LSU fan here...
Well the game is almost here...y'all had the bye week to heal...we had the...well a bye week to heal...
I have been reading RBR (seems to be one of the better Bama sites) the past week and decided to post what I believe to be an objective view of the game from a LSU fan's perspective.
Warning...kinda long...
Concerns for LSU
- Saban's combo coverages...CNS likes to use coverages with great mix of zone/man. These are more complex and take a while for Defs to learn. Well, Bama's def has learned them well. LSU has a young and realtively inexperienced QB, while he possess a great deal of talent is still only 19 yrs old. These coverages are tough for young QBs to read, not to mention that CNS does a tremendous job of disguising his coverages.
- Hands on Hips LSU Def...I feel that LSU def matches up very well with the Bama off, BUT if the LSU off struggles early and the TIDE continue to pound out long drives this Def will be exhausted by the 4th. This is my biggest concern. Quick three-n-outs by LSU's off and a Bama time consuming, flat out exhausting drives.
- Conservative Off...LSU has only recently begin to open up the off. I have a feeling that this could be a game where Miles decides to regress the off (^^cough^^ Florida ^^cough^^) to minimize mistakes by playing a very vanilla off. These plays right into the strengths of a nasty Bama def and also leads to Hands on Hips LSU Def...yikes.
Opportunities for LSU
- Stretch the field...I wholly believe that when LSU spreads the off out that it can become very explosive. (Tolliver/Lafell at WR, Scott/Keiland at RB, Holliday/Shepard Utility) These are some serious weapons to have on offense, and when JJ can push the ball vertically and horizontally with these guys, points can come quickly.
- The learning curve...LSU looked flat out bad on both sides of the ball early this year. This needs to be factored in with a completely new Def system and a VERY young QB. It seems that both sides of the ball are starting to really get a grasp of their assignments and potential. We all know they have the talent, but how long would it take for everything to come together...its almost there.
- Patrick Peterson...If there is ONE player who can man up with Julio, it's this guy. You know it..I know it...we both can't wait for this battle. If LSU can take away Jones then the focus really can be on stopping the run.
Should be a great game, unfortunately CBS is covering the game, so the over/under on tebow's name will be set at 435. Holliday as the fastest man, 265. Terrance Cody being very large and capable of blocking FGs, 5,000.
FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Great post.
LSU’s talent at the skill positions is undeniable. But I think’s Bama’s advantage in the trenches is what will win this game. Based on how poorly LSU has run the ball and protected the QB, it’s likely that the combination of Cody, Dareus, Washington, and Deaderick will be the difference.
And you’re right about Peterson, dude can play. If McElroy keeps forcing it into Julio, the offense will continue to stagnate. He has to get back to distributing the ball to Maze, Hanks, McCoy, and (hopefully he plays) Peek.
Regarding Danielson and Lundquist, don’t forget that McElroy hasn’t lost a game as a starting QB or that Nick Saban used to coach at LSU!

Nick Saban used to coach at LSU
Haha, yeah, Danielson and Lundquist will make sure that all the viewers are aware. The majority of LSU fans are over with the whole “Saban” thing. I never really understood it, the guy lied to Dolphin fans not LSU. Unfortunately, the media anda minority of LSU fans think he killed all the first borns in Louisiana.
The truth is…Saban is one of the best def coaches in football. Before Saban, Dinardo starting building up a wall around Louisiana for recruiting, unfortunately he couldn’t beat medicore teams. Saban came in and put the last few bricks in place. Also, he came in at a time when TAF (tiger athletic fund) really kicked in to overdrive with the facilities/support that Dinardo generated.
LSU helped Saban just as much as he did the program. The media and those outside the program give Saban way too much credit for the progam. Just as most coaches get too much blame for a struggling program. The atheltic dept’s dedication is just as important as a HC, this is often overlooked.

I am glad to hear that the Saban hatred is not universal.
It doesn’t really matter, except it adds a new wrinkle to the game, I just never understood that. Had he left LSU for Bama I’d get it. When he left the Dolphins though his job at LSU was taken. I often wondered what LSU fans wanted him to do, go tell Les Miles to get out of his seat? It is always the disgruntled though that make the most noise.

LifelongBammer you nailed it...
There was shock among all the LSU fanbase at first, but the majority of fans were over with it before Saban even coached his first Bama game. The “hatred of Saban” is mostly Media and message board driven, as sad as that is.

When has McElroy forced the ball into Julio?
He hasn’t been doing that this year at all!

funny thing is..
Julio was open on both those passes. 1st one he dropped…2nd was a terrible pass/ miscommunication between McElroy and Julio.

They've been double and triple teamed Julio all season...
This just gives Maze, Hanks and hopefully Peek a chance to make an impact.
My concern is that Sheppard will shake and bake enough not to break the big one, but keep the offense on the field.
Got that winning feelin'

Decent write-up, but if you think Julio is our only receiving threat, I think you ought to go take a look at his numbers so far this season.
I'm wrong all the time.
by PeteHoliday on Nov 2, 2009 9:40 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I didn’t mean to imply that Julio is your only receiving threat. It appears that opposing teams are using stack coverages and double/triple teaming Julio. Thus, his numbers are way down. My point was that with Peterson LSU may not have to use so much of its def resources on one player. This would help contain the run.
Who is Bama’s other receiving threat that LSU should be worried about? Why hasn’t this threat pulled coverage away from Julio?
by schexyoung on Nov 2, 2009 10:09 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Julio is the biggest receiving threat we have. But he’s not even close to the only receiving threat we have. Maze, Peek, Ingram, and even Hanks at times have done a great job of getting open and getting the ball. Clearly the last few weeks have not been very kind to our passing offense, but that has very little to do with shutting down Julio and almost everything to do with GMac going through his reads too quickly.
If we get early season GMac back, you’re going to need to shut down a lot more than just Julio before you can say that the only concern left is the running game.
I'm wrong all the time.
by PeteHoliday on Nov 2, 2009 10:40 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
ON the subject of Receiving threat...
It’s just as much about the QB geting him the ball as it is the WR getting open. Between Maze, Peek, Alexander, and Hanks we have enough talent to open things up for Julio. The problem is our QB’s can’t seem to go through their progression and find the open receiver.

I hope the LSU coaches put Peterson 1 on 1 with Julio...
I don’t mean to sound arrogant or cocky, and I understand Peterson is a great player but I don’t think there’s any one guy in college football that can shut Julio down. I know you said if but I think that’s a very big IF. It may just be because I’m biased but I just don’t think Peterson can do it all game long by himself. McElroy needs to take a deep breath slow down and take his time. As someone mentioned earlier he is blowing through his reads entirely too quick! I have a feeling Bama will come back fired up and ready to play…This offense has a lot to prove and I believe they get it done this Saturday. Should be a good game though…Roll Tide!!!!

The #1 reason why you don’t leave a DB 1-on-1 with Julio is this: If he catches the ball, the DB is probably going to need help to bring him down. Maybe not every time, but if Julio gets a little separation underneath and the ball is well thrown, you’re expecting a cover guy to make an open-field tackle on someone who runs like a tailback.
By all means, please cover Julio 1-on-1. In fact, don’t even bother with safety help. Please.

The WILDCAT
Bama fans…I have tried to watch as much of your games as possible, but can’t see every snap. How often is the WildElephant used? Is it mostly Ingram running it? How effective has it been?
by schexyoung on Nov 2, 2009 1:24 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
When McElroy has struggled,
Saban has employed the wildcat to put the ball in Ingram’s hands…it has been effective in those cases, especially since we threw one pass out of it in the Ark game, that’s kept the defenses honest in subsequent games

we used it 5 plays in a row on our final TD drive. The gamecocks knew it was coming, and still could not stop Ingram

check the highlights from the ark game on youtube
and you’ll see the pass to julio, ark’s secondary were cheating up close and no one noticed when julio ran right by them, funny enough, Ole Miss tried the exact same play on Ark the next week and hodge made it to the 1 yd line
