LSU Fan Seeking Tailgate Advice
This site appears to be the best of the Bama message boards, and I come here seeking advice. We made the road trip in '07 and tailgated near the back of the quad, used a generator, satellite, 20'x20' tent, didn't have to pay anything.
After looking through the UA gameday website for all of the new tailgate areas and restrictions, I have a few questions.
1. The website says that no gas powered generators are allowed in the "Quad Zone", and the "Quad Zone" on the map appears to be half of campus. Is this "no generator" thing enforced? We have a silent Honda 200w generator that makes very little noise.
2. The site makes it sound like there are no free spots to tailgate in the actual Quad. What is the deal with this? Could I go out Friday evening and setup a 20'x20' (after getting approval of course) and be fine?
3. We parked our trailer in a lot near capstone drive in '07. Are these spots still free?
4. We have a sound system and enjoy playing music at a decent level. Are they strict about volume of music on campus?
5. Are there any rules against kegs?
6. Open container laws?
Basically, we have put together a bus trip of 50 LSU fans (Expecting about 100 to be at the actual tailgate), and we would like to setup a 20'x20' tent somewhere on campus that is accessible by commercial bus until 10 am on gameday. We would hope to be able to use our generator so that the people without tickets would be able to watch the game at the tailgate. We don't need to worry about rules for grilling because we are having it catered. Any advice on the best place to setup would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Based on my limited personal knowledge...
1. I really can’t be sure about the generators thing, but I do know that TVs and radios are set up at just about every other tent. Either they’re using university power or a generator. Since the generators are outlawed, it must be the light-pole power. You might just have to get there early enough to secure a plug, but I’m not certain.
2. I think the Quad opens at 6pm Friday for setting up. Assuming you have the permit (see uagameday.com), you should be fine. Spots are first-come, first-served, except for the special reserved spots.
3. No clue on parking really other than the maps on the Gameday website. I walk.
4. As long as you’re not bothering other tailgaters with whatever songs you LSU fans play, you shouldn’t have to worry about it. Just have “Sweet Home Alabama” on tap in case someone starts getting pissy.
5. Come to think of it, I don’t usually see kegs on the quad. I’d wait for advice from others before bringing one.
6. There are open container laws, but the rules go out the window on gameday. A word to the wise would be to use a coozy, but as long as you’re not being belligerent (I know that might be hard for LSU fans), you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
7. If you do get a keg, I’d suggest Bruno’s. It’s on McFarland (Hwy 82), next to the University Mall, across the street from the new Midtown shopping center.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your stay in Tuscaloosa… as much as you can when your team loses, that is. Roll Tide!
About Kegs
I maybe wrong, but i don’t think Kegs are allowed. I could be wrong, but i believe it’s something to do with being a public source or something.

From a Quad tailgater...
1. I don’t see people on the Quad with generators, so I’m not sure about enforcement. That said, there are numerous (free) power plugs around the Quad set up especially for tailgaters, specifically intended to discourage generators. You’ll see them set up in the middle of grassy areas, usually just a waist-high particle board with lots of outlets. I think the limit is two plugs per tailgate, and no “spidering.” As long as you’re reasonable about the “two plug” limit, I think you could get away with a good bit. Stay away from crock pots and the like; TVs are very common. On the other hand, if you do end up plugging in too much and flipping a circuit breaker, your neighbors will be most unhappy with you.
2. Most of the Quad is free. There are some prime spots that are paid, and there are some areas where tailgating is not allowed. If you have a 20×20, you’ll need to get a permit (10×10 is the largest you can have without a permit). Never had to do that, but I’d look for event people at 6pm on Friday.
3. Doubt it. Parking has gotten considerably worse since ‘07. Worth a shot, though—go check it out and see. If nobody’s put signs up or standing around guarding, you’re probably good to go.
4. I’ve heard some pretty loud music on gamedays, my tailgate included. I’d worry more about your neighbors than any authorities.
5. Yes, That Other Dave is right: No kegs. This is not a “gameday” rule, this is an “all the time” rule. Single sources are prohibited on the campus grounds—all the frat parties use cans or cups. I’ve snuck a keg on the Quad before, but the operative term here is “snuck.” If you bring one, hide it. Might not be worth the hassle/worry.
6. Open container laws are pretty much unenforced around campus on gameday. They might tell you to put it in a cup, so I’d bring a lot of Solo cups with you. Koozies are a good alternative, as Espyonage says.
PNG is exactly right
though, I would be careful with glass bottles, I’ve been hassled before and talked my way out of a ticket at one point. Just stick with cans and you won’t be bothered at all

Curiosity is killing me now. What is the problem with gas operated generators on the quad
"Hell, no! A tie is like kissing your sister!"
I mean, I know it is against the rules, but what is the reasoning behind it?

hmmm
What about turkey fryers with a propane bottle?
We were going to do a potato/corn/sausage boil.
Are they allowed?
Rules website
http://uagameday.com/football/the-quad.php (see the tabs under “The Quad”)
I’ve seen turkey fryers with propane several times, and have actually hosted some LSU fans who did a whole turkey at my tailgate. I do know that they’re pretty strict about not dumping coals or cooking oil on the grounds, so be sure to have something to put that in.
Also, it’s worth nothing: Parking and driving on campus has completely changed. There are now roads that are closed to vehicles altogether—they’re trying to make it a “pedestrian-friendly campus.” Don’t assume you can park where you did last time. Also, be sure to see the rules and maps regarding Quad drop-off, which is now only permitted on Colonial Drive before after 6pm Friday and before 9am Saturday. You definitely want to know about that, because you don’t want to be the guys who have to carry your crap half a mile to get to your spot.
Thanks for the heads up man.
We are tailgating with some Alabama friends who have a spot in the quad. We’ll set up tents the night before then planned to drop off the gear Saturdya morning. I’ll check out the rules, we really appreciate it.
i'd go with one of them "Gator Net" things
they’re supposed to help w/ gas mileage and cheaper then gettin a replacement from the junkyard too…
i'm not signin shit
