The Tennessee-Chattanooga Open Thread

We're definitely going to have some stuff up later in the week about Auburn and Florida because a win here is all but assured, but nevertheless a few quick hitters on UT-Chattanooga:

  • Historically, believe it or not this, is actually the eleventh meeting between these schools in a series that goes back to 1908. The Tide is, not surprisingly, 10-0 all-time five shutouts on the resume. The average margin of victory has been somewhere between 30-40 points, and only once has this game been decided by fewer than 10 points.
  • Tennessee-Chattanooga used to be the Moccasins. However, the politically correct crowd got to that one as being offensive, so now they are just the "Mocs." Their mascot has since become a mockingbird, and the logo has the mockingbird driving a train. I don't get it.
  • Random fact: Former Alabama standout player / defensive coordinator turned traitor Bill "Brother" Oliver was head coach at UT-Chattanooga from 1980-1983. He actually did well there, but ultimately left at the end of the 1983 season to be the defensive coordinator for the Memphis Showboats of the USFL.
  • Tennessee-Chattanooga has struggled a lot the past several few decades. They had their glory years in the late 1970's and early 1980's, but the program has really fallen on hard times since. Since 1984, the most wins the Mocs have notched in a season is a mere seven (something they've done only twice), and they've had 18 losing seasons in that stretch.
  • The Mocs have a new coach in 2009. After winning a combined three games in 2007 and 2008, Rodney Allison was fired. In his place, Russ Huesman was hired after spending several years as defensive coordinator for the Richmond Spiders. Most interesting fact about Huesman? He played prep football at Moeller High School for former Notre Dame coach Gerry Faust.
  • This one is driving me nuts... Huesman was the recruiting coordinator at Memphis (along with other assistant duties) from 1998-2003. I can't piece it together off the top of my head, but it seems like I remember his name coming up somehow or another in the Means scandal. Of course, everybody's name came up then, so maybe I'm just not thinking straight.
  • Either way, Huesman has done a very good job at Tennessee-Chattanooga this year. They have had their lumps, but they come into this game at 6-4, and should finish 6-5 (this is their last regular season game). That end result alone makes this one of the most successful seasons that Tennessee-Chattanooga has had since their glory days in the late 1970's / early 1980's.
  • B.J. Coleman is the starting quarterback for the Mocs, and he is the best of the bunch. 'Bama fans should remember this guy well... he spent the last few years at Tennessee-ArmedRobbery and his transfer this past Spring created a bit of a stink in Knoxville. He has done a good job for the Mocs this year, completing around 60% of his passes and throwing 17 touchdowns against only 7 interceptions.
  • UT-Chattanooga throws the football a lot. Just looking at the raw numbers they are throwing the football about 60% of the time, so they are probably the pass happiest team we'll face this year.
  • Reason for that is probably because UT-Chattanooga cannot run the football at all. Their leading rusher this year has around 150 carries on the year, but is barely averaging 3.0 yards per carry.
  • Lots of dink and dunk in the passing game out of this offense... the top three receivers combine to average about 10 yards per reception. As a whole, Coleman is only averaging 10.5 yards per completion on the year.
  • Leading receiver is Blue Cooper who has over 80 catches on the year. That many catches is impressive regardless of who you are playing for.
  • Run defense... UTC doesn't have much of one. We ought to run it often and easy against these guys.
  • If nothing else, you've got to give this university a nod for having one hell of a random alumni base. Notable alums of Tennessee-Chattanooga include Terrell Owens, Ward Cleaver (Leave it to Beaver), Mr. Belding (Saved by the Bell), and the guy who invented Rolaids. I suppose that between the girl and I -- she's a lifelong Saved by the Bell junkie, and I can go through a Sam's Club size case of Rolaids during the course of a football season -- we actually owe a lot to this university.

Agreed...

..mocassins are one of the coolest snakes around. I would especially like it if there were a team named the Mambas (green or black). Bulldogs (and Tigers) are the lamest of the mascots. They require no thought. Which is why my favorite team name is the Crimson Tide. Nothing’s awesomer.

by crimsontsunami on Nov 17, 2009 4:57 PM CST up reply actions

From wikipedia

The school’s athletic teams are called the Mocs. The teams were nicknamed Moccasins until 1996. (The origin of the name is uncertain; however, Moccasin Bend is a large horseshoe-shaped bend in the Tennessee River directly below Lookout Mountain.)

The mascot has taken on four distinct forms, with a water moccasin being the mascot in the 1920s, and then a moccasin shoe (known as “The Shoe”) was actually used as the school’s mascot at times in the 1960s and 1970s. From the 1970s until 1996, the mascot was Chief Moccanooga, an exaggerated Cherokee tribesman.

In 1996, due to concerns over ethnic sensitivity,6 the Moccasins name and image were dropped in favor of the shortened “Mocs” and an anthropomorphized mockingbird named “Scrappy” dressed as a railroad engineer. The school’s main athletic logo features Scrappy riding a train (a reference to Chattanooga’s history as a major railroad hub and to the song “Chattanooga Choo Choo”). The mascot takes its name from former football coach A.C. “Scrappy” Moore.

by 12NationalChampionships on Nov 17, 2009 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

As a Chattanooga native,

I doubt Moccasin Bend had anything to do with the name, and if it did, they’d have changed it long ago – that happens to be where the mental hospital is located there, and when Moccasin Bend is referenced, it’s almost always in connection with the facility.

frank thomas coached at the then university of chattanooga from 1925 until 1929 earning a 26-9-2 record. most of those losses came his first year as he only had three losses after that inaugural season.

he left chattanooga in 1929 to take an assistant coaching job at georgia (the same position he had held prior to going to tennessee). the next year he arrived in alabama as the coach-in-waiting for the outgoing wallace wade.

sounds like a close cousin of “The Cleveland Steamer” or dare I say it “The Alabama Hot Pocket” I think I stumbled on a page that featured that off a link from rotten.com . The Year was 1999 and I was killing time in the Shelton State library. Just watched a video of a monkey sticking his finger in his but smelling it and falling off his tree branch. I then went and made a big mistake, never click on a link that is all question marks. This my sound obvious now but remember this is 1999. Anyway all the sudden this image pops on the screen and I was horrified. In this state I was unable to close the window fast enough, I mean people were walking but and my motor skills had left me because of the shock. I have never gone back to that page it still haunts my dreams. So your right The Chattanooga Cream pies is just wrong.

Thank you Seniors
It’s Senior Day, and 19 Bama players will be making their final home appearance:

Eryk Anders, Javier Arenas, Terrence Cody, Drew Davis, Brandon Deaderick, P.J. Fitzgerald, Baron Huber, Marquis Johnson, Mike Johnson, Tyrone King, Mike McCoy, Colin Peek, Cory Reamer, Chris Rogers, Ali Sharrief, Leigh Tiffin, Roy Upchurch, Lorenzo Washington, and Justin Woodall

It’s also my guess that Rolando McClain will be playing his final home game, and possible that Kareem Jackson will, as well.

I expect to see huge ovations, especially, for Marquis Johnson and Leigh Tiffin. These are two guys that have taken a lot of crap from Bama fans over the last four seasons, and they have become absolutely vital parts of Alabama’s championship run. I still get mad when I think about Bama fans actually booing Chris Capps during Senior Day two years ago. Let’s make up for that by letting all of these guys, but especially the two who have been derided during their careers, know how much they mean to the Alabama family.
