2010 Recruiting: Four Star WR DeAndrew White Commits
DeAndrew White - WR -

HT: 6'0" - WT: 170 - 40: 4.4 - Galena Park, TX
According to ESPN, four star wide receiver prospect DeAndrew White has committed to Alabama. According to his ESPN profile:
White combines excellent overall foot speed with good athleticism and adequate size. He possesses a lean frame and is a sleak athlete. He is a very crisp, disciplined wide receiver that is very consistent in his methods as a route-runner. Makes sharp cuts, bursts off the ball and can stick his foot in the ground and plant with burst and suddenness to create separation. Displays very good hands and catches away from his frame or above his head. Possesses the wingspan to adjust and elevate to pluck balls on slants and underneath crossing routes.
White held offers from just about everyone, including Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Houston, Kansas, LSU, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech. This is a pretty big grab for us, so welcome aboard. YouTube highlights after the jump.

6'10" ?!?!
Good Lord, man…
He’s gonna be a foot taller than most corners. Then with the wingspan that accompanies someone of that stature, most d-backs are going to be giving up close to two feet when the ball is caught at its highest point.

Yeah
after watching the highlight video I would say this kid isn’t 6’10.

He is 6'0. Here
is a statement from rivals.com about him: “The 6-foot, 180-pound sprinter is the reigning Class 5A 200 Meter champion and ranked #3 in the nation in the long jump during the U.S.A. Track and Field Championships that were held in North Carolina this summer.”

It's cool
I figured it was a typo. I personally have never seen a wide reciever who was 6’10 but it would be cool to get one that tall. lol

Didn't Memphis...
… have a 6’9 receiver against Ole Miss?
Of course he had the quickness of Manute Bol, but still.

Yeah... Louisville has a guy...
that’s 6’8", but dude’s got bricks for hands, and couldn’t outrun a sloth. Last year, they liked to throw him goal-line-esque corner fade routs, only they’d be at midfield, and he’d catch 2 out of every 5 they threw him. It was their version of the QB sneak on short yardage situations. But enough about him, how about this 6’10" guy…

is the quickness of Manute Bol even a quantifiable number?

the wingspan
should also be 6’10. middle fingertip to middle fingertip with outstretched arms should equal your height. unless you are a little bit of a freak of nature (my daughters) or ALOT of a freak of nature (michael phelps).

This
is great news. I heard a few places that he would probably be going to Texas so this is a big steal.

Texas didn't offer him a scholarship as far as I can tell.
Does anyone know why?
by monjardin on Oct 12, 2009 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
They do already have 2 WR commits for 2010. Maybe they just didn’t have room?

Basically...
… the “problem” for Texas is that the state turns out way more great players than they can sign.

This is from ESPN
Quote:
"The 5-foot-11, 170-pound receiver holds over 20 Class of 2010 offers, including Auburn, Oklahoma, LSU, Notre Dame, Arkansas, Baylor, Colorado, Florida, Houston, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
ESPN’s Billy Tucker commented on White’s decision, “We feel this is a excellent out-of-state pickup for Alabama; White is a great college prospect who may be overshadowed a bit in this very deep wide receiver class.”

Texas offer
According to Burnt Orange Nation, Texas did offer, but just too late to be taken into serious consideration.

Big pick-up here...
We’ve been on DeAndrew White’s radar screen for a long time now, and we’ve always been considered to be in pretty good shape for him. Getting a commitment from him is not a major shock, per se, but I don’t think anyone expected it this soon. I for one, and I think most others as well, were expecting him to wait until later in the process.
Either way, this is a big pick-up. He’s a great athlete, and he is definitely one of the top wide receiver prospects in the country. With Malone and Carswell already members of this class, this gives us three quality wide receiver prospects with Keenan Allen likely still ’Bama bound. If we can land those four, it will be yet another great WR class at ’Bama.
At any rate, you have to give our staff credit for recruiting Texas. Getting Square out of there a couple of years back was big, and this year we’ve racked up Chad Lindsey, Cade Foster, and now DeAndrew White. That’s four talented players who are really going to help us, coming from an area that is certainly not a traditional ’Bama recruiting stronghold.

I have to wonder
if this will affect how Keenan Allen views UA….I don’t think it should, but if he feels like there is yet another stud to contend with at his position, he might start to get a little uneasy

I don't think it would...
… my concern would probably be more with Corey Grant.

Exactly
Even if Allen commits and stays at wide receiver there is almost no chance that Allen and White will play the same position at wide receiver. Allen is your prototypical big bodied outside wide receiver. White definitely looks to be more of a slot guy like Hanks. Grant is probably also in that slot receiver type mold as well, but hopefully will be good enough to get off the line like Maze and play at different positions.
