Stoops to Notre Dame fell through?

As we all know now Charlie Weis has been fired by Notre Dame.

There has been a lot of talk about Bob Stoops being a candidate, so much so that he has been asked about the Notre Dame opening several times in recent days. In any event, Notre Dame boards everywhere are pretty much lit up now with discussions that Stoops and Notre Dame reached a rough agreement for him to be the next coach in South Bend, but that ultimately the deal fell through when Notre Dame would not agree to meet Stoops' financial demands.

Perhaps that is all smoke, mind you, but I do find it interesting. Stoops is already one of the highest paid coaches in the country -- around 4 million per year -- and it really does just make you wonder how financially limited Notre Dame may be in this economy while having to pay Weis an obscene buyout. I'll say this... if they are, you can forget any chance of them getting a guy like Stoops, Meyer, Saban, etc. No top coach is going leave an elite job to take a pay cut to rebuild somewhere else.

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Notre Dame

should hire Lou Holtz again.

Hell, why not bring back Bob Davie. Rick Minter. Charlie Strong. All-Star Staff in South Bend, Indiana, the mecca of the Midwest. Or they could call Lane Kiffin. That’d be awesome.

MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

Stoops

I thinks Stoops has a huge retention bonus that is coming in the next year or two. I am sure if he was leaving he would want that money to be made up somehow. It still hard for me to believe he would leave Oklahoma, when he has had better opportunities in the past.

I don't think ND is a better job than OK right now...

it’d hafta be the most ridiculous amount of money ever to get him to leave the Sooners for South Bend…and even more for Meyer…like…an ass-load of money…

enjoy...

And Saban...

….got a ridiculous amount of money to come (and yes, I know it was a paycut, but by college standards….)

It

was a little bit different b/c Saban was in the NFL, the supposed “pinnacle” of footballness. People laughed at the thought of an NFL HC going back to college. OU has a great winning tradition and I think ND has been damaged by all the fail that has happened there since Holtz left.

That's

certainly not to say that Alabama wasn’t damaged when Saban arrived. It certainly was, thus the supreme importance of his hiring.

That would be great for ND

They could win 10 games a year and still continue their tradition of losing in the post season.

Thank you for posting that,

I just spent 10 minutes on Wikipedia finding out that that show aired 200(!) episodes, that the woman who played Coach’s daughter went on to play Mary Bailey on Jericho and is still very hot for being 42, and that, while the show was based on the University of Minnesota, it’s creator was an Iowa grad and almost all of the establishing shots were done in Iowa City.

Before the Iron Bowl, Bama fans said Auburn ran a "high school offense"

Call me crazy, but I still think Meyer’s the guy. Nothing left to prove at UF.

And, in a related story, this week marked the 5,000th performance of the Broadway musical "Cats." It also marked the 5,000th time a guy turned to his wife and said, "What the hell is this?"

by jd is legend on Nov 30, 2009 7:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

what about

becoming the winningest coach in UF history? SEC history?

that’s still sort of out on the table along with loads of other marks that he could never obtain at Notre Dame because he cannot recruit the athletes necessary to run his spread there.

At UF, Meyer knows that he will always be able to compete. At ND he could easily fail and be known forever as Spurrier Jr. If you’ve wathced us play this season, you’ll note that Urban isn’t exactly the gunslinging gambler type.

by skigator93 on Nov 30, 2009 7:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Meyer won't be at Florida long enough to become the winningest coach in SEC history

I don’t know who has the most wins in UF history (I’d guess Spurrier) so he may get that record, but I honestly don’t think he cares about those records.

he cannot recruit the athletes necessary to run his spread [at Notre Dame]

Then how was he ever successful at Utah and Bowling Green??

He once said Notre Dame was his “dream job.” I know he has made statements since that downplay his interest in the job, but for a Catholic who has said something like that in the past, with the most perfect spread QB ever graduating and on the heels of potentially 3 NCs in 4 years, I’d have to guess he would think long and hard (huh huh) about taking the Irish job.

Holy run-on sentence, Batman!

Spurrier won 122 games at Florida,

1st by a long ways.

Meyer took over in 2005 and has won 9, 13, 9, 13, and 12 games. So 56 so far. He would need to average 10 wins/season for the next seven years to pass Spurrier.

Answer to your question

Then how was he ever successful at Utah and Bowling Green??

Here’s how he was successful at Bowling Green and at Utah

Finding athletes good enough to run the offense aginst Kent State, Ball State, Central Michigan and Buffalo is a far cry from finding athletes good enough to find success in the scheme against the competition Notre Dame typically plays against. Plus, Utah and Bowling Green will accept good athletes that are “a little weak” on the textbook side of things a lot more readily than Notre Dame will.

They need someone like Rich Brooks

Bring him in to add stability to the program. He’ll retire in a few years.
Bring in Charlie Strong as DC/HC in waiting.
In one or two years bring in a hot OC to keep their Off. recruiting pipeline flowing.

From what I've read,

ND’s AD is a stat freak, and made some off-handed remarks about AL, TX, FLA, and TCU being so good b/c they had Top 10 defenses….that alone makes me think Gary Patterson has the edge over Brian Kelly

ND is now a second tier program

meaning that leaving Oklahoma, Texas, UF, Bama, etc. for the job would be a demotion. They will end up with an up and comer after being turned down by a dozen big names.

Eh, I wouldn't go that far...

… sure anyone in the SEC would love to see Urban Meyer gone, but this isn’t about Meyer it’s about Stoops.

Even so, you’re right. Notre Dame is not a premier program and no one really cares about who they hire. They just care if it’s an elite, big-time name like Stoops or Meyer. If those guys hire Kelly, I can guarantee you that a shit will not be given here at RBR.

I don't think anyone fears a good coach

in the SEC you face them nearly every week.
Meyer – NC
Saban – NC
Lane – NC (as OC, and he is turning around the Vols)
SOS – NC
Richt – NC (as OC, but he can stand on his own merits)
Brooks – curmudgeon genius, master of the rebuild
Johnson – NC (1-AA)
Mullen – NC (as OC, but has been damned good his first year)
Chizik – NC (as DC, at least he was smart enough to hire well)
Hat – NC
Nutt – as long as they’re the underdog
Petrino – may be a viper, but is a damned good coach

don’t forget, that when saban came, there were two other NC coaches in the league as well. You don’t come to this league, and play at this level being afraid of the competition. That’s what drives these guys. All things being equal (which they can’t be) but if the talent were the same, where would Meyer be? Working over Purdue or matching wits with a Saban or Richt or Petrino?

But out of the 11 other SEC coaches, there are only 2 that I believe can truly outcoach Meyer.

A vs. The

I would argue that over the last 100 years, that ND has had more recruiting ability, revenue, and wins, as well as a national fan base (inlcuding haters) and attention from casual fans that no other program has had. I am not a ND fan, and I do not envy them, but neither Alabama, USC, Michigan, Texas can claim to have the combination of fanbase, revenue and wins that ND has.

The risk is that they slip from being “The” premier program to “A” premier program, and 15 years of mediocrity is leading them to that path. But I would be curious if NBC’s ratings have really slipped. Schadenfruede is a powerful force in college football, and I bet a lot of haters have been tuning in over the years.

As much as I hate ND, and the two NC’s they claim that rightfully belong to us ;-), it is important to college football that they stay a powerhouse. The whole sport would lose some luster if ND slid into the obscurity of the Big East or Big 10.

The NBC contract alone is the source of too much revenue to let the status slip.
I predict that they will relax their admission standards for atheletes like other schools, and follow Bama’s example by throwing the bank at a name coach.

I disagree
…it is important to college football that they stay a powerhouse. The whole sport would lose some luster if ND slid into the obscurity of the Big East or Big 10.

The sport is no longer dependent on any team (if it ever was at all), ours included. Plenty of great programs have gone down the toilet and college football keeps on chugging.

Yep

and, I don’t want to hear any of these “over the past 100 years” BS about the domers. Let’s talk modern era; or, hell, the past 20-30 years. That is far more relevant to 19 year olds than what Doc Blanchard did in a leather helmet against Army before their grandfathers were born…

If that is the metric, then ND has largely been the most-talked about, but utterly irrelevant, program of the past two decades.

The

past decade pre-Saban has certainly caused a lot of us to look in the mirror, and frankly I’m glad. I’ve never liked the “entitlement” group of our fanbase and I suspect ND has theirs as well. I’m glad Alabama realized it can’t just throw any old guy who is an “Alabama man” into the HC position and expect to sleep walk to national titles because of our name. Bama got its head out its ass, upgraded facilities (still in progress), got a top notch coach and is generally doing everything it can to put itself in the position of being a premier program and championship contender.

I didn't forget...

But we have, at the least, had half a dozen or so 10 wins seasons in that same span. Our problem was not continual suckage, it was sporadically being good, and then mediocre, and then outright bad….rinse and repeat. I think TW, BD and CW all had a 10 win season each.

I see the parallels you’re trying to draw, but we have been a tad better than ND.
