MBB: Alabama 86, Jackson State 69
Newcomers help Grant claim first Alabama win
Behind 23 points in 24 minutes off the bench by freshman Tony Mitchell, the Alabama men's basketball team evened their record at 1-1 last night, securing Anthony Grant's first win as Alabama head coach. The Tide only led by five at the break, but pulled away in the second half thanks to Mitchell and fellow newcomer Charvez Davis. Davis, a JUCO transfer, had 16 points in only 19 minutes, also off the bench. JaMychal Green and Mikhail Torrance chipped in with thirteen apiece, and Torrance added eight assists.
Anthony Brock, who started the opener, has been suspended indefinitely from "all basketball activities" for a violation of team rules. Torrance, who was going to play in crunch time anyway, started in his place.
The Tide was outrebounded, 42-32. Unusually for a SWAC team, JSU had a decided height advantage, starting a 6-10 center and three other players 6-6 or taller. Alabama countered much of the night with a small lineup with only one inside player and the 6-6 Mitchell playing power forward. Grant Maxey, the preseason SWAC player of the year, played only three minutes for JSU...
The Tide did much better defending (4-14) and shooting (7-17) the three than in the opener. The biggest problem, other than the rebounds, was foul shooting, as they hit only 19-32 (59%).

I don't know
They announced it during the radio broadcast, I’m sure, but I was in class during the first half.

Thats one thing I always hated about BBall games. There never seems to be any...
regard for students when it came to Tip Off Time. My freshmen year(1989) it seemed like I was always in class during BBall games. Really sucked

I really hope we have a respectable record this year. It would be nice to win at least 20 games for a change.

Ugh.
Still can’t hit foul shots. Unacceptable.

I already see a pattern here only 2-games into the season.
Bama is on the short side with our starting power forward at 6’6’’. Against Cornell if Bama could have gained position under the boards and rebounded a few missed shots our chances to win especially in the final thee minutes would have been much greater. We are lacking pure shooters. The three point percentages are low and the free throws being missed is a recipe for a loss. But the good news is shooting percentages can be fixed. We have a good coach who will demand focus and hard practice. Grant is going to recruit some height. All the problems are fixable. Grant will gain execution as the season progresses. Roll Tide forever!!!!!!

Justin Knox actually started at power forward
But for much of the game, the only big man was either Green or Knox. Of the three tallest players on the team, Green played 22 minutes (and had four fouls), Knox only played 15 (and had three) and Chris Hines (really more of a three, but he’s 6-8) played 19 (and had three). Knox and Hines combined for eight points and four rebounds.
Gottfried’s best teams tended to play a lot of small lineups too, but they got a lot of production from that one big man. There’s a lot of pressure on Green — if he doesn’t hit double digits in rebounds, we’re in trouble.

My take...
…is to have low expectations this season in terms of wins and losses, and instead to focus on the…process…that Coach Grant is leading the program through to become a winning program. My guess is that we will not see great improvement this year in the number of wins, but that we will continue to see improvement in the way we perform. As new players arrive who better fit the system, we will have more reason for higher expectations per the win column.
