Anyone from, or lived in, Hawai'i?

The girlie and I are currently working on a deal to buyout a real estate/litigation firm on the Big Island (no more midden snowstorms for me, thanks). And, the deal has to be consummated by 12/31/2009. Culturally, it seems a huge jump...much akin to moving to a foreign nation, and becoming an ex-pat. Anything I should know? Does each island have its own vibe? Is the cost of living (milk, gas, etc) really as bad as we've been led to believe? Any advice before we lay out my life's savings would be greatly appreciated...either about becoming a quasi-expat or the Island would be very helpful.

Thanks

I've never lived there, but

I have heard that it can be hard on mainlanders who move full time to the islands. In other words, the locals like you when you stay for a week or two and spend money, but the old aloha spirit isn’t quite the same when you talk about taking up permanent residence.

But then again, my wife has distant relatives who’ve lived in Honolulu for about 25 years and love it. Maybe it’s what you make of it and if you’re not constantly telling people how you did it back on the mainland, they’re nicer to you. I’m sure there are people from up North who would feel the same about moving to Alabama.

What part of the Big Island?

the deal has to be consummated

I’ve consummated a deal or two in Hawaii, if you know what I’m talking about.

MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

Don't feel bad.

Once those agents get you to come to the presentation, there’s almost no way to avoid buying a timeshare.

Exactly

It’s just like that Wyndham timeshare I have in Vegas.

I lived there twice...

…because my dad was stationed there. I graduated there, I’ve been back to visit lots. And it remains my favorite place on the earth (next to, of course, Bryant Denny on Game Day). Because there is such a HUGE military presence there you won’t feel like an expat at all.

The Hawaiian Style vibe is very laid back, very welcoming, very family oriented…sound familiar? My Southern self felt VERY at home there.

And oh, MY GOSH, the scenery there takes your breath away. The mountains, the ocean, the sunsets…Even just writing this makes me homesick for it…If you move there I sincerely hope you’ll post pictures here…

I've heard it's pretty laid back,

But, it can also be hard on the haoles. Obviously, this wouldn’t be a few-year gig. This is something that you plan for and then intend to spend your life there. My kiddo is 11, and me and the girlie have very few ties on the mainland (older, small families, mainly), so it would be a nice adventure. And, hell, can’t beat the price of paradise!

plus...

if (God FORBID) we ever get another crappy coach and go on probation again, the Tide will come to you for their “non-bowl-bowl game”…Thanks Fran!

Seriously, the first time we moved there I was 7, and the next time we moved there I was 16. I’m a tall, pale-skinned, redheaded girl. And most of my friends were little-bitty oriental girls. There are some a**h**@#^& that give haoles a hard time, but, really…there are a#$#H&*&s everywhere…and you’re right…it’s paradise.

I wasn’t kidding about posting pictures. Of the scenery, though, not the consummation…

If we do it...

Pics will be forthcoming. Promise.

Now, I need to start practicing my Haka.

pretty easy to keep out of trouble with the locals

as with anywhere in the world: if you are cool to them, they will reciprocate.

My husband lived there as a kid

and loved it, in spite of all the Japanese kids constantly playing Pearl Harbor with him as the Arizona. I think he said that you don’t have to wear shoes to school as a little kid—can’t remember if it was high school or middle school when you had to start. He talks all the time about wanting to go back. He was on Oahu and his Dad was a military doc. He next moved to DC for 25 years and then to Baldwin County, AL. So, his favorite line is: “I lived in Hawaii and was a Howlie, then I moved to DC and was a Honkie, and now I’m in Alabama and I’m a Yankee.”

my uncle lives on kaui and my mom on oahu

never been tot he big island though. i heard that it’s both “the place to buy man, now’s the time” and also “thats where all the broke ass rednecks and tweekers are” i’d say go there and see it for yourself before you make anything close to a large investment especially if you plan on bringing your family there. schools are horrible, but the scenery and lifestyle are second to none. it’s freakin beautiful there. but Hilo and Kona are supposed to have there problem areas. just like b-ham and mobile i’m sure.

also they really dont take kindly to haoli investors who are just there to drive rent prices up and dont become part of the community. FWIW, my uncle was a hoali who is pretty much totaly accepted by the locals and has made friends all over the place. but it wasn’t easy and he had to work at gaining the the trust and respect of many of the locals. (he’s a carpenter and has built a small business out there after 15 years of working and meeting folks). my mom works at pearl harbor for the navy and lives in a suburb ont he windward side of oahu, it’s great but super expensive, and she’s not really too connected to the “locals” it’s more of a rich/retiree’s area where she lives. and thats basicaly for safety reasons. she’s not even trying to get involved in all that.

welcome to the SEC kiffykins...
