Recruiting for 09

Hey guys, Guess I'm feeling pretty good about our season. And already lookin forward to the 09 season. My favorites include Scout and Rivals and I've been checking them often.

We've been pretty high in both being in the top five in recruiting class. But today , we've dropped to #10 with Scout but still #5 at Rivals. Some of the other teams in the Top 10 have just signed some great prospects and leapfrogged us.

I know we had a great recruiting class in 08 and if over today wud have a good class this year and signing day isn't here yet. I just wonder how  our loss in the Sugar Bowl has affected our recruiting ,if any, and what are our chances of getting Randle since he visited.

How do ya'll feel about our recruiting chances as of this week as opposed to last week.

recruits have to look at the team as whole that they will join

I was astounded just now when the commentators said that OSU had 28 seniors. 28??? Wow—we are losing 9 + Andre. I knew we had a low number of players leaving, but that REALLY puts it in perspecive. A recruit will see that 90% of our 12-2 team is returning and that we are a tough eam with continuity—not to mention a tremendous coach and state of the art physical plant. Let’s not forget, too, a wonderfully loyal fan base. I can’t stop with the “ands,” but here is the last one, I promise—and great weather.

Didn't read the preceding post of 09

and being a paint contractor I have to agree we’ve had great weather for January.
Some of my questions were answwered in the previous post. Thanks.

Utah won't affect you and here is why

Because you weren’t expected to be there this year and everyone knows it. This year was supposed to be the building year for your team and next year was supposed to be strong.

And yeah, I believe that Alabama is one of the lowest senior classes in D1 with your 9 but there are some schools that are ridiculously high.

In a way this game

actually could help us recruit another great WR to match with Julio (clearly we are a one WR team at present) and any great DB in the country has to think he could come in and play next year. Hmmmm….seems like there are 2 guys like that looking at Bama right now.

by 5026 on Jan 5, 2009 9:22 PM CST reply actions

Esp. DB's....

It was painfully apparent ,watching the Utah and SECCG, that one corner (ahem, Marquise) is not up to the task…he plays out of position, has little ball awareness, is not very physical, is not a particularly good tackler. He’s stop gap. I hate to pile on the kid (I remember Langham getting abused by Miami in the first Sugar Bowl), but you’ve got to play your best 11…If he was the best we had for the other spot opposite Kareem, then we must pray for some recruiting help and/or early contribution (Kirkpatrick staying committed and Alonzo Lawrence stepping in would be nice). Not that it’s a knack on any one in particular but our secondary just wasn’t equipped this year to handle supremely talented, deep offenses on the outside.

"penis fish"…google that, and the candiru is the first thing that pops up

by Stuck in the Plains on Jan 6, 2009 7:24 AM CST up reply actions

Kirkpatrick isn't committed yet

although all signs point to him coming. Marquis isn’t anything better than a back up, IMO, and Kareem played very poorly as well…

by Stuck in the Plains on Jan 6, 2009 10:42 AM CST up reply actions

pass rush, pass rush, pass rush

yes Marquis gets burned deep constantly, but the opposing QB’s are getting way too much time to throw. we need a better pass rush to defend these spread offenses. the secondary can hold their own as long we get more sacks and more QB pressures. everyone knows they can’t run on us, so once our pass D becomes better we’ll be unstoppable. of course getting Dre (and hopefully stealing Janzen) and having guys like Barron and Lawrence step up next year will help too.

by CSon on Jan 6, 2009 2:24 PM CST up reply actions

To

be fair, a QB that can make more than one read downfield would help our WR issue… we don’t exactly know if we have another guy at that position yet IMO….

The only reason he threw deep to Stover..

Is because Nikita’s ‘9’ looks like Julio’s ‘8’ from that far away.

Bad joke, I know.

by yellowhammer on Jan 6, 2009 10:47 AM CST up reply actions

I

don’t think JPW read the defense on that play, I think that was a called deep post route and JPW just threw it to a predetermined location.

OMG!!

I can’t wait to see a QB at bama actually go through his progression. As much as i have supported JP, this has bugged me from the beginning. He did last year with DJ and again this year with Julio. Cause im thinking most teams double teams Julio which has to leave SOMEONE open. Our recievers can’t be THAT bad.

Just some more RR news of note...

I don’t know if Auburn was as much in the mix as the Barners seem to think (maybe they were), but he was supposed to have an official visit to Auburn this weekend and rescheduled (aka cancelled) his trip at the last minute. Some other fairly big names were supposed to come with him and “rescheduled” as well. Hopefully this just means one more team out of the mix for his capabilities.

well here is how i see it.

I have heard talks that Saban will over sign again this year. Though i love the enthusiasm, id hate to see become a regular thing. If Saban doesn’t over sign and we only get 22-24 recruits, i don’t see us ending up in the top 5. Thats not to mean we don’t have an incredible class, it just means we have fewer players. As long as we get the right players for our syestem i don’t really care about the class rankings. I just care about the players we get preforming on the field.

When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

by bammer on Jan 7, 2009 9:08 AM CST up reply actions

They

only count the top 20 players when the do the team rankings on Rivals at least. This may be the last year the he oversigns because eventually it will become reloading with 20-25 signed vs 28 (which is kinda what i think we will sign this year. )

I know Saban doesn't run some strange offense or defense

but isn’t it more important to get the right kind of players rather then the top players….the pats have made a living out of picking the right guys in the draft and not always the top 5.

Also

remember some of our scholy’s will back count to last year, also another reason we can sign more than 25. On the oversigning issue, isn’t there the ‘1 year scholarship’ thing now? They renew it each year instead of garaunteeing you a full 4-5 years.

The 2.0 usually isn't the problem

The ACT or SAT score is almost always the issue. Back in the 90s, you had to make a 14 or 15 to get in with an athletic scholarship and people still couldn’t get in. They raised it 18 or something early in the 2000s and NAACP came out claiming that it was racism and that colleges were trying to keep black athletes from going to college.

Atchison switched his commitment to Alabama from Auburn after the resignation of Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. Atchison made the change after having a lengthy conversation with Alabama coach Nick Saban.

Pat Patterson

I don’t think we have much shot at Randle but…..newspapers out of Biloxi are stating Pat Patterson is an Alabama lean. He looked great in the HS all-star game bringing in the best catch of the day. He doesn’t have great speed but runs good patterns and will catch anything thrown in his area code.

5-Star

What a difference 3 days make, as Pat Patterson was a 3 star recruit and now he has jumped to 5 stars. Heard he is leaning toward the Tide. Hope we can land him. I actually like him better than Randle. He seems tougher. I love WR who aren’t afraid to go over the middle and run good routes. Speed is important, but not as important as good ball skills.
