Around SBN: Defend That, Digger! The Overrated/underrated edition

Thoughts and concerns

  • While we all would have liked for the game to be much prettier, this was a good win tonight against South Carolina.  Javier Arenas was out and it didn't take a genius to see that Spurrier wanted to go after Marquis Johnson (who answered the bell).  I'm sure the scouting report for Alabama's defense says that number 24 is the weak link, and the fact that a cornerback like Arenas, who has earned All-American honors from some publications, was on the bench forced Johnson into the line of fire.
  • Speaking of scouting reports, is Greg McElroy paying too much attention?  He's known to be a cerebral guy, and at times, the worst thing a football player can do is think too much.  It looked like Hardy and Ole Miss's pass rushing reputation got to his head last week, and this week it looked like Norwood and Matthew's reputation did the same.
  • In McElroy's defense, however, South Carolina played a 4-2-5 most of the night which left them a little vulnerable to the run.  Still, the kid is obviously out of sorts.
  • James Carpenter and Drew Davis still struggle to block guys off the edge.  Tennessee, LSU, and Florida (if we make it that far...Dunlop...oh, no!) have the players to hurt us off the edge.
  • When Auburn started 5-0 I looked at their remaining schedule and said they could lose 6 of their last 7.  So far, I'm happy to say I was right in my projection.
  • Tennessee is good enough to beat us if we don't pass the ball well.  It turns my stomach to think about what Kiffin (Monte, not his assclown son) has in mind after watching McElroy against Mi'ssippi and Carolina.
  • As a receiver, Julio Jones went to waste tonight.
  • It's great to see Mark Ingram having so much success, but I am terrified that we'll become too reliant and overuse him.  We have to become more diverse on offense again.
  • Can we return a punt or kickoff without blocking someone in the back?  Man, that was frustrating.
  • The line judge in tonight's game was absolutely garbage.  South Carolina's RT repeatedly held and that son of a bitch called him what, one time?  Horrible.  I about had a meltdown.
  • This game made me so damn angry...I still don't know where one of my cats is and my wife is just now sitting next to me again.
  • Ellis Johnson and Lorenzo Ward brought their best against us.  I knew they would.
  • Hopefully Javy will return next week as will the G-Mac from the first five games.  We're going to need him to beat Tennessee.
  • Yes, I am worried about Tennessee.  Hopefully we bring our A game against them.  We have a  BYE coming up.  Let's win the Third Saturday in October and get to our break.  Then we can rest up and prepare for LSU.

couldn't agree more...

and I have to say that I read the info outloud about your cat and your wife to my boyfriend and he gave me the look like “you’re lucky I’m still sitting next to YOU”

I like that there’s room for improvement…now I’m just looking for the changes to be made

You've gotta give credit to SC too.

They should’ve won the game tonight, but fortunately for us the right things seemed to go our way despite turning the ball over on nearly EVERY promising drive.

Other than that, I’m not too concerned about UT. Barring a complete catastrophe, our defense should shut their O down completely and I feel our defense alone will win it for us. Offensively however, I don’t expect nothing at all from them considering UT’s defense is nearly about as good as ours is. I honestly believe we’ll get six (two field goals) at the most and the defense will score the rest.

But who knows? I’d hate to lose to loud mouth Kiffin, but if it happens he should give his father (not Tennessee’s father which is us) but Monte a big hug and kiss on the cheek.

After spending seven wondrous years in the state of Alabama, never in my life have I seen fans, who claim to be loyal to one team, spend more time AUbsessing over the other more so than they do their very own.

One thing

that scares me about playing Tennessee is that Monte Kiffin has two weeks to just focus and scheme against our offense. That’s not good with how bad our passing game is currently.

This upcoming season I'm gonna refer to Julio Jones as "The Magic Man" and Trent Richardson as "El Diablo"

The kickoff/punt penalties are REDICULOUS.

We have some great return men (especially Javi) and it’s being wasted by inept blocking. Aren’t the coaches supposed to teach the people what to do and (more importantly) what NOT to do when blocking on special teams?

What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

the problem is...

…whatever we’re paying the refs, it’s not enough.

I am...

…pretty sure the coaches tell the players do not block a guy in the back directly in front of the referee. Yet, that exact same thing happened at least three times tonight. They have to learn to execute much better.

"This game made me so damn angry...I still don't know where one of my cats is"

I’ve read enough funny shit on the internet that I rarely literally laugh out loud anymore, but that line gave me the giggles for a solid minute.

Kickoffs

Everyone knows both must get better. We cannot tackle on Kickoffs and the squib at the end of the first half allowed for a late field goal. We have to gt these guys down of n the first contact. Try kicking it higher with shorter distance and let coverage get down there.

Punt Coverage

I think I awoke this moring screaming at a block in the back. Especially the block that came in the second half. Julio hauls in the punt and returns it about 25 yards or so. Anyway, I think it was Norwood that was blocked. He stood in front of Julio for about 2 full seconds (it seemed as if) and our player (forget who it was) just runs straight into the back of the S.C. player where the damn ball was just received in front of 3 refs. How can you play football and pratice that much and still make that bonehead mistake.
Absolutely ridiculous!

Lucky!

All I did was make the baby cry and get banned from the den for the evening. The yelling (and sometimes kicking) doesn’t scare my cat anymore; he just comes in the bedroom and coughs up a hairball and about a half a pound of catfood on my carpet in the middle of the night to remind me who’s boss. What am I doing wrong?

McElroy does seem to be devolving. He not only threw into coverage AGAIN; he made some VERY inaccurate throws last night. He needs to get his act together if we’re going to win some games in the second half of this season.

Fortunately, the offensive line seems to be playing about as good as could be expected. And, Mark Ingram continues to grow into a dominant should-be-leading-Heisman-candidate running back. And, of course, our defense is just … well, damn!

UT defense scares me

but I think we can stop their offense (I have no idea how they dominated UGA.)

If both defenses stop each other then the game comes down field postion and that hinges on turnovers and special teams. We need to make some improvement this week in kick off coverage and return blocking.

I think it will be another low scoring game something like Bama 17- UT 3. Of course scoring 2 offensive TD’s for us could be tough, so maybe it is Bama 13- UT 3.

We will need Tiffin to play solid.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

well when we were wondering last week who was inhabiting Crompton's body

we now know. It’s McElroy. And we got Crompton last night.

Next week we will use a bamagrad invocation outside of the stadium and get this freaky friday shit over

"You have to create 6 seconds of hell each play..."

I might have to end the invocations

since we have struggled so badly offensively since I started doing them.

Of course, the defense has still been exceptional. Maybe I just need to modify the invocation a little.

MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.
