Post game thoughts

man...i am so distraught after yesterday that i just need an outlet.  i just need to vent and get some thoughts out.  like Todd mentioned on the front page, this was definitely a what if game.  but watching the SECCG and last night's BCS game, it makes me think about what we need to fix for next year.  i'm sure it's obvious to everyone here, but i just need to put it out there.

starting with the offense, to simply put it, we need better pass protection and a more balanced, explosive offensive.  not just for situations in which we have to come from behind, but also for situations where we should be putting teams away early.  it's great when we have physical, time consuming drives that result in TD's.  but when they don't result in a TD or we only get a field goal, it kills us when we have to come from behind.  a lot of our games this season should have been blowouts or walks in the park if we just had more big, explosive plays that resulted in quick TD's.  obviously if we had better pass protection (and i'm not just talking about last night.  the pass protection has been sketchy all year even with the starting O-line), JPW would have more time to throw and would be less prone to mistakes.  but at the same time, if we had a QB that was better overall, less prone to mistakes and able to throw the long ball with more accuracy, the opposing teams' defenses wouldn't be able to take as much risks blitzing.  i guess they kind of go hand in hand.

as for the defense, to simply put it, we need a better pass rush.  our run defense is great obviously. but Florida and Utah just killed us through the air.  our lack of sacks and lack of pressure on the QB is obviously a big part of it.  but we obviously need more depth or ability at CB (marquis johnson comes to mind.  i watched this guy get burned deep multiple times against both Florida and Utah).  but in the end, better pass rush improves secondary play.

as heartbreaking as last night was, a 12-2 record, the SEC West title, a BCS bowl bid and being in contention for the MNC all year is still far beyond what was expected for this year.  i can't wait to see how much better we get when our overall ability, skill and depth improve.  it already started last year with a #1 recruiting class, and there's more coming this year and beyond.  ROLL TIDE!

I agree

about wanting a more explosive offense. I think at least once a game I’ve caught myself asking, “Can we ever hit a deep ball?” It seems like it’s an incomplete pass every time we throw deep.

I don’t think we need to become Texas Tech, but Good Lord, please let us have a quarterback who can hit some throws now and then so we’re not so dependent on pitching shutouts. It’s like watching one of those baseball teams that has good pitching and a bunch of singles hitters. As soon as they get behind by three or four runs, you feel like it’s over.

You watch USC and Oklahoma and Florida and it really makes you think we’re missing something. Those teams run the ball well and they hit the deep pass. Teams don’t fear our offense. We’re Alabama…we deserve an NFL caliber quarterback who can pick a defense apart. The threat of that will help with the pass rush because teams (like Utah, for example) won’t load the box and bring so much heat if you have a quarterback who can hit a high percentage of one-on-one passes.

THe QB is coming

When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

To piggy-back on your thoughts,

why do we never utilize Julio deep? It’s always McCoy or Stover on those routes. Of course, it doesn’t matter who the receiver is if he’s always overthrown. Still, seems like we’d put Julio deep at least once.

Because Wilson can't throw it deep

doesn’t matter if we had 1988 Jerry Rice, Wilson wouldn’t find him deep…

This is the best

comment I have ever read on this site. But didn’t Rice score 27 TD’s in 1987?

You're right.

And that’s why I added that it wouldn’t matter who was deep if we couldn’t get him the ball. My question is why Julio is never on those deep routes? In the 3-4 times during games we actually go deep it’s never to Julio, our best receiver. That puzzles me.

seriously

i don’t understand why we don’t utilize Julio more like the AZ Cardinals utilize Fitzgerald. Warner just throws it deep and up in the air for Fitz to go get it. Julio can outmuscle and outjump most DB’s. it’s true JPW can’t really throw a deep ball, but i think in the case of Julio, you just throw it up there and let him do the work.

Wilson

had a slow release and he was never very accurate. He could hit a deep ball if the receiver were completely wide open (like the deep ball he threw against Arkansas in 2007 when the DB fell down) but he could never get it in a spot where the receiver could jump up and take it away from a DB.

The deep ball is an essential throw. Even if you don’t throw it, you need the threat to open up other routes and keep the safeties honest.

Putting on my rose-colored glasses

IF Florida can take care of Oklahoma, then we will be a 12-2 team that was only defeated by the National Champions and the only undefeated team. Not too shabby of a year, once we get a little distance from the actual bowl game. So, go gators and ROLL TIDE always!

that’s a good way to look at it. i’m satisfied with that.
