The Third Saturday in October
Hey guys. I got my tickets to the UT-UA game a couple weeks ago and have been meaning to write a post about this. It is about a 5 hour drive down from Knoxville. What time should I plan on getting to Tuscaloosa in order to get a decent parking spot close to the stadium? Also I have never been to Tuscaloosa for a game before, is there any restaurant / bar / event that is a pre-game must, or something worth checking out? I guess any general comments, recommendations or suggestions you may have about gameday in T-town would be much appreciated. Thanks. Oh, and I look forward to watching yalls match up with S.Carolina considering that yall are our next two opponents. Should be a good one. I can't wait for Oct. 24! See ya in Bama land. Go Vols!

My tips:
Get there at least 3 hours early for a parking space within a mile of the stadium for this game. Go to the quad and pig out on the variety of food available there. You’ll be surrounded by friendly tailgaters and excellent food. While almost everyone on the quad will be Bama fans, you’ll find the atmosphere very friendly, with the occasional verbal jabs and boos.
Oh, and I recommend the blackened chicken sandwich on the quad.
There’s safety in numbers, and though there will be the occasional rude Bama fan, you’ll find most people on the quad willing to talk and trade jabs with you.

FWIW
I’ve been to Tuscaloosa twice, and had better interactions with Bama fans on The Quad than anywhere else I’ve been in the SEC. It’s very well done there.

If the game is at 3:30 EST
I’d say get their as EARLY as possible — like six or seven in the morning! Eating wise, Dreamland of course. And bar wise, check out The Houndstooth on The Strip. But you’ve gotta get their early too or else they won’t be able to squeeze you in!
I hope you enjoy your experience (excluding the game lol). Have a safe trip and let us know how it went.

The Strip and the quad.
Before and after.
After spending seven wondrous years in the state of Alabama, never in my life have I seen fans, who claim to be loyal to one team, spend more time AUbsessing over the other more so than they do their very own.

I'd say it depends on what you're planning to do.
If you’re planning on bringing stuff in (tent, food, etc.), I would highly suggest coming down on Friday to set up your tent. The Quad opens at 6:00 on Friday. You can then unload your stuff until 10:00am on Saturday morning. If you’re just coming to mill around and enjoy the atmosphere, it doesn’t really matter when you arrive. I usually park in the lot behind the University Medical Center off of University Boulevard. It’s $10, but it’s only about a 5-10 minute walk to the Quad.

Absolutely
if you are actually wanting to set up on the quad, better do it Friday evening. But if you just want to park somewhere near the stadium, and then walk around, hit the strip etc… then about 3-4 hours before gametime is what I would suggest.

Wilhagan's is fun
Near the Mellow Mushroom and RBC bank building downtown. Parking there looks “questionable”, but is fine. Plenty of other bars/food/wine there as well.
I think there is a Piano Bar at Brown’s Corner these days, also downtown across from RBC.
Mugshots has solid hamburgers. Wing’s is a good sports grille near a Hampton Inn if you are staying there. Chuck’s is good (downtown), but pricey.
There is a place on the strip that sells BBQ Nachos before the game. You’ll probably see a big tent and a lot of people.

Those BBQ nachos are the only MUST DO for me.
Otherwise I usually just hop from the tailgates to the Strip. The bars on the Strip are pretty much interchangeable when it comes to pregaming (IMO).

That’s Big Bad Wolf’s…and it’s a must. It’s on the patio of the Houndstooth.

Should read
For drinking…go across the street to Egan’s and ask for Chinese Dentist.
And I should add that that isn’t some sort of code word. That’s a user that posts here and tends bar there on Gamedays.

I think it can be both
Yeah I’ll be open at eight on Saturday. Which will be more rough then normal because my 30th b-day party is at Egans the night before. I love talking sports and besides a few assholes everyone there is mostly super chill and just looking to watch some football and have a good time. If you feel weird asking for Chinese Dentist you can ask for Bo. We have a bunch of goods beers but as a disclaimer we don’t sell Miller or Coors Light. We do have Bud and Mich Light, you’d be amazed how much that blows peoples minds, and also a bunch of swank micro and imported stuff. Pop in your first ones on me. I also make a bloody Mary that will bring a tear to a glass eye. We are directly across the street from the Hounds tooth where you can get the bbq nachos that have more then once saved my life.

I will second Wilhagans, Egans, and the blackened chicken/steak sandwiches on the quad…. I live a block from the Houndstooth (Where the BBQ is set up) and haven’t ever tried that… but that will change this Saturday.

Go to Harry's

dreamland dreamland dreamland dreamland dreamland
Seriously. If you love ribs, go to the original dreamland location (it’s a tar paper shack that really ought to be condemned) and you’ll leave happy.
If you like Q, but aren’t a huge rib fan, Archibald’s is really good.
Egan’s for drinks…not the biggest bar in town, but by far the best (quality, not quantity) crowd. Wilhagan’s is great as well. The Houndstooth is a tuscaloosa fixture, but ever since they rebuilt it, it’s lost some of the charm. Still not a bad place though.
Definitely spend some time on the quad. Most of the time, ‘Bama friends are super friendly if you don’t provoke them. I have seen many a quad tailgater sharing food and beverages with visiting fans, just to make them feel welcome. The quad has kind of a county fair type atmosphere on game day, minus the creepy carnies and deathtrap rides.
Gameday traffic can be tough. I’d get up at the crack of dawn to drive down and avoid it, if I were you.
Hope your first experience in T-Town is a good one! Roll Tide, and welcome to town!

you can park
over by the rec / soccer fields on campus drive (the exit after university blvd on 82)
I like downtown pub, egans and wilhagens as far as bars go, also if you aren’t in the mood for bbq, you can always check out Hooligans for some great burgers, hummus, gyros etc. Also I’d definitely recommend going to Big Daddy’s on Greensboro after a long night of drinking. It stays open to 3 i think, and it has chicken, burgers, and best of all, hooka.

Faves...
Dreamland opens at 10, so you gotta’ pound your ribs, white bread and beer pretty quickly to get overland by 11. The ambience is worth it.
Egan’s for drinks. Eclectic is the word of the day; nice folks, good drinks.
If you can get a spot by the rec field/law school (or baseball field), that’s money.

the post from RCR
was really helpful last weekend and while we didn’t get to visit everywhere we wanted, we were able to find everything and won’t feel lost next time in oxford.
it would be great if we (read ’y’all’) could come up with something like that for our visitors and post it on their blogs – forget that, for our FANS too because the hip spots change all the time (except egans which has been tragically hip since at least 1980).

I second that request...
I am coming to the game this weekend and it will be my first one since 1998 and I unfortunately have no clue about where to go anymore. I moved from Birmingham to Las Vegas in 1999 and it has taken me about that long to save up for the airfare and tix to the game.
And speaking of tix, I have 1 extra if anyone is interested. I had planned on taking my cousin with us, but he is in the Navy and unfortunately was deployed to somewhere in the middle east the last of September. The tix are section HH, Row 55 and the seat is 27 (I have 27-30). They are 45 yard line, lower level and the seats are aisle seats. I would love to be able to get someone from on here to take it because then I know that I’d have a good fan sitting next to us. And I worry about getting in trouble trying to sell it at BDS. Contact me at: angelabvegas@aol.com if anyone is interested or leave a response to my comment.
BTW, I am planning on leaving my parents’ home in Cullman about 5:30-6:00 am, so hopefully this will put us in T-Town about 8 ’ish. Will that put us there in time to get good parking? And about what time should I be at BDS to see the players arrive?

it's my birthday on thursday
so let me know if anyone contacts you and wants to buy me the ticket – lol. the walk of champions happens two hours before kick-off but if you want to actually SEE the players, you’re going to have to get there earlier than that and wait…which cuts down on your time drinking with chinese dentist (his birthday too!) at egans. would love to meet up with you and hang for a bit!!

Happy Birthday early!
I would love to meet up with you as well. Unfortunately I will not be drinking (much)because my Mom is coming with us and I will be the one driving. This will be my hubby’s first Alabama game (he is a damn yankee originally from Chicago), so I want to take him and show him everything! He has taken me to Wrigley Field several times and we have actually been down on the field and in the dugout during batting practice before a game, so I really have to show him a lot to top that. But I know that BDS, our fans and the excitement will top it!

you should be able
to get good parking at 8 somewhere close. Thats one of the reasons I open so early is so I can get a park. I’m not sure when the players get there. I’m always knee deep in booze hounds.

as a recent alum...
I have to agree with most of the posts on here. Some of my good friends from college own a bar on the strip called The Bear Trap and it’s a fun new place. They have a patio upstairs with a bar and have great food also. As for the BBQ NACHOS…they sell them in the game!! Yes, they are a little expensive but they have Dreamland BBQ sauce and are well worth it. My boyfriend wanted one during each quarter when we were there for the FIU game!

Bear Trap...
is a great place to go before the game. It is right by the stadium behind Phil’s and is clean, with tons of TVs and beer on tap. Definitely wish we had something like that when I was in college 5 years ago.
