Grab your barf bags; it's gonna' be a long, long week

Perhaps you were clued in by the openly-reminiscent, misty-eyed Verne and Danielson yesterday. Or, perhaps Tracy Wolfson's eye black gave it away. In any event, this is going to be a long, long week filled with over-the-top fauning, maudlin displays of Tebowlove (tm), and ridiculous pronouncements on all things Tebow.

Today, comes the beginning. From Mr. Forde at ESPN

Generosity of Spirit Sets Tebow Apart

He said afterward that he wants the fans to remember him for "how much I cared." The fact is, fans have never cared so much about a player before.

"I've never seen anything like it," Florida coach Urban Meyer said. "… He's made unselfish kind of a cool thing."

None of us has seen anything like it. What makes Tebow unique in the 140-year history of this game is not just his unquenchable spirit. It's his generosity of spirit. (-emphasis, mine)

This is just the first, but by no means the last, awkward mawkish thing written this week.

Instead of the game of the decade, the battle of #1 and #2, the battle of the two best defenses in football, the battle of Heisman finalists, the second matchup of Meyer-Saban, the seventh meeting between Alabama and Florida in the SECCG. the battle for conference supremacy, the national title implications...we are going to be exposed to nitwit human interest stories and disgusting puffery.

Grab the barf bags.

Industrial strength barf bags.

Or maybe an entire pop-up box of barf bags. One thing I am so tired of is the self-conscious, overdone display of “look how special I am because I am so special.” Whatever happened to a sense of proportion. On the field, within the rules of the game, there is no place for moderation, but in life? If you really are Superman, you don’t have to walk around acting like it; you let the deeds speak for themselves.

You can't win. You can't break even. You can't get out of the game.

Totally agree.

The UF-FSU game yesterday was sickening with all the worship of Tebow. The UF fans are as much in love with Timmy as CBS. The thing that caught me yesterday was that it was Senior Day at UF for a large class of seniors. But in reality it was all about Tebow. Not the team, not the seniors, just Tebow. You would have thought Tebow as th eonly one graduating. Actually, you would have thought saying bye-bye to Tebow was the only reason 90,000 were on hand.

If I were a senior lineman for UF I might have a hard time blocking for the messiah.

And, anyone who can’t tell the difference between a really humble and nice guy named Colt McCoy and Tebow has been blinded by the hype.

And, why does Tebow sound like a sissy when he does an interview?

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

Here is the funniest part of the article...or

…should I say the most evident reason to beleive Gregg Doyal is a crack smoker…

“This weekend, Florida named its score against a Florida State team with more talent than Texas A&M or Auburn”. – Gregg Doyal

really? FSU is better than Auburn? REALLY? The same FSU team that needed a miracle to beat Jacksonville State and the same FSU team that beat a 2 win Maryland team in the waning seconds? The same FSU team that lost to USF with a first game freshman starter? WTF?

by akbrown15 on Nov 29, 2009 12:39 PM CST up reply actions

FSU has more talent than Auburn, especially on defense. The difference is that they have zero coaching and have rolled over all year. Methinks a team with less talent that’s well coached and plays tough is a more difficult than an opponent with tons of talent and no coaching.

by Bama philosophe on Nov 29, 2009 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

FSU doesn’t have that much talent on defense. Even if they were well-coached, which theyre not, they have very little experience. guys like mangum just arent very good.

Most of the guys wearing garnet and gold were recruited by UF and Bama too. The difference is that our coaches make players better, while FSU’s make them worse.

But in 2006 – UF was ranked 2nd and FSU 3rd.

Alabama
Florida
Florida State
Miami
Texas

I’m sorry but why would you mention the bible and crucification if you weren’t talking about HIS character? What do those things have to do with the media’s portrayal of him as the best player ever to play the game?

Further, the instigation that someone would be a hypocrite for ‘worshiping an idol (Tebow)’ seems to suggest that Tebow himself should be responsible for how he is portrayed. Maybe I’m reading in to that too much.

a) Totally correct – we did put Him there, but historically speaking, the religious establishment was behind his trial and execution. I didn’t expect that people would understand that correction. The romans basically said “we can’t find any fault in Him” and sent him back to the jews. Eventually, yes, roman soldiers put him on the cross. But yea, it’s our fault, and amazingly beautiful at that.

b) You said it better.

c) I mean, don’t drag his (Tebow’s) faith, or any faith into this. Seems whenever people aim for Tim Tebow they also aim for what he believes/stands for.

by rhinoskin on Nov 29, 2009 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

You sound like all the other Tebow worshipers. Why is Tebow the only player in college football whose religion is broadcast every time his name is mentioned ? There are thousands of other players who are just as religious as TT, they just don’t seek to exploit their personal relationship with God. I suppose the entire Bama team will be doomed to eternal damnation for circumventing God’s will by defeating the Chosen One’s team in the SECCG.

by MtnBama on Nov 30, 2009 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

There are few other players

who are as talented, yet as openly religious as Tebow. I have zero problem with someone being openly religious, in fact, it’s quite refreshing to me. I seriously doubt that he has some kind of agenda (i.e. calling CBS and getting them to come to retreats he goes to, or whatever). He’s in the spotlight, and unashamedly lets people know where he stands religiously. Now, what CBS and other networks do with that is quite out of his control, and I think the reason for that is precisely his position in the CFB league. If Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan lived a life like Tebow, I’m sure it would become a news story too, and probably grossly over-used as it has become with Tebow. There are just not that many players of his status in the game, and that’s why it gets the airtime it does.

shy away from unashamedly stating your opinions about moral and religious matters. You have some very strong opinions – ones that you would prefer that other people hold. Great. State them. Try to convince people. It’s a free country. If you had media swarming you, I seriously doubt you’d just sit on your opinions or stop living your life the way you want to live it. That’s not shoving it down people’s throats – it’s being true to what you believe and who you are. Give Tebow a break.

I think the game will be about #1 vs #2 - SURVIVAL

Yall are kind of jumping the gun with the Tebow stuff. Also, senior day in Gainesville was much different for the fans in attendance that it was for people watching the CBS perspective from home. All the seniors were honored equally – including one would-be senior who passed away in an auto accident a couple years ago.

I think that is most of the points made here...

…the media acts like Tebow is the only player on UF’s team. Honestly, do you not tire of hearing about just one player. I fully admit that Tebow is a special player but he would not be where he is without the rest of the team. The media (CBS in particular) rarely mentions the rest of the team. Why do you think there is a Tebow drinking game? Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate his talent and his class but there ARE other players with those qualities.

Personally

I will miss Spikes just as much as Tebow – he has been the emotional leader and captain of a defense that is probably the best to ever wear the orange and blue.

But even then – Spikes told Tebow on a recruiting trip “I’m going where you go.” And when Tebow came back for his senior year, Spikes did too – even though he was giving up way more than Tebow to do it. I am thankful that Spikes’ draft stock was not damaged at all by his return. His family needs the $$$ that the NFL will pay him next season.

Hell I am not even sure he is the best player who has played for Florida. Spurrier had alot of good players go through his system. Hell he was pretty good himself. As far as the NFL is concerned, I really have no idea what he’ll do there, but I surely agree that his skill set isn’t near NFL quality. It will be interesting to see if he would be willing to try playing a different position like fullback or tight end. As a Christian I approve and respect Tim's extroverted love for The Lord.

Tim throws a fat football. His ability to get rid of the ball quick is just not there. I’ve never seen him under center or run the Fla offense from a pro set. Nothing about his style adds up to success “on paper”. But….get this, Tim keeps himself in the presence of the Lord. Look at the book of 2 Samuel chapter 6 verse 11. Tim is modern days Obed-Edom. Regardless of the stage he represents The Lord. God has blessed Tebow accordingly. Tebow is a winner and it all starts with being a Christian. This is the reason our great country is failing economicaly. Our leaders have gone out of their way to remove God from everything. ( ie school, public functions ) hence there aren’t any blessings. Now, no I don’t believe Florida will roll into Atlanta sporting the Arc of the Covenant yet having a QB who literally walks with God in everything he does doesn’t hurt their chances.

he seems like a good kid. However, as human being and citizen of earth, i’m shoked and appalled at the ritual genital mutialtion that he performs on children too small to fight back, i think it’s more than just a bit disturbing. it’s downright barbaric, inhumane and insanely supertistious, ignorant, and ethnocentric to the max. i mean seriously, it’s a human rights violation, and not only does he talk about it openly, others speak about it as if it were a GOOD THING?!?!??!!

wtf? these kids are less than 4 years old and WAAAAYYYY too young to decide if they want their dicks chopped up to please one small weird recent off sect of christians. whatever church tebow belongs to is apostate and they are ritually harming small children, it would and should be more correctly described as “ritual child abuse/sexual mutilation”. it’s a human right abuse, if soldiers did it during war time they would be hanged after the war for war crimes. it’s not some nice young man out there doing gods work, it is far far from it. god wants boys and girls to have intact genitalia, thats why he made them that way.

Filipino circumcision is a cultural tradition.

Granted, it is based in Jewish/Christianity tradition, but whether you agree or disagree with this ‘tradition’, it is still part of Filipino culture. The doctors involved were Filipino. You make it sound as if Tebow and a band of lunatic Christians invaded the Philippines and started chopping on children against the will of the locals. (war crimes reference). The Tebow’s and others were there to provide free medical treatment for the locals who came voluntarily for various medical/dental reasons.

The SEC should put some kind of clause in to not play an SECCG if the teams to play are ranked 1 and 2 in the BCS standings. Winner of the NC takes both the SEC Championship and the National Title. Why not have the two best teams in the country actually play in the NC game as opposed to one knocking the other out a right before the final standings are set? Yall’s thought?

by dsz002 on Dec 1, 2009 1:04 AM CST reply actions

Nope.

You have to beat the best to be the best, and if the SECCG is the de facto national title, then so be it. Besides, I am in that camp that firmly believe that you absolutely must win your conference to play for a nat’l title. Without being the undisputed conference overlord, how can you even lay claim to the boast that you are the best in the nation.

dsz002 makes a decent point though

If it were Ohio State and Penn State ranked #1 and #2 instead of UF and Bama (or whichever Big 10 teams didn’t play each other this year), then none of the conference championship games would matter this season.

by skigator93 on Dec 1, 2009 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

The B10s unbalanced schedule does create nightmares...

and, as I was about to type more, my head just started hurting trying to figure out the reaction. It would probably be the other conferences and media raising holy hell, pointing out that this is the reason for CCGs, and then Delaney would smugly go about his business despite the hue and cry…

And he’d have good reason to. I can think of only one other conference that has been the beneficiary of undeserved BCSCGs…the B12.

The Big East also does it...

But with a CCG it nullifies the unbalanced skeddie

If 1 and 2 are in the same division, that’s sorted out on the field. If they are in diff divisions, then its settled in ATL.

The only time I remember it being a source of contro. was UGA in 2007. But, they had a chance to take care of business in their division and failed to do so, losing twice. So, that brings me to my first point: No conference title, no BCS game for you.

by Stuck in the Plains on Dec 1, 2009 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

The schedule...

…still isn’t balanced though and therefore, basically still the same problem. I understand what you’re saying about it being settled in the division or in ATL, but it still doesn’t take away the fact that the schedules are unbalanced. I don’t think the mere presence of divisions addresses the problem of unbalanced schedules enough.

by Nico2.0 on Dec 1, 2009 11:22 AM CST up reply actions

If we hadn't added ARK and SoCar

then I think a round robin would be feasible…not sure how you resolve that with 12 teams.

The addition of PSU to the B10 was just bizarre, since the schools had no natural affinity and/or rivalry and/or cultural similarities. They should add ND and go to divisions, or let PSU go dominate the Big East and play a round robin (obviously that would never happen, because Jo Pa won’t play Pitt again as long as there is life in his dessicated undead body).

why is that?

i keep seeing references to this concept; that JoPa will never play Pitt as long as he’s coach at Penn St.

any reason for that? or is he just scared of a glorified MAC team?

Jo Pa has nursed a grudge

for the better part of 20-30 years. He wanted to fashion an Eastern Seaboard athletic conference, and Pitt (allegedly) spurned the notion. That’s why he’s been calling for expansion of the B10 to include more eastern schools (namely, Pitt).

Plus, they are traditional rivals that sadly no longer play. Although there always was/is animosity between the cross-state institutions. Urban v. Rural, land grant v. liberal arts, etc.

It really depends on where the seats are

I have a ticket “professional” buddy who told me the “walk in” price is $300 – meaning that’s the cheapest the worst seats are going for. If I can help it, I always prefer to sell to a friend at face because it’s a round world and all. If you don’t know anyone going that needs seats though, you might as well Ebay it and make some dollars to brighten your family’s holiday!

Good luck.
