Reliable chatter this morning is that Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain could be on the early list of potential candidates to replace Steve Kragthorpe as head coach at Louisville.
Hopefully he sticks around at least one more year as our OC, but you can't fault a man for grabbing at an opportunity to be a head coach at a BCS school. I think the situation is right at Louisville (they play in a BCS league, and a weak one at that, and have shown that they are willing to put the resources into building a successful football program) for someone to make that jump, but they are lacking in talent right now and its a definite rebuilding project.

Agreed
I would like to see him stay one more year, but you cannot fault anyone for pursuing their own goals.

I don't see him as a HC...
…at a high profile BCS job yet, but I could see him taking over some scrappy mid-major, getting them decent and to a bowl a few years in a row, then jumping up to the bigs.

Rumor
was he was interested in the WKU job. That’s pretty much your definition of a crappy mid-major.
Oh wait, you said scrappy…. my bad.

Yes, they hired an assistant from another program... the name escapes me though.

well, it never hurts to upgrade
either… it’s hard to tell, but apparently he’s a great QB coach, he does seem to have room for improvment when it comes to red zone play calling though.

So, who would we go looking for to replace him?

I’m think the Saints offense is mainly handled by HC Sean Payton, he calls the plays too. Last years Saints OC went to be HC at Syracuse, Doug Marrone, and he had a big part in putting that together too

Absolutely right.
Saints have ran Payton’s offense since his arrival, and he does call all the plays.

Well it would have to be a combo OC/qb coach. Otherwise I would say David Shaw of Stanford has to be a great candidate, but he isn’t a qb coach. Further you have to think he would stick with a “pro-style” offense, i.e. no spread offense gurus or triple-option attacks. Otherwise there are a whole group of guys we’d probably be interested in, people like Bryan Harsin of Boise State and Justin Fuente at TCU coming to mind. Given those requirements I’d say Frank Cignetti would be a solid pick – he runs a “pro style” offense at Pitt, is a qb coach and has had success in two different conferences, in the PAC-10 at Cal and in the Big East at Pitt. Further he got his start as a pro-coach and has been around for a while. And his MO is a QB developer. Of course part of the reason he moved to Pitt was to be closer to where he grew up, so it might not be an option.
But then...
….we’d be so confused about which Cignetti we were talking about!

Boise State...
I don’t think runs a spread, at least not like WVU, UF, AU, etc. They may have some spread elements, but I think they’re more of a Ace type of team. It just seems like they have a lot more multiple formations-type of offense than a spread-type. JMO.

you are right, they are not a spread offense ala Oregon, WVU, Texas, etc…. but they definitely aren’t in the mold of what we would consider the pro-style paradigm. don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have someone down here with a different offensive philosophy, it’s just that I have a hard time seeing Saban commit to that kind of offense when it appears he’s focused his recruiting on players who fit in a more conventional offense.
Actually...
…I think he’d be a fine OC….

yep
I think he’s a good coordinator as well, but I’ve also heard he’s a huge jerk so I dont really want any piece of him. Can you imagine his ego working with Saban?
he was injured. injured bad.

Hell
what about Norm Chow? Saban loves him some balanced/multiple/pro-style offenses and Chow is one of the best. We wanted him before he went to UCLA but doesn’t seem as though that experiment is going all that well at the moment. Perhaps he’d like to add another NC to his resume.
