Big 12 and the BCS
well...i just finished watching the Fiesta Bowl off my Tivo. i have to say that was a great game to watch. i have to feel for tOSU fans though. what a heartbreaking loss. it eases my pain just a bit. not because i enjoy seeing other people suffer, but because i feel whatever pain we may feel as Bama fans is three times worse for tOSU fans. and it'll be 5 times worse for Spooner fans after they lose their 5th BCS bowl in a row Thursday.
but we've now seen 3 of the top 4 teams from the Big 12 South play and i have to say that it is confirmation once again that the Big 12 is more about having no defense rather than having explosive offenses. Oklahoma State gives up 42 points to Oregon and Texas Tech gives up 47 points to Ole Miss. and yes Texas only gave up 21 points to tOSU tonight, but that was more of OSU not having an explosive offense. OSU didn't score any TD's against SUC or Penn St this year. combine that with the fact that Texas (who averages 44 pts/game) only scored 24 on OSU's defense (we all know about OSU's "vaunted" defense) and the Big 12 is OVERRATED!
and SUC can cry all they want about deserving a title because the Pac-10 went 5-0 in bowl games, but we all know that doesn't prove anything. for one, the Big East went 5-0 in '06-'07. does that mean they were the best conference? NO. two, the 5-0 doesn't justify a conference that includes Washington and Washington State along with only having 5 of their teams make bowls. not to mention, they were something like 1-4 against the Mountain West. and third, all the Pac 10 bowl games excluding SUC's were tightly contested, being decided by 11 pts or less.
S-E-C!

Everything points
to Florida having a big win over Okie, but I sure hate the Gators. I’d wish for both teams to look bad and Utah win the AP poll. But I just don’t see Okie stopping Superman.

just remember
We were hearing all the same things about the Utah game…
When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

well
both Bama and Florida are well-coached and disciplined in all 3 phases of the game. the difference is that Florida has the speed, talent and depth to go along with it. plus they have a better QB. it makes up for any mistakes or shortcomings (except against Ole Miss of course). thus, losing 2 starting lineman on offense and lacking speed/skill on defense killed us.
Florida with an explosive offense of their own matched up against OU who may have the speed and talent to match, but has a questionable defense, shaky special teams and inferior coaching, along with 4 straight BCS losses (2 to inferior teams), and i just see 2004 Orange Bowl all over again. until i’m proven wrong, i’m going with my prediction of a blowout by Florida.

but...
Florida is playing for something a little different than Alabama. You get more excited about a National Championship than a Sugar Bowl trophy.

i agree
from another thread:
i have to think that if both teams went into the Sugar Bowl undefeated, it would have been a completely different ball game. this was Utah’s nat’l championship game. Bama had nothing to gain. if we won, it was expected. if we lose, it was a debacle.
plus, playing with 3 backup linemen didn’t help. we just don’t have the depth or talent right now to overcome serious injuries. especially injuries to the unit that was our STRENGTH all year.

Was Penn State unmotivated to play in the Rose Bowl?
What about Ohio State? Was Texas Tech unmotivated to play Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl? Every team that lost a bowl game could give the unmotivated excuse, but the only ones that seem to do it are the ones that got beat by non-BCS teams.
Everyone hates a pink-shirt-wearing communist.

totally agree...
the “unmotivated” excuss is lame….

I doubt...
…it would have mattered how motivated the players were, considering how awful our O-Line was after we lost Andre Smith and Mike Johnson. It was like we went from best O-Line in the nation to worst in the SEC after that.
I don’t know if ‘unmotivated’ is the right word, but something other than just Utah’s fine offensive talent was going on with our defense. Maybe the Kevin Steele crap was bothering too many players, maybe — in the words of Dont’a Hightower — they underestimated the Utes. But it’s just weird how Utah was unstoppable in the 1st quarter and…unmotivated…for much of the rest of the game.
It doesn’t really matter now, and I’m not claiming that we would have won the game had Steele, Smith, and Johnson not been issues. Utah is a very good football team and may have won anyway. All I’m saying is that the way you beat a team with a very good offense is to keep that offense off the field. Without our two All-Americans anchoring the left side of the line that they had for most of the year, we couldn’t do that. Since Utah’s strength (passing game) got to face our weakness (pass D) so much, it’s no wonder the game turned out like it did.

"The Best Damn Band in the Land"= no class
I was watching the game as a neutral observer, trying to lean toward Texas but not really caring. Until halftime. That’s when the osu band was introduced to us all as “The Best Damn Band in the Land”, just as Alabama’s band is “The Million Dollar Band”.
I really wanted to see Texas win after that. Leave it to slob osu (according to one of RBR’s members who went to the osu-um game) to be simple, un-original, and classless when it comes to choosing a nickname for their band.
Just a small thing, I know, but it just rubbed me the wrong way.

annoying
man those bands were annoying last night. constant drumming and racket throughout the entire game. almost wanted to watch it on mute cause they wouldn’t shut up. playing a tune or melody after a 1st down is one thing, but just constantly making noise with drums and cowbells throughout the game (from both sides) was just irritating.

i was at the game
and it was a good time. i sat in a section full of osu fans and we talked trashed about michigan. it was a grand time. til they choked the game away.
overall though, this game was confirmation that the big 12 is absolute crap. some people might need to see florida beat the pants off of OU before they’ll believe it, that’s fine. anyone who will not acknowledge that the big 12 is all hype and no defense after that game, and the inevitable ass whooping OU will take, is a homer for the big 12, no if’s and’s or but’s.
