BlogPoll Calling: Week Five Ballot SUBMITTED
UPDATE: Okay, final ballot submitted. I shuffled around a few teams in the middle of the pack (true, Penn State hasn't really beaten anybody), but everything else is about the same.

Explanations and such:
- UAB gets a Mr. Irrelevant vote after upsetting Southern Miss. Suck it, Doc.
- Stanford makes it's first appearance with a win over UCLA to become the Pac10 leader.
- Auburn gets in, though I honestly think they would have lost that game with a competent QB under center for Tennessee (give up over 400 yards of offense to UT? Good thing they have the bestest everer in the whole country offense....that only put up 26 points against the first defense with a pulse they met). Still, 5-0 is 5-0.
- Wisconsin, USF, and Missouri also get in on the strength of being undefeated while Houston, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Cal, and Georgia all fall out for either having two losses or losing to UTEP, which no self respecting ranked team should do. My love affair with TAMU is also over. We'll always have New Mexico.
- Miami is right back in after defeating Oklahoma. Probably too high, but they've beaten three ranked teams so far, something no one else in the country has done. That win over Virginia Tech is really starting to look good for us.
- Oregon takes the biggest jump of the week after it continues to throttle everyone in it's path and playing like I thought they would in the preseason. That loss ot Boise in week one is looking more and more like a total anamoly.
- The top four stay the same, though I wonder if I should put Florida back at #1 after we struggled against UK? I still think we have the better overall resume, but now that we have a common opponent that Florida performed better against...

Florida
Still hasn’t beaten a team with a winning record, have they? (As of today.) Whereas Bama has that win over a top 10 team. So I’d still feel comfortable having the Tide at #1 over them. However, if Florida goes on the road to LSU and handles them easily, that may have to change, particularly depending on how the Bama-Ole Miss game goes.
Even
if they were undefeated you could still ask that question.

did we really struggle?
Or did kentucky just play well? That td pass against arenas was simply right on the money, for example. Opposing teams sometimes execute well themselves. Leave off the doom and gloom and give KY some credit. And how many teams can score Tds when starting from their own 3 yd line?

That TD pass against Arenas was on the money...
…especially after the receiver pushed Arenas away to create some space.
But yes, Kentucky had a chip on their collective shoulder after their flop against the Gators, and they played like it. If they could have kept from shooting themselves in their collective foot over and over again, we might not have kicked their collective butt like we did.

Of course...
If we had not shot ourselves in the foot with porous offensive playcalling in the first quarter (and afterwards, but that’s when it hurt us most)… we might have kicked their collective butt much more. Eh, who knows.

Or is it just a match-up thing
Last year UF looked much more impressive than us against UK and LSU, but much less impressive against Arkansas and Ole Miss. The other common opponents were about the same.
I kind of lean towards keeping Florida on top until somebody proves that they’re not the best.
thoughts
that logjam at 4-7 is the lols. I watched in person as VT struggled with a terrible duke squad. Then watched the lsu/georgia slap fight on tv later. i mean you have to do something with these guys, and i understand not dropping them until the lose. But I’d be shocked if lsu is in the top ten come January. VT maybe, cause their in the acc. But I’d take a number of lower ranked teams on a neutral filed against all four 4-7 teams.
And, thought it pains me to say it – i think you’ll find you have auburn ranked much lower than most others. World beaters they aren’t, but i think you could make a case for putting them above some of the other one loss teams.
I can confidently say
that there is only one guaranteed W out of the top 25 for the Barn…Mr. Irrelevant, UAB. Wisconsin, USF and Kansas would be even money, and frankly, the barn would lose the rest by a TD+.
I’m still waiting for them to play a team with a pulse. That secondary is horrific. If the BSU, WVU and UT games are any indication, Ryan Mallett may be just the cure for that whole “unbeaten” thing.

… you need to have Auburn higher, probably even a good bit higher.
I know they still haven’t really played a really good team to date, but so what? Look at the remainder of their schedule, they aren’t going to play but about one really good team at all. Arkansas isn’t great, both Ole Miss and LSU have really struggled, and Georgia will have its worst team since 2001. Say what you will, but Auburn is going to have a pretty dang good chance of winning those games, and they’ll also pick up wins over Kentucky and Furman. If you’re waiting on them to finally face a really good team, you’re going to be waiting for the Iron Bowl.
They’re 5-0 right now, and with the way Auburn has played with the way that Arkansas / LSU / Ole Miss / Georgia have played, I think it’s reasonable to assume that they can split those games. If LSU needs miracles to get by MSU and Georgia, Auburn can beat them. Likewise with Ole Miss getting spanked by South Carolina, etc.
I think we get by them, but they beat Kentucky and Furman, and this is a team that ends up with 9 or 10 wins right now.
Again, I know it’s not a popular opinion most likely, but they do deserve to be higher. You cannot just sit around and say "They haven’t played anyone!!!" because while that’s true, the overwhelming majority of the remainder of their schedule has struggled a good bit this year, so they aren’t going to face anyone. I’d at least have them in the top 15.

It's hard to get
a read on the teams like LSU and Georgia, since most of the evidence points to them not being very good, but we’ll have a better idea by the end of the season. Both have so much talent that they’ll be dangerous opponents for anyone they play.
I think Auburn could very easily lose six of their next seven games.
Arkansas, Mississippi, LSU, Kentucky, Georgia, and Alabama are all good enough to beat them.
MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--
BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.
But I'm looking at it like...
…who ahead of them could Auburn beat? None of them at this point. Just because they’ll wind up with a good win total from playing nobody doesn’t mean they are better than the teams ahead of them.

Yeah.
Since when did we start ranking teams based on how we think they’ll do for the rest of the season as opposed to what they’ve done so far?
But what have they done so far?
Nothing…they’ve beaten one unranked team with a winning record.

on the subject of auburn
I wouldnt have auburn anywhere higher than 15th and thats just because they are undefeated. Their schedule has been terribly easy and the defense has been atrocious. Crompton actually looked semi-competent against them and they gave up 30 points to ball state, (0-5). There is also noway tennessee should have 400 yards of offense on a sec defense. Auburn earns a ranking by being undefeated but has to beat someone to earn a higher one.
