Record Logjam in the BCS Standings
Looking at Week 12's BCS Standings I was surprised to see no less than 6 teams able to tout an undefeated record. I thought this can't be common so I took a look back at previous Week 12 standings since '02.
Here's what I found:
| Year | Undefeateds | Teams (Rank) |
|---|---|---|
| 2009 | 6 | Florida (1), Alabama (2), Texas (3), TCU (4), Cincinnati (5), Boise State (6) |
| 2008 | 5 | Alabama (1), Texas Tech (2), Utah (7), Boise State (9), Ball State (14) |
| 2007 | 2 | Kansas (3), Hawaii (16) |
| 2006 | 4 | Ohio State (1), Michigan (2), Rutgers (7), Boise State (13) |
| 2005 | 2 | USC (1), Texas (2) |
| 2004 | 5 | USC (1), Oklahoma (2), Barners (2), Utah (5), Boise State (13) |
| 2003 | 2 | Oklahoma (1), TCU (10) |
| 2002 | 2 | Miami (1), Ohio State (2) |
The likely expectation here is that 4 of this season's undefeated teams will remain undefeated right up until the 'bowl selection' week of the BCS. Such a jam would match only 2004's Auburn and Utah getting left at the alter.
Boise State has been undefeated at this point 4 of the last 8 seasons - but this year marks their highest BSC ranking save for the rankings after the win over Oklahoma in '04. Even so, they're not even sniffing distance from the BSC title invite, what do the Broncos do? If they had beaten Oregon last week instead of the beginning of the season what would that mean for their ranking?
RTR beat the Mocs!

I'll tell you what the Broncos can do
play some stiff competition! How do you think LSU would do against their schedule? And they are the 3rd best team in the SEC! Or, how do you think the Broncos would do against Florida, VA Tech, LSU, etc? Any school can schedule a bunch of patsies and one hard opponent, go undefeated, and wail about the unfairness of not getting a higher ranking. If Boise State wins anything this year, then the model will be set and no school in their right minds will ever set up their schedule so there is any chance to play team which can actually beat them again!

I think i read something about the broncos trying to schedule tougher opponents here
and it might have been, pete, OTS, and kleph… maybe all of them saying that no one will schedule them… because there is nothing in it for the tougher opponent. the broncos even are offering away, away games in a series.
so easy... even an Auburn fan can do it!
Doubt it
there’s a big interest in beating good teams right now, so good teams are scheduled (see Alabama’s Non Conference opps this year and last). If Ole Miss, say, wanted to make a splash on the national scene, they could schedule a team like Boise, and if they won, gain instant credibility (at least this year). No, I don’t see it.

There was a huge article on...
…Yahoo/Rivals about a week ago talking about Boise having difficulty scheduling good opponents. Here’s one from ESPN talking about their difficulties.
Oddly enough, it mentions in that article that we’re paying San Jose State 1,000,000 for the season opener next year. My how times change, we only paid Hawai’i 600,000 in 2006 and they’re way better than SJS.
Seems the hold up
is not so much that other schools don’t want to play Boise, but that they don’t want to pay Boise the $$$ Boise is asking. As I said, if they really wanted to play a tougher opponent, they could. I don’t expect that Alabama is asking Va Tech $1.3 MM to play, are they?

That figure...
…wasn’t mentioned in the original article I read (which I can’t find.) As more light is shed on the matter, it’s certainly understandable.
Also, about SJS
my understanding from the article is the worse the teams are, the more $$ you pay for them to come in, as they are almost certain wins. Weird how that economy works, but you can see the thinking of it. If you’re going to pay a lot of $$, why schudule a team which might actually beat you? Instead, part of the compensation the better team gets is the national recognition they get if they actually beat you. Hawai’i had a much better chance of this, so we paid them less.

I was at that Hawaii game...
…and Colt Brennan got the Warriors close, but he ran out of time in John Parker Wilson’s first collegiate start. It was an awesome atmosphere with the unveiling of the last BDS expansion and the Walkway of Champions.
You had me at "ROLL TIDE"!!!
Screw Boise.....
I know this is my lowly opinion here but that blue field Boise plays on is a huge distraction to opponents. Don’t you think? Heck how do you prepare for that? And then to make it worse Boise wears a uniform that looks like it was made from the scrap materials left over from building the darn field. You can’t see the fuckers. It’s like that movie “The Predator” you know, the alien’s camo gig. Hell I can’t even watch Boise play on TV. It makes my head hurt like I took too many pain meds. Then when Boise plays an away game it’s like a freaking holliday to their players. There like hell ya! now we can play some football now that we are off that damn blue field. Its a clear advantage and should be illegal if you ask me. Really WTF? have any of you ever seen any blue grass? (Kentucky jokes aside)
Your temper brings dishonor to my happy mooshu palace.
I totally agree.
Home field advantage is one thing but the Blue Field to me would be like a BBall team with really long range outside shooters pulling the 3 pt. line back to NBA distance where their guys can hit it and others can’t. You could say we all play on the same court, but that isn’t really true, because your court is totally different from every other court we play on.
Don’t tell me the people who made the blue field and matching jersey were not thinking it would give them a “hidden” advantage. I wish NCAA would step in.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
I have been saying this for several years too
The blue field should be illegal. It is a clear advantage. I never watch a game at Boise on tv because of that damn field.
I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . . DBT
