National embarassment

I'm a long-time Bama fan, and remain one. Despite a better than expected season, the Sugar Bowl loss is an embarassment to the school and to all Bama fans. Poor coaching, lousy quarterbacking (why didn't they pull Wilson?), poor O-line (I know, Smith didn't play, others moved to new positions), no pressure on opposing Q-back, poor pass coverage, poor coaching, poor kicking game, ho-hum running game, poor coaching. Where has this team been the last month? Barry Switzer was right...Utah wanted to be at the Sugar Bowl, UA wanted to be at the BCS championship game.

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the readers of this site. They are in no way indicicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Pull Wilson??

I know he missed some passes deep but come on. He was pressured all night and was sacked 8 times…..he had no running game and only one reciever who has the ability to get open….i know everyone is pissed but JP did a great job for us all season and you hang him out to dry after just one game.

When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

Yep.

Wilson can’t be blamed at all for last night. Like Bammer said, he missed a few deep passes sure, but it was like watching the ‘05 line the way the Utes were shredding through. Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy couldn’t have done anything with that protection.

by Nico2.0 on Jan 3, 2009 9:15 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think Bradford and McCoy might have done something with that protection...

but they are a whole different level of quarterback, and in a whole different pass offense philosophy. That said, yeah, I can’t blame Wilson.

by formerlyanonymous on Jan 3, 2009 9:29 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i disagree.

wilson had about a half second after the ball was snapped before somebody was 2 yards from him. Nobody, no matter how good of a quarterback they are could have done something with that.

It is not

an embrassment to lose to Utah. I think we played our worst game which sometimes does happen in a bowl game since you have so much time off etc. We learned some lessons last year from some bad losses like ULM & MSU and the lessons we learned helped us win 12 straight. Hopefully besides lossing we will learn something to help us next year when hopefully we are back in BCS Bowl.

By the way, JPW was not the reason we lost and GM would not have done any better. Star Jackson might have been more mobile but you can’t take off the redshirt on him when we are down 21 pts. in bowl game. We just are not very deep on the line RIGHT NOW- next year our O line will be deeper.

And, we did lose a game, but it was not a title game. We will finish #6 or #7 and that is the best we have done in a long, long time.

National Embarrassment?

Thanks for riding the bandwagon train! I am sure we will see you again next time Bama wins. Utah is a dang good team. Everything 5026 and Nico said I echo. Wilson is not a game changer, but don’t get mad now that we needed that and blame him. The kid can only live up to his talents and abilities. We will be fine, heck, we are 5 games better this year than a lot of people thought. Watch out for us next year. I am excited.

That's the deal

It is simply amazing how much talent you guys will get back, and how much is invested emotionally into that program.

No way they aren’t going to conitnue to gain ground.

I am more embarrassed...

…by your comments, makvic, than I am by anything MY team did Friday night. We did not play well and we were playing a damn good team that you have to play well to beat. We won some games this year even though we did not play well because those teams were nowhere near the team that Utah is. I am not embarrassed by losing to a good team. I am upset that we came out flat and looked unprepared in the first quarter. We won quite a few games this year by scoring big first and the other teams had too much to overcome. The shoe was on the other foot this time. Our O-line was not itself and John Parker is not to blame for that. Nor should he have had to come out of such a big hole that our much touted D put us in. John Parker kept fighting to bring us back. He did not give up til the game was over and I appreciate those efforts. I am proud of this team AND our coaches even though the season finale was not what I had hoped it would be.

Why be embarrassed?

If Bama had not climbed off the mat after the first quarter onslaught I’d be more inclined to believe the Bama team had reason for embarrrassment.

But no! Bama clawed back, getting to within 4 points in the third. Utah then came through with a clutch drive and a crushing TD. When it had to make plays, Utah made plays.

I thought the Alabama team showed grit and fight throughout the game. If Utah were facing a lesser foe it could have been sixty-something to 17.

I respect all the responses to original comment, but I stand by them. I will, however, emphasize that I think the coaching was primarily the weakest link. And true, no QB can perform under the pressure JPW was under…so where was the protection? Why wasn’t the secondary looking for the ball instead of looking at the receivers catch the ball? Reminded me of the DuBose era play.
My hat’s off to the Utah team; no question they are a high caliber team. But had I paid $500 and gone to NOLA to see this game, I would be really pissed. Hey, college football is a big business. The players and the coaches have bought into this, and they benefit from it big time. They had a month to prepare for this game, but it was hard to tell how that time was spent. And yak all you want about the bandwagon, but I’ve suffered through a lot of crummy Bama football since 1993…and paid tuition, road trips to games, etc. ;-)

by makvic on Jan 4, 2009 5:27 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I bet Gator fans who paid their money to travel to see the Ole Miss game this year were saying the same thing in the days following that loss too! All of the same old stuff about it being a business, but now I bet they are glad they actually witnessed a loss! It is all a part of CFB and part of a GAME—-somebody just has to lose.

Maybe, in the future, we can look back at this game as a turning point for these under classmen. Maybe they will decide they never want to feel like that, ever again. Hopefully the coaches can continue to help them want to be champions, as they did for the majority of the games, moments this year!

If you had paid to see every game, I don’t think you could really complain about not getting your money’s worth this year. Even with the SB and SECCG included. You pay your money for your ticket knowing there is a chance your team will lose on any given Saturday, and this team came out on top 12 out of 14 times.

All that being said, I believe “bandwagon” may have been used b/c you claim to be a “long time Bama fan,” yet you say that after typing in the words National Embarassment. I cannot see myself ever using those words about this team. Maybe if they had gone out there and ……….no, I really cannot even envision a situation where I would use that phrase about this team. So, you see, you could have been watching games for 30 years with me and still would have been called “bandwagoneer” with terminology like that, I do believe.

I am proud of the Tide for an outstanding year

Let’s see, we had Smith GONE for the Sugar Bowl. An apt comparison would be no Tebow at the Florida game. We had Steele looking more towards his new gig at Clemson than at the Sugar Bowl and all the defense can feel it. The Marl Ingram had his Dad arrested about an hour and a half before kick-off. How many of you could even focus, let alone get tremendous intensity going with these “distractions”? The guys on the field and the coaches did one fantastic job this season and I am proud. FYI, after the Florida game, some fans wanted to bench Javy, who was absolutely awesome at the Sugar Bowl. So, the final conclusion is that Nick does a better job at selecting the starters than the peanut gallery does every time. ROLL TIDE!!

One more time...

When you’re going to play in the big league with the big boys, that’s got to include stepping up for all the games. I went to the Miss. St. game in ‘06…that was an embarrassment. I went to the La. Tech game in ’07…that was an embarassment. This game drops squarely in that category. It has nothing to do with caliber of the individuals on the team – I don’t think for a minute any of them wanted to lose this game. But with all the resources, all the hype, all the practices, all the planning, and all the expectations that went into the Tide collectivley for the SB, we on the fan side deserve better than that. Saban’s had 2 years to develop this program. I don’t think a win against a Mountain West team is too much to ask. When the expectations are run up the flagpole, and we stand there ready to salute, it better be the right flag…it wasn’t.

I don't think . . .

you fully understand the meaning of the word “embarrassment.” I would agree that losing to a poor Mississippi State or Louisiana-Monroe team is cause for experiencing some level of self-conscious distress. However, losing to an undefeated team in the Sugar Bowl, while playing without your team’s best center, is most definitely not reason for embarrassment.

Disappointment? Perhaps, depending on your level of maturity. But embarrassment? No way.

Sorry, I'm not *your* fan type

Please don’t include me in your “embarrasment to all bama fans”. I’m not embarressed by my team in the least. Quite the opposite. So please speak for yourself. Not me.

The only coaching call that....

I didn’t agree with was the call to kick a feild goal instead of going for a 4th and 2(I think it was) late in the game.

...Wild Elephant formation with Terrence Cody at QB.

Hey...

Lets realize that as a “true” fan (as everyone on here claims to be) you have a right to be upset or dissappointed about the play or coaching of your team, particularly in a bad loss…and the SB, like it or not was a bad loss. Not just b/c they lost, but in the manner they lost it…they quite frankly didn’t show up to play (can anyone truely say that was the best this team was capable of?). I am a huge fan, have been through all the good and bad times and ALWAYS will be, but I don’t think that equates to being a sunshine pumper at every turn. This season was AWESOME and I thoroughly enjoyed it and think a very bright future is ahead for Bama. However, the last game of the season gave me an uneasy feeling to the end to a great season. Frankly, I don’t mind a little teeth knashing when appropriate. Maybe some phrases in the original post were a little strong, but he is obviously a graduate and fan of the University and has the right to express some dissatisfaction with the play in the SB. Anyway, looking forward to next year and hope the team learned from this loss as I am sure CS will ensure. RTR!

Though...

I do strongly disagree with the pull JP comment, that would have been a poor decision. The better choice would have been to realize Wilson was not going to morph into Tom Brady in the last game of the season and stuck with our running game…we abandoned that waaaaaaaay too early.

by String30 on Jan 5, 2009 9:09 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

down 21...

you can’t really run all that much. Especially with the new clock rules. Now if the running game had worked just a little early on, its worth a shot. But we were never really able to get a push and get those 4-6 ypc that we thought we’d get. I actually thought the offensive gameplan was good. We had open recievers all day but JP just was off.

When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

by bammer on Jan 5, 2009 9:42 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't really agree there...

Bama has been running the ball down throats all season (that was there strong suit) with the same clock rules. After the running game started pounding the defense is when Wilson was able to become effective. Plus, if you look back over this season our running game got stronger and more potent as the game wore on and we grinded defenses down. In the SB, Coffee and Ingram started breaking some really nice runs in the second half, but for whatever reason we never stuck with it. Also, a sustained running game would have taken the ball out of Utah’s offensive hands and given our D a breather (those guys were exhausted). Anyway, that just how I saw it and admitedly I have never been a coach.

by String30 on Jan 5, 2009 2:04 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes

You are totally correct. But when you spot a team 21 points, running the ball is not a priority/ option. Take UGA for example. We jumped on them early. Once down by more than 3 scores Noshow was not a factor after that. Once we cut the lead to 4, then you can bring back the running game but down 21, running the ball would have been foolish.

Also, we didn’t run becuase we couldnt. The left side of the line was demolished and the right side wasn’t much better. Its hard to lean on something that isn’t there. Ya know?

When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

National? I think not.....

La Tech, now that was a national embarrassment. We lost to an undefeated Utah team that had something to prove, and they did. We had one distraction after another, the media and fans talking about not if we would win, but by how much. With remarks like I hope we can get our subs in at the end of the game. How would you expect any other team to play? We got our butts kicked, the end!
Am I embarrassed, NO. Emabarrassing is being a barner and seeing what you’re program has become from the top down. Embarrassing is being a UcheaT fan and losing to Wyoming, and having had at least enough since to get rid of fat phil.
Come now, many of you may not remember losing to Louisville 34-7 in a bowl game, but I do. Bowl games are just the end of the year unless you are in the MNC game. This will just be a memory come next spring, and when the footballs start flying and the pads start smacking, we will all say “Sugar Bowl, that was last year”.

Well, are you gonna pull them pistols, or whistle dixie?
