A few thoughts: the Kentucky game
Just a disclaimer: I'm writing this without having studied a replay of the game, so any corrections, comments or contradictions will be welcome.
1. Thank God for poor decisions by Hartline. This game should have been much closer than it was, but fortunately some really boneheaded plays by UK's quarterback changed momentum and allowed us to put the game away.
2. From what I saw, we reallymiss Hightower. Cory Reamer had an "okay" game...6 tackles including a very nice stop behind the line. Cory's a gutty, intelligent player, who doesn't make mental mistakes or get himself out of position, but from a physical standpoint he looks a bit overmatched at times. In a nutshell, there's a huge difference between a 215 pound guy and a 260 pound guy when it comes to shedding blocks...and Cory was blocked often. This is also why I don't think Harris will necessarily be the answer, either.
3. I was quite disappointed that UK was able to put together a 14 play drive in the 4th quarter against our first team defense. To be honest, on the drives that Kentucky didn't shoot themselves in the foot via penalties or turnovers, it looked like they were able to move the ball very effectively against us...particularly with the run.
4. I realize that we were going against the wind in the first quarter, and Greg's errant throws were largely blamed on that by Coach Saban and the broadcasters. However, it looked to me like Greg was suffering from an acute case of "Brodieitis" instead. For those of you unfamiliar, it's a condition that causes the sufferer to compulsively launch 40 yard bombs when you only need 6 or 8 yards for the first down. Here's hoping this was the first and last time that Greg will be afflicted by this heartbreaking malady.
5. I'm as big a fan of Coach Saban as you're likely to meet, but I completely disagree with the pass to the end zone at the end of the game. Why make enemies and invite criticism when you don't have to?
Don't misunderstand me: I'm delighted with the win, and will be making my way out to celebrate within the hour....any road win in the SEC is a great win. I just think that the coaching staff will have several "teachable moments" this week, especially with a road trip to Ole Miss looming.

sheesh...
tough crowd around here.
…another double digit win today (3 scores today)…
bama is scoring 30+ points per game now…(5 in a row)…compare that to last season’s ‘down’ games…
it would be nice to play invincible and win every game 50 to nothing, but give this team a break (as a fan)…
no worries, if this is what a down game is goin to be…then the rest of this season should pan out nicely.

deep throws
i was wondering that too, sandman. those missed deep throws caused us several 3 and outs. it gave the impression we didn’t think we could drive against those guys. the mid-range throw was much more effective. who called those?

Item 5
It was so out of character for Saban, that I think there was something going on that we did not see. On other occassions this year, the team has had an opportunity to add a field gaol at the end (VT, Arky, and one other). In each case, Saban chose to “go for it” with a running play on fourth down – essentially foregoing the points. Very classy and not-Urban like.
When we lined up for the first field goal at the end of the game, I said to my wife “we will not score here, and the final score will be 38-20.” Sure enough, we faked it, and did not score. I think the fake was as much about not putting more points up than it was anything else. Which makes the deep pass 3 plays later somewhat confusing.
I will say this, at the end of the day, the pass was incomplete, and my initial predicition was correct. Had we run it, the clock would have stopped anyway on Change of Possession. So maybe a pass out of the endzone was the safest way to get out of the 4/9 situation without running up the score with a field goal.

5. I’m as big a fan of Coach Saban as you’re likely to meet, but I completely disagree with the pass to the end zone at the end of the game. Why make enemies and invite criticism when you don’t have to?
My god. I really hope this fan-base doesn’t turn into the bunch of pansified sissies. Seriously. Coach Saban is not in the business of “making friends” or “avoiding criticism.” He’s in the business of winning football games. This is Division-I College Football in the SEC. Take the training wheels off. Put down the bumpers. If you don’t want a team to score 35 points on you: STOP THEM.
This game was never really a blow-out and Alabama never really looked phenomenal. The same philosophy that governs putting in the second string (getting them game-time experience) can easily be applied to situations where you’re ahead by a couple of scores. The starters need more experience, too, and that’s not just “run up the middle and punt” experience. It’s experience running a real offense against an SEC-caliber defense.
If we were up by 40 points and had put on a dominating performance all day, I might agree with you, but we won that game by just barely over three scores. Anyone who whines about running up the score with such a close margin needs to watch tee-ball as a pass-time instead of college football.
I'm wrong all the time.

To a point...
I agree with you. The other team ALWAYS is responsible for their opponent’s score: that’s really not what I’m saying. I had no problem with the fake field goal, nor leaving the starters in for the entire game.
And it’s not the case of not wanting to beat the other team as badly as possible…I guess what I’m saying is, if we were going to beat them by 4 scores, I would have rather seen us do it by not letting them run a 14 play drive on us in the 4th quarter. Just kick the damn field goal.,

Totally agree.
I see nothing wrong, nothing, with throwing the ball at the end.
If you remember GMac threw a similar pass on Auburn last year when were up by way more points (29) and no one had a problem because he was gaining experience. Well guess what, he still needs the practice this is only his 5th game. And, so do our receivers, especially the one who dropped that pass (McCoy if I remember.)
As far as UK being mad at us, how many BBall games have I seen them shooting the three on us when were down 20? Tons.
And besides, we don’t play them again for 5 years and it wasn’t that big a deal that they will remember 5 years later. And even if they do, will that make them play harder?
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

Give them a break
I agree with PeteHoliday, and also want to point out that I am not one of those fans who because of a tough game wants to point out what I think is bad about my team. It seems we had a game plan and stuck with it we wanted to pass. Ky is a good team even in the Fl game they did good things. They are well coached and we did what we needed to do to adjust and we had great coverage on the 2 long passes they were just good throws, it could of happened to any team( you get lucky once in awhile) and hey if the star of any team was out wouldnt you practice going to that side, it seems like they wanted to test Reamer they knew what they were doing. If you ran anyone that many times towards someone they are bound to get some yards……..Go Bama

You and Jigga
are absolutely right….I should have pointed out the many positives in this game as well, and because I didn’t the post came off much more negatively than I intended. Jigga’s right in that it shows how far we’ve come that we can play far from our best game, and still win convincingly. And let me say this: even when the score was 7-6 and we were on the 1-inch line, I never had any doubts as to the outcome of the game…something that would have never happened during the Shula years.

The pass on fourth down
We don’t know what the play call was, but it could have been the same deal as the TD McElroy threw in the Auburn game last year. Maybe the Kentucky defense jumped his first read (which I assume would have been at the first down marker) and McElroy naturally progressed to his second read, the fade.
The call was probably designed just to get a first down but rather than force a throw into tight coverage, McElroy chose to throw it over the coverage to a spot where only his receiver could make a play on the ball.

CNS running up the score?
I don’t think so. The gulf between the top 3 rated teams and everybody else is so great that there is really no need to impress anyone. My own impression of the end zone strike was that the play call did not come from the side line at all. After the fake FG succeeded, McElroy was probably given discretion to run whatever plays he wanted. On 4th down, the young man decided it would be fun to throw a pass into the end zone. And he was right, it was fun even if it was incomplete.

Alabama did NOT try to run up the score on Kentucky...
First off, kicking the field goal on fourth down is running it up. We didn’t. Instead, we faked the field goal, because that was the best way to get the first down and then run out the clock. Second, the pass on fourth down and long at the end of the drive was the only logical play for the situation. If we had run, the clock would have stopped anyway due to the Turnover on Downs, so instead we passed to get the yards. If it were fourth and 3 or 4, we would’ve run, just like we did against Arkansas. I will repeat: Kicking a field goal is running it up; running the ball on fourth and long with some time still left is stupid unless you think you can make it. Our goal was to run out the clock; if we ran into the goal line on the way, then whoop-dee-doo. Coach Saban made the right choice on both fronts, and if you consider that we didn’t run it up against any other team this year, I’d expect people to give us the benefit of the doubt.
