Alabama and Bowl Games

After last Friday's Sugar Bowl, our Bowl record is now 31-22-3.  Frankly put, our record in Bowl games is an area in our tradition and history that is sadly lacking.  Yes, we hold the records for most Bowl games played(56) and most Bowl games won(31), but USC is now only 1 game behind us in wins thanks to their win in the Rose Bowl.  Texas is still well behind us in Bowl games played at 48.  This link is through 2006, so I added the next 2 years to it.

I've been thinking about this and wondering why we perform so poorly in Bowl games.  Even the greatest coach to ever coach the game was only 12-10-2 in Bowl games at Alabama.  Coach Bryant had a run from 1967 to 1974 where we lost(7) every Bowl game except 1970 when we tied with Oklahoma 24-24.  Now THAT is embarrassing.

Coach Saban is 1-1 in Bowl games at BAMA.  I hope he can turn the Tide more toward winning in the post season than what we have done in the past.  If anyone can, I believe he is the man.

Proud of my team, always wear my gear, and my greeting is ROLL TIDE!!!

That does not sound bad to me

Assuming all your numbers are correct, Alabama has a Bowl winning percentage of .580. If you consider that Bowl games are always against a team with at least a .500 record and once upon a time were only against conference champions, that is a record to be proud of. Alabama has played in the most prestigious Bowl games and come out with a winning record.

Be proud.

Most teams.....

would love to have half the record we do, so for our history, I’m proud. If my memory serves me right, if we could have beaten Texas (4 or 5 loses and a tie) and Notre Dame ( 2 loses) Coach Bryants and Bama’s bowl record would have improved greatly. Sometimes it just seems that a team just has your number and it always seemed that both of those teams did.
So maybe, if Bama could end up playing one of those teams or both and beating them, then we can correct some of the loses of the past.

Well, are you gonna pull them pistols, or whistle dixie?

i'm with vicki

it pisses me off to no end that USC is right on our heels in all time bowl victories, yet we have way more total bowl games played than them.

the only remedy is to win our next 13 games and then beat the piss out of usc in next years title game. sound good to ya’ll?

sounds like a good plan to me!!

That's the paradox of success. The moment you stop to enjoy it, you are in trouble. You have to keep moving forward. It's not what you have done that's important. It's where you are going.

When the two...

…best teams in the country meet, as was often the case with Alabama, somebody has to lose.

When the U. of Southern California gets to play the Big 10 ‘champ’ in southern California (or face a worse team), we know who that somebody is.

Their matchups with OU and Texas this decade are the only instances I know of that run counter to that, and USC is 1-1 in those games.

There's one other example this decade.

USC played in the 2001 Las Vegas Bowl and lost 10-6. I’ll let you all google the opponent, but considering the fact that I posted it and watched the game, you probably could figure it out. :)

I was...

…kinda including the 2001 Utah team in the ‘worse than the Big 10 champ’ category. Sorry.

I would too, they weren't great.

But the difference is that USC LOST this game. So while they consistently beat up the BIG 10 representatives they face in the Rose Bowl, when they have to play a Big 12 school or Utah, their record isn’t nearly as impressive.

As much as I'd love to play and defeat USC....

we’ve done that before. I want Texas! We have some serious work to do on THAT record.

To

be fair though Vicki bowl games didn’t officially count in the NCAA records until the late 70’s I think. They used to vote on who the NC was before bowl games were even played. How can you get up to play a game that didn’t even count in the record books? And the NC was already decided? Just saying some perspective is in order when talking about overall records, and that goes for just about anything.

I always find that amusing when you look at the NC records prior to that time and it lists the bowl game for that year with the NC. Often the NC lost their bowl game! Such a foreign concept in this time.

I disagree...

You play for PRIDE, damn it. Just decline to play if your attitude is that you’re not even going to get up for the game. It’s a cop out any way you look at it. The team SHOULD have gotten up to play in the Sugar Bowl last Friday night because it was a BCS Bowl and we had not been there in a long, long time. Andre completely screwed us and it screwed with the team as well. The line chemistry was completely gone. Our strength became our weakness and we could not overcome it. Here’s a good article on how important that chemistry is. I will NEVER forget Smith’s selfishness.
