of an injury, blew the other knee out at Alabama and has been hurt his entire NFL career. Oh well bet those checks look real nice.

I think Brodie COULD have done well in the NFL...

…if he had had a decent O line. Unfortunately, he went from a sucky college O line(Honk If You Sacked Brodie) to a sucky NFL O line. Damon Huard went out with an injury too. Larry Johnson’s issues contributed to the whole mess which made KC need to pass more.

It’s amazing John Parker stayed so healthy during his career. He probably played thru a lot of aches and pains with no complaints. He deserves our respect and appreciation for his hard work and leadership. I’m glad he showed his upside at the Senior Bowl. He represented Alabama well. I hope good things happen for him.

Rashad also had a good game with 5 tackles. He is listed here as the top draft prospect at safety.

JPW is indestructible

Never missed a game due to injury for 3 years. In spite of a zillion sacks in his junior year. Not a bad rec for a pro qback.

My memory might be foggy

Did he have the zillion sacks in 2006 or 2007? Anyway, he has taken a major beating and never missed a game.

Yep

And I don’t recall any game where he even missed a series. Very tough kid.

To clarify, White won Game MVP. JPW won offensive player of the game.

And no, I don’t know why they do it that way.

Because the more

trophies you pass out the more schools get to brag. But, we will take it, as will JPW.

it isnt

any suprise to me that he was an mvp! he was always a very talented QB and anyone who can set most all qb records at alabama deserves some credit!!! given he did play more than any other QB we have had he still was an outstanding player and whoever drafts him definitely wont be sorry!!! i think the jets should grab him since who knows when farve is leaving and i bet the legend would have some nice tips for our boy JPW!!!

The same things win that always won, and we just have a bunch of new excuses as to why we didnt achieve it!!! RDT

To put the record book in perspective

regarding this statement:

…and anyone who can set most all qb records at alabama deserves some credit!!!

I don’t mean to disparage JPW, but for some perspective, in his sophomore and junior seasons, he threw more passes than Joe Namath and Ken Stabler did during their entire combined careers at Alabama. In a historical context (especially one stretching several decades) quantitative statistics are a poor measure of a QB.

by Nico2.0 on Jan 27, 2009 9:27 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I didn't know...

…that there were any statistics that weren’t quantitative.

Anyway, we know the kid’s not Joe Namath, but it was nice to see a thread congratulating him on his five-year career dedicated to Alabama football. That his teammates chose him as a team captain this season speaks more loudly than anything else we can say about him. He’s got a lot of toughness and heart, and I wish him well.

by NiceLittleSaturday on Jan 27, 2009 9:44 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

In the strictest sense...

…all statistics are quantitative, but some are certainly more qualitative than others. The running back success rate for instance is a much better indicator of success than saying “he had 100 yard game today.” That 100 yard game could have one successful carry and 19 unsuccessful carries and unless that one carry won the game for them, then it really was a subpar performance.

In the case of “all-time stats” raw numbers simply don’t tell the story. Like I said, I’m not bashing JPW at all. I think he’s a good guy that played his heart out for the Tide and that’s all we can ask, but the “he owns the record book” stuff, while true, should be put in perspective.

by Nico2.0 on Jan 27, 2009 11:18 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I knew what you meant...

…I was just being an ass, ‘cause here we had this fine thread to a QB who took a whole lot of flak during his time at the Castone, and then you had to go and poop on it with perspective and context. I agree with everything you’ve said here. I just thought we could save the knocks on his career for every other thread that includes his name (like we have so far) and congratulate him for what he did well. I’ve heard a lot more love for past QBs like Brodie Croyle and Tyler Watts, yet JPW is the only one of the three who ever beat Auburn (as a starting QB).

I used to defend Freddie Kitchens a lot, too. I guess I’m just a sucker for players with average talent who work their butts off and show a lot of heart. I’ve always preferred that to the players who felt like something should be handed to them because they always hear how good they are.
