The Julio Problem

We’ve got a problem with Julio Jones. Now Julio is not the problem. The guy goes out every week and gives it his all. Even when we don’t throw the ball to him he is still blocking like crazy, breaking up interceptions, causing fumbles and in general doing whatever he can to help Bama win. Plus, you will never hear him complain about not getting the ball. He is actually a team player who wants what is best for the team.

But...not getting Julio the ball is not best for Alabama. First of all not getting Julio the ball is costing us points. But, it goes way beyond the scoreboard.

Julio Jones was the #1 player in the country coming out of high school. We probably got him because he lived in Alabama. But he is known around the country. Right now the 2011 number #1 player, the 2012 #1 player, and the 2013 #1 player are watching Alabama on ESPN. What are they seeing? Julio Jones, former #1 player not even getting the football. What will happen when they are approached by Coach Saban or our assistant coaches about coming to Alabama? They are going to be thinking "No way am I going there because look what happened to Julio."

And, if they don’t think about this coaches form the other teams are going to tell them about it. We will have a hard time, a very hard time convincing, the stud receivers like AJ Green or Calvin Johnson to come to Bama.

What will that mean? Well maybe nothing. Maybe we can win it all on defense and running the ball without stud receivers. But maybe not.

In the late 70's Bama was the best team in the country. There was a high school kid in GA named Herschel Walker. He didn’t really fit our wishbone scheme and so we either didn’t try very hard or didn’t try at all to get him and he went to UGA. We won the NC in 78 & 79 but in 1980 UGA with Herschel won the NC. In 1982 we didn’t even get Bo Jackson and he was from Alabama. Again I’m not sure if it was from not trying or what. But, I always wondered what would have happened if we would have been willing to change to the I backfield if Herschel would have come. Hey, we might have gotten Bo as well. We won it all in 78 & 79, but passed or missed on both Walker and Jackson and have only one NC in the last 30 years. It is a team game but winning individual awards, like the Heisman, will help your team in the short and long run.

All I’m saying is we have a problem with Julio because he is that good.. If he doesn’t get the ball a bunch and make All American next year (no way he makes it this year his stats are nothing) he will still sign a big NFL deal but Bama could suffer for squandering the receiver of a generation, even if we win the National Championship this year. Personally I doubt we can win the NCG, or even the SECCG, without Julio making many catches.

We can fix blame wherever we want but I think our coaches have got to figure out how to get the ball into Julio’s hands. I can promise you that if he were playing for anyone in the conference, even Vandy, he’d at least be All-SEC. He will be lucky to get any votes for All-SEC based on his stats for the 1st 7 games. Hopefully we will fix this problem on Saturday. If we don’t we will regret it.

Speaking of AJ Green...

What’s Georgia’s record? 4-3 with Green and an out-of-conference loss at Oklahoma St. with Green.

I know what you’re say, but pick a better example of WR.

Nobody more than Greg whats to fix the passing game, so trust the Tide it will happen and all will be good in T’town.

It is frustrating

To see one of the greatest WRs in Alabama history not put up flashy numbers, but at the same time, I love his attitude. You know he has to be frustrated, yet he continues to go out and do the little things, like hold his block. What a baller.

One thing

that I will never ever worry about with Nick Saban and his staff is recruiting. I do see your point though and I wish we could get him the ball more.

This upcoming season I'm gonna refer to Julio Jones as "The Magic Man" and Trent Richardson as "El Diablo"

I for one...

think that we should get him involved in the rushing attack with the wild cat and or some sweeps. The problem is he draws attention and defenders but he has no problem pushing aside DB’s. The biggest reason I think Julio is not getting the ball is franky McElroys arm is weak! Hear me out
1)He can’t get the ball there on a rope like even JP could. Don’t get me wrong up until last week he was killer accurate but every deep ball was under thrown. Usually the receivers did not have the CB’s beat so that is what you are supposed to do but as displayed in the “trick play” TD against Arky even with Julio wide open McElroy way under threw the ball. Even the come back route is dangerous because he can’t get it there fast enough to not let the DB jump the route.
2) Julio is double and triple teamed which leaves others like Colin Peek wide open, giving McElroy open receivers on the crossing route. Crossing routes are more about timing then arm strength…

Maybe I’m way off base here but frankly I feel the best way to get Julio involved is to get him into the rushing attack and short wide receiver screens etc…

the pass itself was waaaayyyy short

but it was still beautiful to look down the field and see julio standing there waiting for it…

I agree with you

I worry about the exact same thing. But I’ll tell you, I think Julio is not as close to 100% as the coaches have let on. I think he is still injured and just gritting it out each game.

MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

Bo Loved Bama

we told him he was too small to play in the SEC…

For real?

Wow.

However, it isn’t as if that’s the only talent "Bama’s passed on. The amount of talent that is interested in you guys likely exceeds your carrying capacity annually.

That is the most uninformed comment I've seen in a while on here...

On top of being completely untrue, it’s even a dumb guess. Bo went to API because they promised him he would start as a Freshman. It is really that simple. Alabama was already loaded with talent and told him he would have to earn his spot and the cow college promised him a starting job immediately (which they gave him, by the way).

Bo

Another huge reason that Bo went to Auburn was because of the uncertainity remaining around Coach Bryant. There was a lot of uncertainity around that program. Also, if anyone ever saw Bo run he could have gone anywhere and played immediately. Bo, Herschel, and McFadden are probably the three best runnigbacks to ever play in the SEC. Emmit Smith should probably be in the conversation too, but I give the nod to McFadden.

Uncertainity

When I am mentioning the uncertainity around Alabama it had more to do with the fact that Paul Bryant was coming to the end of his career, and no one knew who was going to take over. Also, Coach Dye was pretty good recruiter.

I

don’t know… Shaun Alexander and D-Mac are close… hard to really put one over the other.
