The Mississippi State Open Thread

A bit of a late start this week, but nevertheless let's get things kicked off with the Mississippi State open thread. Here goes a few thoughts on the Bullies:

  • Alabama opened this game at around a 14-point favorite, but that line has now fallen to around 12 points. The last over / under I saw was around 44, so a 28-14 type game is expected from the boys in Vegas.
  • Is MSU one of the most underrated teams around? I think so. They have already gotten four wins, and while they won't likely make a bowl game, that has more to do with a incredibly difficult schedule than anything else. Drawing Georgia Tech (likely ACC champion) and Houston (likely C-USA champion) on the OOC schedule was terrible enough, but then you also get 'Bama, Florida, and LSU? That's just brutal. Based on how they have played, though, MSU would probably make a bowl game this year if they were lucky enough to have a schedule like Ole Miss or Kentucky has. And it should be pointed out that MSU actually beat Kentucky in Lexington, and that they may very well upset Ole Miss in Starkvegas if Colonel Reb doesn't start playing better.
  • And speaking of that murderer's row of a schedule, MSU has fought hard and kept things close. Florida only beat them by 10, and LSU needed a couple of miracles to escape Starkvegas with the victory. Houston won by only 7, and Georgia Tech had to fight to the very end, too. Combined, those teams have roughly a 33-4 record, and MSU has kept it close in each game. With that in mind, I wouldn't really expect a blowout here.
  • Tyson Lee is a decent spread option quarterback and has played pretty well. He's far from an elite athlete, but he does have decent enough mobility to be a running threat, and he has thrown the ball relatively well (60% completion percentage). The biggest problem with him -- and MSU in general offensively -- has been turnovers.
  • Anthony Dixon is probably one of the top two or three tailbacks in the SEC, even though he doesn't get the credit. He was a highly-touted recruit out of Jackson who could have basically gone anywhere, and it's been a lack of publicity hurting him more than anything else. He's already ran for over 1,000 yards this year, and he's the best power runner we'll face all year (Hardesty, Scott, and Tate included). Together with Christian Ducre they have a dang good 1-2 punch at tailback.
  • Wide receiver is a big issue for MSU. Chad Bumphis is probably their best player, many calling him a poor man's Percy Harvin. He's a good athlete that Saban himself recruited very hard, but any time a true freshman is easily your most productive receiver, that's bad news.
  • The MSU offensive line has been better than expected. It hasn't been great by any stretch, but not the trainwreck that many expected.
  • MSU spreads the field a good bit, and it's interesting as to what they do. They like to spread you out, but they mix in a tough power running game from Dixon. That forces a defense to make some tough choices in terms of what kind of personnel package they use to attack MSU. Do you try to stop a power running game with extra defensive backs so you can cover the spread, or do you load the box with linebackers and hope your skill guys can get it done in isolation?
  • Defensively, MSU hasn't stopped the run particularly well this year. Hopefully 'Bama takes advantage of that and gets a big day from both Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson.
  • The strength of MSU defensively comes at linebacker, and it's a good unit. Jamar Cheney at middle linebacker is probably the best defensive player you've never heard of, and K.J. Wright is a really good athlete alongside him. Chris White plays the weakside, and he's a good player too.
  • The MSU defensive backfield is really a rebuild this year with a lot of new faces. I'm not going to go out and say that they are a bad group because they are 37th in pass efficiency defense (not bad really) and they have improved over the course of the year. However, the past five SEC games against Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee, and LSU have all seen the Tide face really good secondaries, and admittedly this one is a fairly big step down. This will be the weakest group of DB's we have seen since Arkansas left town.
  • MSU is dead last in the SEC in net punting, and something like 115th in the country in net punting. We need to take advantage of that and make them pay for it in the punt return game. After getting only one net return yard on eight punts against ROBO-PUNTER LSU, it'd be nice to see Arenas have another big game.
  • All in all, MSU isn't a bad team, and coming off a bye week will certainly help them. They've played a lot of good teams this year and have held their own each and every time, so a blowout shouldn't be expected. We've always played poorly in Starkvegas, and that might not change this year. Hopefully, though, we'll play well enough to avoid any major problems. This one could be a relatively close game, but we're clearly the better team and we're going to have to really shoot ourselves in the foot to give the Bullies a legitimate chance to get the victory.
  • I wonder if they'll have another cropduster flyover this year like they did on John Parker Wilson Day in 2007?

This is a weird rivalry is some ways

Alabama is viewed as State’s 2nd biggest rival for many in Starkville, yet might rank 6th out of 6 for Alabama in regards to the SEC West.

Ahhh, the cropduster

I remember that day. What a horrible fucking day. I wanted to jump off the top of the upper-deck when I saw that pass floated into the endzone at the end of the first half. The flyover was awful, that town sucks, those cowbells suck, and the whole state of Mississippi sucks.

I, for one, am nervous...

but then again, I’m always nervous when we take the field. I have faith that the Tide will pull off the win, but it seems to me that State always plays us tough. Like OTS said, their schedule is pretty brutal…I feel like this team in almost any other conference (barring the Big 12) would be doing really well.

This is not going

to be a blowout type game. I hate it but MSU is better than last year and if they can keep Mullen they may be a thorn in our side for years to come. They will likely be more “up” for this game than Bama. I mean to them this game is huge.

By the way, did Mullen say “We are going to beat Alabama”?

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

by 5026 on Nov 11, 2009 9:56 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Agreed....

This game makes me nervous, because if Bama takes them lightly, and we have a hangover from the lsu win, we could be in for a long day. On paper we should win going away, but the bullies have ALWAYS played hard and I think this could be their bowl game in the msu mindset.

I heard that too

Did Mullen actually say he promised a win? I know he said he knew how to beat us bc he did last year with UF, but I have read elsewhere he said MSU would win this weekend.

I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . . DBT

by I hate UT on Nov 11, 2009 11:11 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

he knows how to beat us?

because of what UF did offensively last year? You mean he has his QB being allowed 10 seconds to throw and even then throws lasers with deadly accuracy? I sure hope not.

I found this quote from one of Gentry's articles...

“We have three games left,” Mullen said, “and every one of them is critical. Our approach going in this one is to find a way to win this game to put us one step closer to our goal of getting bowl eligible.”

I am concerned

but I think we will pull it out. Mullen is a good coach and his success at FL has paid off. I think that he knows our defense really well and they won’t be intimidated i.e the florida game this year. So I expect our offense to continue to get better with a few mistakes here and there, but our defense will be spread out again this week so we have to make sure we tackle, tackle, tackle. I can’t remember how many times last week against LSU we didn’t tackle correctly. If we can be productive on offense and get it in the hands of Julio and block for Ingram, it will be a long day for MSU but if we struggle on offense and they play us tight on defense like they did FL then it will be close. I expect Bama to win by 14. RTR

I'd like to see

Another “perfect” punt return for a TD by Javy. Get him past that “tied” designation for most in the SEC

by Go Hide in the V-berth on Nov 11, 2009 11:48 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I'd love to see Javy have another big day, too.

You can see how hard he plays and you like to see a guy like that succeed. That attitude is seen in so many of our players that I think that this is such a fun team to watch.
They occasionally make a bone-headed mistake, but you see that person and everyone around him stepping up.
Most teams we’ve played, you’ve seen most of them give up in the 3rd or 4th quarter—-possibly just poorly conditioned.
This team is showing great mental and physical toughness.
I go so far as to say that most of their mistakes have been about a lack of experience and momentary lapses of focus. That’s great!

I have been

nurvous about this game all season. I don’t know what it is but for some reason im not feeling too confident.

I actually called MSU upsetting UF and if it weren’t for the terrible call late in the game, they almost do.

Im just hoping we come out loose and ready to play. Now that we know for sure our destination is the SECCG, we should feel more comforatable with openning things up. On the flip side, i hope we don’t act like our shit don’t stink..cuase these boys have the ability to beat us..

One more thing, the final score of last years game was no where close to how the game was really played…um thank you Javy…

by bammer on Nov 11, 2009 12:51 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Two things that I think are important.......

……..one, is that the players focus solely on MSU. One downside of wrapping up the West so soon is that the players might start thinking about the SECCG and that would be a mistake. However, I think Saban is the master of getting players to stay focused. The second is if McElroy can settle down just a little more, he could have a big game. He played pretty well against LSU but at the same time he missed three wide-open receivers that should have been easy touchdowns. The LSU score could have been a 45-15 blowout. Roll Tide!

I too am a little worried

about this game. Just looking at the way MSU has played this year and wrapping a spot in ATL vs UF early, this could be a “trap” game.

Personally I'd like to see

us kick off first and then get a turnover to set the tone.

But, we will try to pass early and often against what we think to be a weaker secondary that we have faced the last few weeks.

Just don’t turn it over Greg.

Invocation

Oh, Benevolent Football Fathers,
reward our valor with many victories!
We swear our allegiance to thee
Give us the Smash of the Bulldogs
and their miniscule quarterback,
Humble the Mullen, and listen to
our prayers, for new shit
has come to light and we’ve
adapted a steady drug regimen
to limber our minds and serve thee.
I’ve had a rough night and I hate the
F’ing Bulldogs, man.

Bless us
