Bye Week Open Thread: What Are You Watching?

Tobias_funke_medium
You might say we're "bye curious."

The Crimson Tide aren't the only ones who needed a bye week in the worst way. There are a few good ones today (Ole Miss/Auburn, SC/Tennessee, Texas/OSU, Oregon/USC, and I think Florida is playing today but I'm not sure, haven't really heard anything about it this week) so the football will definitely be on, but a week without having to invest emotionally in a game is a much needed break.

Lately, our games have been exhausting to watch. I needed the bye week.

I’ll be at work watching whatever is available on ESPN360. Unfortunately, I don’t get to watch the Cocktail Party, though I’m DVR’ing it just in case UGA can pull the upset.

Won't be surprised if...

Iowa loses to Indiana.
I’m not saying they will, but I think it is definitly possible. This Iowa team doesn’t really win, they just seem to find a way to not lose, even to the cupcake teams they play, and I think it will catch up to them eventually… why not this week?

by 1st and 15 on Oct 31, 2009 10:28 AM CDT reply actions

That's been on my upset meter this week

Iowa loses one (and only one) inexplicable home game a year. And, they traditionally struggle against the spread (Ark. St., UNI, Mich, etc). Indiana has a run spread that may give the Hawkeyes fits.

You looked prophetic for 3 qtrs!

Iowa is the second best 4th qtr team in div 1A…next to the Tide. Down 10 at the start of the 4th and with 7 minutes to go they’re up 11…

I don't know...

They’ve played a few close games this year, and I just don’t think this will be one of them. They will lose a game this year, just don’t see it being to Indiana, as they suck pretty bad.

I do, however, see UGA playing UF very close. VERY close. Definitely close enough to cover the 16.

Indiana's offense fascinates me.

They’re running a no-huddle, but it’s not a hurry-up. They have substitutions and they get all the plays from the sideline, they just never huddle.

They also just drove it down the throat of Iowa’s “vaunted” defense. 7-0 Hoosiers.

well, as much as everyone has bitched about officiating in recent weeks

the real problem is that the crews do not call this infraction or any of the others that are in place solely for the safety of the players. they’ll drop an unsportsmanlike flag in a second but god forbid they ever take a chance on calling someone for a horsecollar tackle.

tebow

so easy... even an Auburn fan can do it!

by K. brevis on Oct 31, 2009 6:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really a fair comparison...

Tebow wasn’t a starter in his freshman year, but he still scored 13 touchdowns.

Furthermore, again it’s not really a fair comparison because you are comparing a quarterback and a tailback, and a quarterback will typically get a lot more touches. Herschel Walker basically wrapped up his three year college career with basically 1,000 touches. By comparison, Tebow has already had over 1400 touches in his college career, and he’ll get another 200 or 300 before his career is over.

Again, it’s not really a fair comparison… Tebow will get more touchdowns, but he’ll also end up with about 700 more career touches too.

There's no way Mauer leaves Minnesota.

The Twins would completely lose their fan base if they let him leave, especially since the whole argument behind the taxpayer funded stadium was that the new revenue would allow them to expand the payroll and keep players like him.

by rugman11 on Oct 31, 2009 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm thinking you are right...

I imagine that the Twins match any offer that Mauer gets, so I’m thinking he stays at home. On the other hand, I do wonder about whether or not that could possibly limit them financially in terms of signing / retaining other key players.

And honestly I’m not sure how much the Yanks will go after him. They’d love to have him, obviously, but the best prospect in the farm system now is Jesus Montero, a big-time power hitting catcher. I’m sure they’ll make him an offer, but probably not enough to justify him leaving Minnesota.

I don't think it gets that far.

I see the Twins giving him 6 years/$90-95 million before his current contract runs out.

by rugman11 on Oct 31, 2009 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe so...

I’m really interested in just seeing what kind of contract he commands. Players of his mold — good defensive catchers who can rake at the plate to boot — are just so rare that it’s really difficult to value them correctly, and of course that’s only magnified by catcher’s generally having such relatively short careers.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens, but you’re right… if the Twins have a brain, they won’t let him get on the open market. Once you do that, and all those offers start rolling in, anything can happen.

I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if he got more than that. If the Twins get him for around 15 million per year, they’ve got a good bargain.

Yeah,

it’s tough to say, especially given the brief shelf life for catchers. The fact that Mike Piazza caught for basically 13 years is stunning. The fact that Mauer is only 26 makes him significantly more valuable but he has to stay healthy.

by rugman11 on Oct 31, 2009 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly...

And the thing about Mauer is that he’s probably a better player than Piazza was. They look to be on almost exactly the same career track in terms of hitting production, but Mauer is a hell of a lot better catcher. Mauer is one of the best defensive catchers in the game, while Piazza was really always a defensive liability behind the plate.

Had Piazza not spent all of his career in the NL, honestly he would have probably been a DH. I highly doubt any AL team would have kept him behind the plate.

The thing with Mauer

was that until this season, his offense awesomeness was almost entirely dependent on him being catcher. Yes, he won a couple of batting titles, but his overall numbers (OPS) were only really amazing BECAUSE he was a catcher.

The thing Piazza had was that he was a good enough hitter to still be considered a great hitter even at 1B or DH. Mauer didn’t have that until 2009. Now he’s just ridiculously amazingly awesome.

by rugman11 on Oct 31, 2009 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

But it certainly seems like the prime of his career will see the power production that we saw this year.

My hats off to him, he’s a helluva player. Unless injuries really get him, he’s probably going to be the best catcher we’ve seen in MLB in decades.

And honestly, it doesn’t matter.

I think an Oregon win here actually hurts us.

Yes it knocks USC downs, but Oregon has a legit shot at 11-1 and if Oregon keeps winning, Boise keeps going up too.

Yeah, but...

… honestly Boise is BCS bound anyway, but not making the Title Game.

Some kind of malfunction on ESPN scoreboards

They now show GT ahead of Vandy 56-31 with 7:49 left. I actually saw that scroll across the bottom while watching USC/UT and wondered what in the world could have happened in the last :54 seconds

lol

when GT scored with :54 seconds left, I thought it was in the game. Makes a lot more sense now.

God, Musgerger is as bad as Verne,

He’s trying as hard as he can to give USC the ball on this fumble here.

“When I saw with the naked eye, I thought he was down…but how sure can we be?”

Kurt – (laughing) “Brent, his knee was down, his hip was down, his shoulder was down, his entire body is down and then the ball comes out.”

is running these hot route screens since USC is playing their CBs off the line and the Ducks are eating them alive.
