After spending a few hours last night poking around the NCAA football rule book, I see what bobo_the_vol was trying to say, and I now agree with him. My initial interpretations of a few different clauses in the rule book were incorrect. Upon further reading, Rule 4-3-h means exactly what I said it did not mean (oops). The rule that I was leaning on to provide that interpretation, after another few reads through, doesn't support my assertion as I thought it did. As a result, the initial post was incorrect: the ball was not dead before Julio fell on it. As far as this particular play is concerned, it's a distinction with no difference as the ball was never bobbled around and there wasn't a Tennessee player anywhere in the vicinity of it when Julio touched it, so the final conclusion of this post is still valid. Regardless, I regret the error and appreciate bobo_the_vol taking the time to educate my stubborn self .
My SBNation signature isn't "I'm wrong all the time" for no reason. I screwed up a rule interpretation in yesterday's post on the Cody penalty. Primary credit goes to bobo_the_vol who was, I think, the first person to point out the error. Apologies for that -- I have earned and will accept your mocking and criticism in the comments below.

Most of us...
…only mock when somebody does/says something that just screams for it. This post is the most mature and professional one I’ve read from you, so all I can say about it is…well done.
I can’t speak for all the readers, obviously…especially the orange clad ones….

Ok I see where
you are coming from. But, does Julio have to fall on it? I would think as soon as it stopped moving, like a punt, the ball would be whistled dead and the game would be over. It looked to me like the ball had either stopped or moving or was near to stopping.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
That is correct
it’s at the official’s discretion to determine when the ball has stopped moving (which it had before Julio touched it). Julio didn’t have to touch it. It’s just like a punt once it goes past the neutral zone.
MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--
BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.
Does Lame Kitten know yet?

I think he’s still sitting outside of BDS with Lincoln waiting on his re-kick.

Wow...
I love a man that knows how to say “I was wrong”.
Way to go, sir.
Thankfully this doesn’t change the score. Does the fact that we still won the game serve as flavoring for that crow?

Do I understand correctly that, since it would have been Alabama’s ball anyway, a flag for Cody (which I’ve always said should have been thrown) would have only backed us up 15 yards, with it still in our possession?
Yes
Everything else in the post (so far as I know, knock on wood, etc.) is 100% accurate, the only problem was that I said that the ball was dead as soon as it touched the ground on the other side of the neutral zone, which is not true. For all intents and purposes, once it crosses the line you can think of it like a punt… so UT could’ve downed it or we could have picked it up and returned it, etc.

Julio should have taken it in for a TD to make the score look better… how dare he seal a W for the game by merely taking a knee?!?! If he weren’t so smart and had any ounce of haughtiness, he would have done the selfish thing here and made us look better!
Julio picking up
the ball and running with it was the only way we could lose the game. If he was running along and then was stripped and UT recovered the unsportsman penalty could have been called and UT could have had another kick.
Smart player know that on the last play of the game if you are ahead you always want to just down the ball and end the game.

No, that’s not right at all. He would have had to have scored. Tennessee having possession of the ball at the end of the play would not have entitled them to a re-kick.

It takes a big man
to admit when he’s wrong. You sir, are a giant.
