Sorry guys...
… I’ve been out most of the night. I’m watching, and a few thoughts:
- Defense playing great
- Marquis Johnson having a great night
- HUGE sign of relief on Ingram’s knee injury being nothing major
*The lack of a passing game continues to kill us. Our entirely passing game consists solely and completely of dump-off passes to the backs.
- McElroy is looking really bad. He’s got two picks, and honestly should have two or three more.
- That last-minute drive by South Carolina was huge. I hate that we had to squib it, but it’s almost a forced decision with how bad our kick coverage team is.
- Good to see Upchurch back looking healthy
- Julio Jones… zero catches in the first half… why in the world can we not get the football to him?

Play calling
… Looks like McElwain has very little confidence in his QB right now.
Dr. BamaFrazier is IN!
I agree...
… and I think that is a very justified position right now. Your quarterback has to show you he can do something positive, and McElroy has not even shown us tonight that he can avoid outright disasters when we drop him back to pass.

In his defense, I haven't seen many open receivers or seen him be able to sit back with time to throw often.

-Hank Hill
Not necessarily disagreeing...
… but if you are a quarterback who needs (1) all day to throw and / or (2) wide open receivers to even put up middling production, you’re just playing like shit.
I’m not saying McElroy has gotten a lot of help, mind you, but even so he has really played poorly.

It's the third-most rushing yards in Alabama history
Alexander had 291, as mentioned, and Humphrey had 284.
i seriously dont understand how he isnt even in the votes to be mentioned.
granted, i would rather win the NC but if we don’t i would like to see him win the heisman
Ingram doesn’t need to play anymore tonight. Chances of injury are higher when you’re that tired and we CAN NOT loose this man.
and keep in mind,
his exhaustion just bought the defense a good rest. you simply cannot praise his effort enough

It's also...
The most yards per carry by any Alabama RB but Alexander, minimum 20 attempts.
(Minimum 20 attempts)
14.6 Shaun Alexander at LSU (291 yards on 20 carries)………………………. Nov. 9, 1996
10.3 Shaun Alexander vs. Vanderbilt (206 yards on 20 carries)……….Sept. 12, 1998
9.5 Steadman Shealy vs. Mississippi State (190 yards on 20 carries)………Nov. 3, 1979
9.3 Bobby Marlow vs. Auburn (233 yards on 25 carries)…………………….. Dec. 2, 1951
IM curious about yr "minimum 20 carries"
was there an instance where someone would have been on that list with less than 20 carries?!?!
Why is USC running the ball?

two td win against a ranked team looks better than a 3 pt win against an unranked one
Got that winning feelin'
Another dominating defensive performance against Top 25 conference foe.
Ugly, but better than Florida’s win.
GMac is pissed...as he should be.

As unimpressive as this has been, it’s probably more impressive than either Florida or Texas. You’ve got to survive these to win championships.
i hate to get into impressions
but as far as that goes:
oklahoma lost half their team in the close loss to texas
the refs handed that game to uf
But, they both won, so what can you do
what you just saw us do...

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
What a frustrating F’ing game!
We have 11 penalties, four turnovers, and the damn line judge only called their right tackle once for holding when that RT was holding the whole damn game. Every time I looked he had somebody by the back of the jersey.
MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--
BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.
Could Auburn go 6-6?
They’ve still got @LSU, Ole Miss, @ Georgia, and Alabama.

Rest
This team really needs a week off. I hope we can come out of the Tennessee game with a win, and no more injuries. The off week cannot get here soon enough. We have to get healthy and fresh for the end of the season.
There was no "shoot out" along the Red River today
The rest of the top 5 looked like ass today.
UF – awful vs. unranked
UT – awful vs. #20 w/o Heisman QB (3pt faves)
VT – fail (3.5pt faves)
Boise – wtf? they’re in the top 5?
We played an awful game and were still the class of the top 5.
So then, about that
wtf mcelroy?! Thinking back, I can’t pinpoint what his problem was tonight. He didn’t get too crazy in the pocket, didn’t seem to consistently overthrow, or consistently underthrow… he just consistently missed his target all night.
Just looked seriously uncomfortable
And SC has a great defense, but he wasn’t sacked 10 times or anything – his stats are on his shoulders really. No piss poor right tackle to point the finger to or anything. What gives?
No idea...
…but look at the numbers since the Arkansas game. This is his third consecutive game where his numbers have declined. The trend is clearly going down.
well, the quality of the defenses have been improving as well
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
looked to me like he was having confidence issues. Of course, after the first quarter I think we all did.

I'm sure...
…we all remember what Shaun Alexander did to LSU his freshman year, and I still remember watching Bobby Humphrey dragging MSU defenders for 286 yards…but Mark Ingram’s game tonight is the single-best performance by an Alabama RB I’ve ever seen. It’s also the best performance I’ve seen at BDS, so I’d like to thank him for helping to erase my memories of Emmitt Smith in 1987. And as much as I loathe the Heisman trophy and what it represents, I couldn’t really argue that there’s a better player in the country right now.
Unless it’s Rolando McClain, of course.

Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
No doubt...
…but I believe his loss has elevated our D, in a way. They’ve seemed so much more focused, mainly due to the main man in the middle. Rolando’s always been a great player, but since Hightower went down, he’s stepped it up…these go to eleven….

You may be right...
…but losing a top player can refocus a unit, helping them get even more out of themselves than they might have. I know it’s only two games, but we haven’t had back-to-back defensive efforts like this in I don’t know how long.
I definitely believe we’d be a better D in the long run with Hightower…he’s incredible…but I love how we’re playing right now. I don’t want it to end…

Marquis Johnson
Marquis Johnson had a heck of a game. Johnson, along with maybe Tiffin, is the most maligned played on the team. South Carolina obviously thought that was a matchup the could exploit, and they were completely wrong. Played the ball fantastically.
Marquis...
…played the game of his life. Good for him…and us.
And Tiffin is one of the top five field goal kickers in our history, so I tend to cut him slack on his kickoff performances.

wildcat
most teams run the wildcat as a gimmick wherein you dont know which one of three players will end up with the ball
i love that when we lined up in it, there was absolutely no question who would have the ball. No gimmick in those plays whatsoever
we have got to get the passing game going to give him a rest
or he’s an injury waiting to happen.

Colorado is a sad program.....
Their fans rushed the field after beating Kansas……..to improve to 2-4.
To be fair,
they beat a ranked team. The worst rush ever was a ranked Clemson rushing the field after beating an unranked FSU team…in the FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR.
lol auburn time
i switched to some random espn network toward the end of their game
they had a critical 3rd and 1 and basically lined up like this:
q
xxx
xxxxxx
h
where h hiked the ball to q.
the second the ball hiked, refs called the play dead with falst start, because h literally turned to his side and hiked it like you would in a backyard 3 on 3 game.
Was a good lol – the fuck they trying to run over there!
I know...
….that most of this has been said by many so far tonight but I just wanted to put my two cents in.
1…I am so glad our game was not on CBS. I know we’re on CBS next weekend but those announcers today during AR-FL were idiots. On Arkansas’ goal line fumble…“Wait, that might be an incomplete pass” after running 20 or so yards. “Oh wait, it was a fumble, it might be a dead ball” WHAT???? Doesn’t a fumble mean it’s a LIVE ball? Not to mention, they just couldn’t say that we looked good against Arkansas and that’s why we won because they would have actually had to say that Florida didn’t look good, God forbid. grrrrrr….not looking forward to their announcing the TN-Bama game.
2. Mark Ingram is the man. I love how humble he is and his stat on yards after initial contact is AMAZING…sounds like he makes it kind of a game as to how many yards he can get after the first guy tries to tackle him.
3. I am so proud of Marquis Johnson. You don’t hear his name too often and evidently Steve Spurrier thought that was for a reason. WRONG!!! He held his own and hopefully will get the credit he deserves.
4. There has been a lot of talk on the blog this week about how important blocking is and I think that we can take Mark Ingram’s 200+ yards to say that we did that really well tonight. Hopefully We can put together the throwing part of the offense and only get better from there.
5. Very Interesting that Florida still has to play SC…I think they will give them a run for their money but I sort of want to be the only ones to beat them in ATL!
As for the rest of the game…it’s a W…Roll Tide!!

The only problem with SC playing Florida
is that we pre-maimed all of SC’s good players. I hope that game is several weeks away, so maybe Garcia and a few others have some time to heal. I think Hoover or Vestavia could beat them next weekend.
In case you don’t remember, I was the poster so worried about pissing off Spurrier by asking him to be our HC date. I was so worried about this game for the last month. And then to think of having to endure that knowing smile from Lou Holtz…. I am glad we escaped that one! Football—I am a bare apprentice to the grasshoppers. Basic Human Psychology—that I know a little bit about.
We are thinking about going to the TN game. I would love to see us beat the Lame Kitten. RTR, and keep up the great work at the Champagne of Bama Blogs!
