To the Gentle Folks of the Alabama Crimson Tide I’m sure that there will be Ute fans that will be “over-enthusiastic” after last night’s game between our beloved teams. I for one want to say what an honor it was to be able to play in a game with a team with such a storied history. While both our teams go into the black period (no college football until spring practice) I know both teams have questions to answer. For the Crimson Tide I see great things in store for your team and I believe that you will be in the hunt again next season. For the Ute’s I believe it will be a rebuilding year next year with the lost of some key seniors and a re-tooling year with new Defensive and Offensive Coordinators coming in. But I also believe that we will be in the mix in our conference too.
I ask one thing as I close the Utah Utes earned some respect last night for the non-automatic bid conferences but I request of you to encourage the automatic bid conferences to schedule non-automatic bid conference teams. I understand the realities of only wanting home games, but I also think that to be fair home and home games should be scheduled. Encourage your conference in this direction – all we are asking is to prove ourselves on the field anything else is just talk.
Who Am I Sir – A Utah Man Am I. GO UTES!

Your team
played with a lot of heart and intensity. You wanted it more than our team did and you beat us decisively. Congratulations.

Thanks
It was easy to see we were better prepared, senior wide receivers—three— to spread it around helped too. Your guys looked plenty smart, their cpoaches I think let them down. Saban is taking the blame, he should, he has to get them ready.
That D of yours has some terrific athletes , yet whenever Brian wanted or needed one he stood in the pocket, dialed his girfriend, looked around, then threw a pass.
See how long he stood in the bleeding endzone when you guys had us back onto the 1/2 yard line? It was nuts.

As a Gators Fan, I'd Love It.
Unfortunately, the rigors of an SEC schedule as well as forced non-conference games against the likes of Florida State (every year) and Miami (every 5th year) make it difficult. I wish we would take it upon ourselves to play the best of the non-BCS on a neutral field or in a home-and-home, but it is difficult to work out. Good luck to your Utes and congrats on a great season.

Why isn't Utah in the Pac 10???
Add in Boise State, split the conference into North and South divisions, and have those bitches play a conference championship. Anyway, congrats Utah and thanks for the cool post. Y’all kicked our ass.

ditto.
Put the Utes and BSU into the mix, then see how phenomenal USC looks.
BTW: That was the best executed gameplan I have ever seen. Hats off, Sir.

PAC 10
As a Utah fan, Id love to see Utah and BYU get into the Pac 10. I think more realistically, I’d like to see a 7th BCS conference. Take the Mountain west, add Boise State, Fresno State, maybe Tulsa or Houston and have a 12 team conference that has Utah, BYU, TCU. Boise State, Fresno State and Tulsa for football. Utah, BYU, TCU, and Boise State are perenially top 25 and Fresno State and Tulsa are solid programs as well. I think an undefeated team from this conference with a conference champ game would warrant an auto bid to BCS game, and possibly BCS NC game.

The Pac-10...
…has it right. They play every team in the conference and play nine conference games. They have one of the truest conference champions out there. I’d hate to see them foul that up.

is that sarcasm....
When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

Nope.
I think conference championship games are the biggest scams and wastes of time ever. I have a lengthy article on it about 75% written that will be posted in the next week or so.

oh
I was just wondering. I happen to agree with you.

If the SEC didn’t have a championship game this year, the only undefeated team would have been the conference winner, right? Then said team would be “rolling” into a bowl game at 12-0! I think I can see an advantage to NOT having one this year for some teams……..

That's not why I'm against them though
It’s that they just don’t make any sense on a multitude of levels. My argument doesn’t really have anything to do with Alabama’s fortunes, it has to do with what makes the most sense across the board and I hate to have to ask y’all to wait, but I don’t want to spoil that piece by breaking it all down here. It’ll be here this week, I promise.

Agree
I don’t like championship games right now since some conferences don’t play them. To me it also gives teams a “do over” in a sense. Plus winning the conference should be more about the entire season and not just one game. Furthermore when a team earns it’s place to the championship game “early” as did both Bama and UF then they spend time in practice focusing on the championship game instead of the next game.
And, many of the tickets for the championship game are gone to sponsors etc. In essence you have 2 bowl games which can be expensive for the average fan to attend. Ticket prices for the SEC this year were just plain wrong.
The game is all about the money and thus will never be changed.

"do-overs"
i know it hasn’t happened in the SEC yet (big 12 has, see 2001 and 2003) but yeah, when a team goes 5-3 in conference, wins their division, and plays an 8-0 team and wins…. thats a little unfair and is contrary to the idea of “the regular season IS the playoff”…

Hey, if the regular season is a playoff . . .
. . . then the team without any losses should get the title, right? ;)

Noooooo!
I wasn’t implying that you were advocating the end of CG’s b/c of OUR one season! I give you more credit than that! Just a fun thought for a day like today….a little “what if” to lift the spirits.
I don’t think anyone should have to play them if EVERYONE doesn’t have to play them. It just isn’t fair most of the time. I look forward to your article……..

a true round robin is the best way to settle it
trouble is, we cant downsize the SEC down to 9 or 10 teams. so we’re stuck w/ a CCG.

The only thing
I hated about the old way was that if there was a tie with no true tie-breaker, then the conf. representative to the Sugar Bowl was whichever team had the longest without that honor. Other than that, I’m 100% with you on this one.

thanks for the post
i agree that something should be done about the current BCS arrangement. the big east, big ten, and ACC really just cant make the case that they’re in anyway superior to the MWC. and to exclude the MWC when all rational observers agree it’s as good or better than HALF the BCS conferences, it just doesn’t make sense. particularly when you consider the old method for determining the champion was; rational observers having a vote.
for the time being the best answer is for mid majors to aggressively pursue better OOC schedules (utah and fresno state’s 2008 OOC schedules are perfect examples of what i’m talking about)
but in the long run, i cant believe i’m about to type this but the ass whoopin we just took has me convinced, we need something close to a playoff. perhaps a “plus 3” (use seeding system to put 8 particpants into the current BCS bowls, take the 4 winners, re-seed, and play a semi final then final, each two weeks apart, screw academics….) or a plus 1 using the same model, but having 4 teams in the running and selecting just the 2 winners…. heres the part that right now seems to make sense but later, might seem retarded, howbout the plus 1 or 3 be determined, at the end of the year, by voters. that way rare occasions like this season (and arguable the last 2 prior) will have 8 teams eligible, normal years like 03,04,05 will send just 4 into the fray…
anyway, back to utah, hats off to em. they got my espn.com fan nation vote for #1. they beat oregon state, us in the sugar bowl, TCU and BYU, and they had the nutts to schedule a game @ michigan, so i wont hold the fact that michigan sucked against em…. good job utes. keep it up.

As others have said...
…I thank you for your post. I hope that ya’ll get the respect you deserve from the poll voters. Your team played great and congratulations are in order. I would love to play at least one quality OOC game every year with a team NOT in the Southeastern part of the country. With a 12th game added to the schedule, that would be a worthy goal, in spite of losing some “home” money. Unfortunately, in life, it’s almost always about the money.
