Thoughts after 8-0

The last time I wrote one of these we were 4-0 and heading to the bluegrass of Lexington, Kentucky for our first SEC road game.  Greg McElroy's name was being whispered as a Heisman candidate, our defense had just performed brilliantly over four games, Julio Jones seemed to be back, and we thought we had the makings of a diverse, high-powered offense.

A month later, thanks to four bleeping physical games, we are 8-0, heading to a much needed week off.  Greg McElroy has shown the passing ability that made him John Parker Wilson's backup (and that's the "Oh, God, please, God, please don't let Wilson get hurt" backup) in 2007 and 2008, Julio is seemingly back, and our offense is completely one-dimensional and archaic.

So let's begin.

  • Let me just say, wow.  Everything went against us in the last three minutes and forty-five seconds of the game.  Up until Cody blocked that kick.  I stood up, bracing myself for a defeat to Tennessee, and the football I expected to see soaring up and through the goalposts ran into a mountain of manliness named Cody.  Outsidethesidelines said it best in his writeup.  He went from campus legend and college football folk hero to mythical, up there with Stabler, Krauss, and Van Tiffin.  He is truly a godsend.
  • Tennessee took control of the game in the second half, and that's frustrating because we could have and should have put it away with our last drive of the first half and our first possession of the second half.  2nd and two from the four yard line and we throw two straight passes?  That's three downs we could have used to get a first and goal, and we didn't.  Then, after stopping them to start the second half, we get a great punt return, a tripping penalty by the Volunteers, and we go three and out after getting stoned on a third and one play.  Fitzgerald's punt after this was inadequate, and we end up watching Tennessee take about 8 minutes off the clock.
  • Talking to some of my old teammates, the thought is that McElroy is going through his reads too quickly before the routes have developed.  I don't know crap about quarterback play, but I can tell you this.  He's not getting the ball downfield and we haven't scored more than one touchdown since the Kentucky game.  If you remember correctly, our offense struggled in that game also.
  • Monte Kiffin called a great game, but we helped him by playing exactly into his schemes.  We ran when he wanted us to run and passed when he wanted us to pass.
  • That game reminded me of the Ole Miss and Kentucky games from 2008.
  • LSU looked good, but again, they were playing an Auburn team that is falling apart.  The commentators said Gene Chizik had turned his radar on for signs of discontent.  Well, Coach, they're everywhere.  Good luck stopping the bleeding.
  • I don't want to toot my own horn, but again, when Auburn started 5-0 I said/wrote they could lose 6 of their last 7.  Since that day, they are 0-3.
  • Colin Peek, please get healthy.
  • Greg McElroy, please regain the patience that made you a star in the early going.

I should add

that while I don’t think Greg McElroy played a great game, he didn’t play a terrible one and his effort was good enough to get us a nine point lead with the ball with less than four minutes remaining. The receivers also dropped at least four passes.

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

I agree...

G-Mac has most definitely been going through his reads too quickly. Usually, thats a sign that a QB is not comfortable in the pocket- i.e. he doesnt trust that his O-line will give him enough time to let the play develop. He took some pretty hard shots in the past few games, which is probably making him a bit gun shy. I think the O-line actually did a pretty good job on protection last night, though.

Some thoughts of my own

It seems the only team in the SEC with a quality offense is Arkansas at this point. Aubarn is no longer executing like they were, UF has had red zone issues similar to our own (Tebow even threw two TWO pick sixes last night), and LSU is… pitiful on offense. I told myself last night I wasn’t even gonna think about what other teams are doing when we have so many problems of our own, but this does seem to be a bit of a theme in the SEC. I know we constantly hang our hats on SEC defenses being the toughest in the country, but is that more true this year than in years past? There are six SEC teams in the top 25 for total yards per game allowed, and we have played three of them in the last three weeks (and will play at least one more before the season is over). I realize this is a chicken or the egg type question, but it is certainly worth considering.

On a somewhat related note, I stubbornly refuse to believe Greg Mcelroy is just an inherently bad Quarterback. I’m not denying he has had three bad game in a row now, but I can’t imagine he set a record for TD passes in a season by being lucky, and he did garner hefty acclaim for his accuracy at the Manning Passing Academy. Why he has been performing so poorly to date has bothered me to no end, and I think the above post begins to answer those questions. At any rate, I still believe he can turn it around, but I’ll accept my helping of crow if I’m wrong.

The last thing that is baffling me, is why we seem so averse to running up the middle. We have three running backs who could start for just about anyone, and that alone should enough to pick up two yards, even against a stacked box, and if it wasn’t successful I’d at least understand the play calling. I wonder if part of the problem is a lack of confidence in the offensive line, but even so I’d think passing would seem the more risky option. I know this isn’t a unique question, but it still begs an answer after three straight games of the same playcalling, in the same situations.

It just blows my mind that an offense could click on all cylinders for four games, and then display such ineptitude, and abandon everything that previously made it successful in the next four games.

Thoughts 3.0

I bought a Cody jersey about a month ago, he has now cemented himself as LEGEND! That’s really all you can say about his performance — simply unthinkable!

The dirty Orange should have won that game. We left 4 points on the field by throwing on those two plays instead of pounding it into the end zone but the dirty Orange left 9 points on the field with one missed & two blocked FGs.

Listening to CNS after the game, he was very frustrated with the play calling – I wouldn’t be a bit suprised if this is Coach Mac’s last season in the Crimson.

Running the wildcat has become very successful & helps take pressure off of McElroy – why don’t we work up some Star Jackson plays & use him as a run/pass option for about 5-10 plays per game? That would take even more pressure off of McElroy & give defenses that much more to prepare for. Surely that would add value to our offense don’t you think?

Originally I wanted to put up 40+ points & run the Vols out of the stadium but now that it’s over, I think it was actually better to give the dirty Orange all the hope in the world, only to rip it away in the final seconds! ::rubbing hands together & laughing like Dr. Evil::

I dont think Star is the running threat everyone seems to think, but I could be wrong. I agree with all the previous posts though. I know little about football Xs and Os, but I honestly think I could have called as good a game as Coach Mac. I know on 2 and 2 inside the four I would have run the ball twice and I know Ingram would have had more touches, especially from the wildcat. Thanks Bamagrad for the info on McElroy. I think you are right about him going thru the reads too quickly. That makes sense why Julio and Co. cannot get open, they are being given enough time to shake the defender and let the play develop. I think GMac has a pretty weak arm and he has a hard time getting the ball downfield on a rope. His passes take time and defenders are getting breakups too often. Of course our WRs are not really helping with the dropped balls that hit their hands. Here’s hoping the bye weak is the medicine we need.

Star is a running threat as a pocket passer....

….like Steve McNair, not a passing threat as a running QB, like Tyrod Taylor.

+1

And with some of the throws I’ve seen him make in the A-Day game and limited game action earlier this year, I think to replace McElroy with him would be a mistake. I don’t think Star’s able to read defenses like he should yet, and he floats the ball quite a bit. Say what you will about McElroy’s production, but he’s not killing us with turnovers, something I think may be a problem with Star. He’s only a RS Freshman, and I’m optimistic that he’ll develop into a good quarterback for us, unlike about 90% of the message board crowd who declare him a total bust as a recruit because he’s not thrown 74 touchdowns yet.

He looked good in relief against UNT...

…but that was UNT, and he still didn’t do as well as McElroy. He’s not ready, and we won’t throw him in unless, knock on wood/God forbid, it’s because of injury or we figure a way to work him into some gimmick plays (probably in the Wildcat).

This is what I was thinking, he could run but he is a pass first QB that is elusive. For some reason I have the impression that many folks think he is a Tyrod Taylor, Mike Vic, type QB.

Agree

with you guys. We were lucky to win that game but actually Kiffin played it too conservative with 45 seconds at the end. We were clearly tired and they could have easily run or passed it 10 more yards closer and then the kicker gets more elevation rather than trying to hit a long low one. Kiffin put way too much faith in a long field goal attempt which he had to know at the end of the game Bama would have rushed all 11 in desperation and the chances of a block go up because they could not block out everyone. But to have the same guy in the same hole busting through twice in ten minutes shows they made no adjustments. Fatal mistake on Kiffin’s part.

GMac actually played better this week than last week. A lot of the problem is that we don’t have Andre Smith protecting his backside and giving him confidence. We are going to need to keep the running back in more for blocking and even the tight end.

Plus throwing long on Eric Berry is excatly what UT wants. We were smart to keep the passes under 20 yards.

GMac will be better against LSU as will our rested team.

Simply put..

Defense wins championships…and we have the best defense in the nation, and too be honest, its not even close…The quick reaction to this game is that Bama played down too the competition, struggled on offense, and was lucky too escape with a W….but after taking a second glance at the film it becomes apparent that UT played their best game on defense by missing very few tackles, were extremely gap-disciplined (which is huge b/c of Ingram’s penchant for using cut-back lanes), were very opportunistic in their blitz and coverage schemes, and with Berry they were able to limit Bama from making the big play that prevented us from, as many good OC’s call it, “putting air in the defense”. McElroy didn’t play his best, this is for certain, but he was MUCH better than his past two games…his throws were a lot more accurate and had decent zip on the ball…if you go back and look at the tape from the SC game, it was down right scary how off target he was a lot of the time….and while he was going through his progression too fast, at least he wasn’t staring down Julio and throwing into double-coverage, like he had previously, which is considerably worse…and most importantly, he didn’t turn the ball over and put our defense in a bad position and we maintained good field position….this is crucial for playing the QB position for this team….to win games this year we arent’ going to have to score 30-40 points….we are going to have to limit turnovers…take advantage of take-aways…and play outstanding Defense and Special Teams….and CNS knows this….this team isn’t built to be an offensive juggernaut. Lastly, the notion that we were lucky to escape this game with a W…..the fact of the matter is that Tennessee was lucky to even have a shot to win it…down by 9 with a little less than 4 minutes left, no timeouts, and giving Alabama a first down with a roughing the kicker penalty is not a position you want to be in….Lucky is having a RB who has never fumbled in his career put one on the turf at the most vulnerable time…Lucky is a “hands” team failiing to secure an obvious onside kick in the waining moments of the game…Lucky is throwing a dart in about a 2ft windown down the middle of the field to a TE that is blanketed perfectly AND gets a massive lick from Robby Green. Alabama won a hard-fought rivalry football game against a quality, well-rested, well-prepared, well-coached SEC opponent that had nothing to lose and everything to gain. While they should by no means be satisfied with the quality of their peformance, relative to their potential…they should however be excited about the W and use the lessons learned as building blocks towards future success. Agreed.

If any thing Bama was unlucky to be in such a desperate situation. The only real mistake we made on D was leaving that guy who made the TD wide open. If we have him covered and tackle him at say the 5, it takes UT more time to score or maybe they don’t score etc. either way there is probably no FG at the end.

If the UT kicker falls down, or the ball is snapped over the holder etc., or the kick was just wide right etc. that would be luck. But we were not lucky, we made the play when we needed to make the play. That is what winners do. They find away.

Agreed. How about some credit to Tiffin. Over the yrs I have really been down on him, but he has been solid this year and he deserves credit too.

It would have been excellent for McElroy to have had a day yesterday like he did against non-conference teams and beat UcheaT 35-0, but this was a typical SEC day and one that reminded me of 3rd Saturdays when I was a kid and Bear was there! It was thrilling and heartstopping to say the least. I was screaming and had NO voice by the end! I had to go outside and LISTEN to the ending so my child couldn’t hear what I was saying! And McElroy was improved from the previous two weeks. The SEC is the best conference in the country….we all know that. He is certain of it now too!!

Point here, we ARE 8-0. We have a LOT of guys who need a break to get those dings healed up. Mentally, this comes at the best of times! Just 4 left after OUR bye. Remember ‘92? Those weren’t all pretty wins, but they were wins.
