Men's basketball unimpressive in exhibition win
Turnovers plague Crimson Tide in close win over Augusta State
The Tide won, 61-55, against a Division II opponent. JaMychal Green was the only Bama player in double figures with 12, and also led the team in rebounds with five (tied with Chris Hines and Senario Hillman). Augusta State led by eight points in the first half, and Alabama was never really able to shake them (the lead never got above 12).
There were some extenuating circumstances. While Augusta rode their best players (getting all but twelve minutes from their top six) Alabama coach Anthony Grant was more interested in exploring his bench. Green played only nineteen minutes and point guard Mikhail Torrance (who had seven assists along with four of those turnovers) only played 25.
The starting lineup was the same as in the first exhibition game, Green and Hines in the frontcourt with Hillman, Torrance, and Anthony Brock on the perimeter. Justin Knox would seem to be in a sixth man role, then, though he actually played the most minutes last night, 28.
Next up, a little school, maybe you've heard of it, called Cornell. They're the defending Ivy League champs and preseason favorite, and if the Crimson Tide doesn't play better, the Big Red will win.

Were going to have to step it up
Cornell is a very good team and it would not be good to start off the year with a loss. Maybe this game was a wake up call though. That’s what I’m hoping atleast.
36-0
The coach
wasn’t happy at all with our boys last night. His comments were pretty rough. Almost Sabanesque…

Cornell is for real !!!!
Most people who know the game of basketball have said Cornell will make the tourney this year. Not only make it but go to the sweet 16. A really tough game for Grant and his players to open up with. A loss here could really hurt the enthusiasm of the bandwagon fans Tide hoops have been plagued with thanks to former coach MG. IMO
Get ’em fired up coach we need this game in the W collumn.

Nice...
I was googling for a good Andy Bernard picture earlier, preferably one of him in some Cornell gear, but couldn’t find it. The Nard Dawg think Bama’s gonna get HOUSED. Remember, Andy Bernard doesn’t lose competitions. He wins them or quits them because they’re unfair.

What bothered me the most
were the turnovers and the bad shots. With about two minutes left and a 10 point lead (I believe) we were forcing our way to the basket and shooting hopeless shots, only to not get the rebound and give the ball back. Granted, we didn’t get a whole lot of outside looks, but there was still clearly room for improvement.
I think Coach Grant is absolutely right that the guys don’t fully understand the system yet, and there some growing pains. He wants to score points on breakaways, and we didn’t do that. He emphasizes ball control and we didn’t do that. He wants tenacious, aggressive defense and we didn’t always show that. I certainly think CG is the man for the job, but it is clear that this year is an adjustment year. The potential is there, but it’ll take time.
But hey, at least Augusta St can’t blame the officiating for the loss!
