How Would You Call It?

I believe the main difference between the Alabama that scored 30+ points per game and the offense we've seen in the last three games is a lack of early aggression. In the first part of the season, we, for the most part, struggled early with the run, which then led us to pass with a good amount of success in the first half, which in turn set up great success with the run against tired defenses in the second half to close out our games. Lately, however, we've become more run-based not just at the end but at the beginning of our games, and we've relied on dump off passes in the passing game. These dump off passes worked extremely well earlier in the year against less competent defenses, but not so much lately. And LSU, for sure, will be prepared for a run-based attack mixed with screens.

I am tired of our games coming down to the fourth quarter. So I propose that we come out aggressive, maybe even hyper-agressive, against LSU right at the beginning in order to put the game away at half time. If I were OC, I would start the game with a deep play-action pass to any of our receivers (maybe even Peek, if he's healthy) out of a run formation. Then, if it fails, I'd have us pass vertically again, and then again on third down. If it succeeds, I'd repeat the process. For the rest of the game, depending on the situation, I would probably continue an aggressive pass-based (but not run-excluding, of course: about 65-35% pass to rush) mentality until we have a 17+ point lead, and then I'd tone it down a lot or a little depending on how late in the game it is. In essence, I'd have us attack LSU the way Utah attacked us last year. So, what do you think? If you were an offensive coordinator, how would you call our game against LSU?

Well our game plans

thus far have resulted in 8-0, so it is hard to find fault.

I think as the competition has gotten harder we have played to our strength which is defense. I suspect we will play it conservative against LSU. I think we believe we can beat a good team by not making mistakes, running Ingram and kicking FGs.

It will be interesting to see if we go away from this style. I also think GMac will only go deep it he gets man coverage. His arm is only average, but he has been smart enough to only throw 3 picks in 8 games which is good. Our plan is take what the other team gives us and recently that has been the little dink pass.

In a way opening it up early sounds like fun but I’m not sure if that will win us the game. SC gave UT two early TD’s on turnovers and never recovered. We will try very hard not to give anything away early. We are at home and we don’t want to take our crowd out of the game with crucial mistakes.

I think our O-line may be able to match their D-line but their DB’s are very athletic. I think the Wildcat will give them some problems too.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

Good ideas...

I think the Wildcat will work, too. And yeah, I agree, my idea is risky, but I have a feeling if we continue the gameplan we’ve had for the past couple weeks it’ll come down to the wire again. I do agree there’s a pretty good chance we would win with our usual (especially after a bye week), but I’d like to see us open it up more with some vertical passes early on so we’ll have a comfortable lead in the fourth quarter. It’s just a matter of evaluating risk vs. benefit. Personally, I trust McElroy to throw the ball away when he needs to, so the risk, to me, is not as high as it would be with a slower-witted quarterback. The real risk is if we can’t find anyone open, and we end up going 3-and-out consistently. Then a lot of the burden will be on the defense to stop LSU. But that’s a risk for the conservative game plan, too, as we saw against Tennessee. As for the rewards of an aggressive plan early in the game: lots of points and a comfortable lead. I don’t know what McElwain will do, but I bet he’ll be a little more aggressive than usual, and that’s fine with me.

Personally...

if I were calling plays I would establish the run game first and get the safties and line backers thinking run first. at which point we should be able to throw it over there heads off of play action. We have not really dominated opponents up front early the way I would like to see it done.

why not start the opening kickoff with an onside...

then bomb it for a hailmary on the first play from scrimmage…???

enjoy...

I've been wanting that to happen again...

ever since we did it vs. TN to open the game in 2007. I think we scored on that drive and TN never recovered.

I was kinda joking, but I'd be geeked if we actually did it...

even if it didn’t work, the cojones to do it would be awesome…

yeah, we settled for a FG

but the tone was set, Saban made an impression, and BAMA never looked back. 41 -17 final. good game.

I was at that game...

and I loved that call, especially against what we thought was a very good offense. That’s the first game that really made me a huge Saban fan.

After the game,

when I saw the replay, I also liked his angry reaction to our team letting Tennessee get a field goal just before half time. He’s an intense obsessed guy, and that’s a perfect fit for Alabama.

so was i. (first and only game @ BDS so far)

my favorite parts were at the end when Saban did the victory lap around the field. we were in the first row near the 30 yard line (could barely see past chavious’ fat ass/stache) and he came right by, he was super pumped up. it was obvious then, that we had a coach who knew the importance of kicking the shit out of tennesee and he was happy to have done so…. the other favorite part was remembering that i brought cigars (honestly, the other folks i was there w/ weren’t as confident we’d get to use them as i was the night before… i was drunk in columbus mississippi how could i of been wrong?) and pullin those bad boys out and lighting up right there in the stadium followed by hugging random strangers for about 30 minutes as we left the stadium…

also the Rammer Jammer was insane, i hadn’t really paid much attention to it before, but once i heard the entire 92,000 chanting it at once, it became my all time favorite song.

welcome to the SEC kiffykins...

Keep in mind, though

Saban & Co. had good reason to call it. One of the Vols’ players had consistently been lining up wrong and played out of position. I’m all for trick plays, but only at the proper time when they attack tendencies the other team has shown. It got the game off to a great start, but that play was as much about outstanding coaching as it was about the element of surprise or good execution.

If it isn't working, fix it

8-0 may be the current result, but our recent offensive strategy will NOT get wins against LSU, Florida or Texas….Even Saban all but called out Bama OC….So status quo must go….Pass the middle of the field, deep outs to Julio, and opening up aggressively is a very good idea….LSU will come out already primed to stop the run, so it will be a, “beat us with pass if you can” mentality for Tigers….Aggressive doesn’t mean careless, but open up with authority and ACT like your an 8-0 team that wants an NC….Also, unless were losing, play TRichardson more in the 3rd quarter so that LSU defense is tired when Ingram starts running wild in the 4th….We are Bama and we won’t play scared or passively!!!!
