Lies Miles lying about not knowing who called for the spike -- along with video of HIM on the sidelines CALLING FOR THE SPIKE. What a jackass, throwing his QB under the bus for his dumbassness.

Gee, do you think this will hurt recruiting?

Come to LSU, where your coach can blow your chance at playing in a bcs bowl, blame the refs for not accepting his “verbal” timeout, blame the players for getting the wrong signal, and blame the guys in his headset for being confused.
Yeah, that won’t hurt recruiting at all. At least it’s not his own fault…

It is one thing
to make a bad call…Miles will do that on occasion. It is another thing to put the blame on someone else. Great coaches always take the blame on themselves. I don’t know how many times I heard Coach Bryant take the blame for a mistake a player made. But in this case it goes beyond just putting the blame on others. It is flat out lying because he was calling for a spike and then he says he doesn’t know or someone else made the call etc. The LSU fans will remember the way he acted after the game more than the dumb call at the end of the game.
At least he could have said, “I thought maybe we could spike it and have no time go off the clock.” That would be a dumb thing to say, but at least it could explain his dumb move, and save a little face. Instead he just lies and is he caught in it now.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

I agree; if you make a boneheaded call, just take the fall or at least try to come up with a plausible excuse. If he had said something like “There was some confusion as to whether we were going to try and get the FG unit out or take a shot at the end zone, and with the ball getting set there just wasn’t enough time to make either decision so I called for the spike hoping we could get it before the clock expired. It didn’t work, and it’s my fault for not having the decision made and the players ready for the next play.” then I’d cut him some slack. I’ve said several times on here and on the radio hour(ish) that I don’t think Miles is the total boob he’s made out to be, just that his teams don’t play with the kind of focus and discipline that elite teams should and that’s a reflection on him, but after yesterday? I’m leaning more towards boob. He showed that he clearly had no idea what was going on in the game and on the clock and cost his team a chance at a win.

Wow...
… if I’m a big-time coach recruiting against LSU, I have that video saved to my iPhone and I show it to every recruit who ever even mentions LSU.

Is there anything else he could have done?
I was wondering this right after I saw the play on tv, but if we assume that he just wasn’t ready for Jefferson to complete the pass and that’s why he didn’t have the field goal unit ready or another play called, could he have done something like intentionally break the huddle with 12 players or commit a false start penalty before the ball was set, just to make the clock stop?

I think you hit the nail on the head. He could have had the field goal unit ready. He did not have enough time to intentionally commit a penalty, though. It would have been declined; game over.

he could have held a 45-minute meeting prior to the game to iron out what would happen in this type of situation like other coaches are known to do.

i have never played football
so forgive if this is really a stupid question but IS that the universal movement to signal spiking the ball?
i read somewhere else today that there is speculation that he was signaling that the receiver was in fact down prior to having the ball stripped out. is that possible?

actually, it doesn't really matter...
the fact there wasn’t a clear indication for exactly what was supposed to be done is miles fault. period. here’s what qb jordan jefferson said of the play.
“I know there was a lot of confusion on the sideline. Nobody knew what to do.”
it’s the HC’s job to make sure that doesn’t happen. and he blew it.

that's....
….what it looks like to me (and yes, that is a pretty universal signal to spike the ball, if he was trying to say the receiver was down he should have been using both hands like the refs do).

Lame
That sounds like a huge, lame-ass excuse to me. IF that is what he was doing, he would have mentioned that when he was being asked about who signaled the spike.

and keep in mind...
all that screw up did was prevent them from having a chance to win the game. this idea that they were able to beat ole miss except for that one play is downright ludicrous. ole miss outplayed them for almost that whole game and it wasn’t till they got a fire under their asses in the last three minutes that they did anything about it.
what’s gotten lost in all this bitching about that play is the fact ole miss played a damn good game of football. they deserve credit for that as much as miles deserves blame for the horrible game management.
