Real game thread coming up closer to kick off, but since some of y'all are clearly antsy and ready to go this morning I thought I'd throw up an early thread to get the chatter going.

Auburn will give up in which quarter . . .

I’d say after we score our first points of the 3rd quarter, but it could be earlier.

Todd will throw 3 picks today.

2 will be returned for TD’s.

This is the first Iron Bowl I will not watch the game in my life. Stupid CBS and I had tickets for the first time in 6 years.
Well Roll tide anyways.

Crush Auburn bama.

NO! You can't just give up like that!

There is NOTHING more important than this game today and for you to break the string could upset the natural balance of the universe.
If it means quitting your job or leaving your wife in order to see the game then you simply must.

That run d is terrible...

and the secondary is worse. Arkansas would have beaten the shorties and, hell, McCluster would still be running.

TCU is #2 in my books

followed by UF.

#4-6 are all 1986 WAC schools: Boise, Cincy, Texas.

Texas...

…was awful, especially on defense. I think the question is was this some sort of random anomaly, or was Texas really exposed. It is really hard to say because of the complete lack of really good teams. Dr. Saturday had a good article, and a look at the numbers.

My own personal take is that I have seen Texas play several times and their defense has looked as physical and fast as anyone else’s defense. I think without any more information you would probably have to give them the benefit of the doubt until further notice. That said the good news is of course, Texas definitely showed a chink in their armour.

by Kenny483 on Nov 27, 2009 10:11 AM CST up reply actions

Just run right at them...

They are undersized up front. Hell, UCF did it. And, the secondary is just not very good as far as getting in position, esp the safety play. They are physical and gifted athletes…

Whomever that was that returned the kick in the 4th Q was holly-hell fast!

Texas leads the nation in rushing defense (50.1 ypg) . . .

but they’ve only played 1 team with a rushing offense in the top 50: OK St (16), who threw 4 INT’s against the Horns.

Compare that with Bama, ranked 2nd nationally (70.6 ypg), who has played 5 teams with a rushing offense in the top 50: VA Tech (18), UK (20), Ole Mss (23), Tennessee (48), and MSU (12).

I don’t think there is any question about who has the better run defense.

by M. Johnson Defender on Nov 27, 2009 11:01 AM CST up reply actions

all my UT-rooting friends...

are a bit… testy today. one posted about the game on his FB page and i commented "i enjoyed it thoroughly. " here were the multiple replies to that simple statement:

First really close game we had all year. Unlike Bama, which seems to eek by mos weeks and only blows out the Chattanoogas of the world.
I should amend my Bama trash talk. You guys blow out Miss State, Kentucky and a coupla other schools that are known mostly for basketball. My bad.
I wasn’t knocking schedule. Margin of victory. And anyway, it’s Bama and the inflated SEC. They’re always open for trash-talking.

Didn't we only have two wins by single digits?

UT and LSU?

Thought so. Isn’t our MOV something like 22.4 pts to their 26 pts? Haven’t we played nine teams in the top 40 in total defense? Haven’t we given up a total of 10 defensive TDs?

Thought so…

Texas Homers

Also, along those same lines for Texas homer fans. The meme after this game was that Texas would not have to worry about playing an offense as good as, 6-6 Texas A & M the rest of the year. Florida is averaging 6.6 yards a play (9th), Alabama is averaging 6.2 yards a play (23rd), and Texas A&M was averaging 5.7 yards a play (48th) going into that game. Also, Texas was averaging 5.8 yards a play (45th) going into that game.

Last Year

Alabama let Florida and Utah score 31 against them, and that was a really good defense too.

by Kenny483 on Nov 27, 2009 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

SEC inflated?

Let’s have a look at the Big 12:

The Kansas St. v. Nebraska game last week determined who would face Texas in the B12 CG. So that means that KSU, despite losing to LA-Lafayette, was this close (holds thumb and index finger ever so slightly apart) to playing for a shot at the Big 12 Championship and a BCS berth. But with their loss, they were not bowl eligible, and therefore they will be watching bowls season in the comfort of their homes.

So yes, Texas is definitely representing a conference that’s on the up and up…

I kind of like NUs chances

They play good defense…bend but don’t break. And, when they try, they can/do run downhill.

want to get a good idea of what is REALLY at stake today?

two years ago, on Nov. 19, 2007, alabama had come off a three-game skid that included a humiliating loss to UL-Monroe. as the team prepared for the iron bowl, coach saban had to face a particularly critical media contingent in his press conference. what got played on sportscenter and the like were his more testy comments but coach laid a hell of a lot of things on the line outside of that.

so if you want to get a good idea of how far this program has come in two years and how we aspire to do things – not just the things we aspire to do – then you might want to take 4-and-a-half minutes this morning and watch this youtube vid.

ROLL TIDE! says this Gator

I will never forgive you guys if you don’t make it undefeated into what is, to my mind, the real national championship game next week. Just think, if we were a ridiculous conference like the Big 10, we both could have gone undefeated, having never played, and met up in Pasadena for an awesome West Coast showdown.
