"Our coaches figured out their signals and we were able to take advantage."
Montgomery Advertiser: Alabama Wins, 26-21
That quotes comes Auburn wide receiver Darvin Adams, and I really don't know what to make of it. If the Auburn coaching staff really knew our defensive signals, then why did they only score seven points in the final three and a half quarters? On the other hand, though, it does make you a bit paranoid because if the Auburn coaches knew, the Florida coaches will too.

I would hardly
call a safety bitting on a pump fake “taking advantage.”
However, Saban and Smart will fix this.

Eh, maybe...

Eh, maybe, but maybe not. If they knew that corner blitz was on from Marquis Johnson, and you know that Mark Barron is an aggressive player (and I’m sure they knew that much), then suddenly that double move pattern becomes the absolute perfect call in that situation.

Yep --
not to mention the fact that MJ got nowhere near Todd on the play.

And beyond that...
… notice that even though we did a good job of disguising the blitz in terms of pre-snap alignment, Auburn right tackle Andrew McCain saw it coming the whole way and moved out to block Johnson on his way in.
Who really knows? Maybe they had them, maybe they didn’t. On that one play, though, they definitely called the absolute perfect play for the defensive call we had, so perhaps they did get at least some of our signals.

I don’t put a lot of stock in this. as you’ve appropriately queried, if they knew our signals they would have done much more damage… further on their two big plays, it was our lack of execution (backside contain from Anders, blown coverage from Barron) and not so much any sort of schematic advantage that allowed them their yards…
Good then
now we can change it up some for UF…..glad Smart knows that now rather then after the UF game.
Why?
The game’s over, and they came close to pulling the upset. Who cares if Florida knows? Right?

You don't get signals that way...
… coaches film is silent, and the overwhelming majority of the signals are verbal. You can watch game film for 100 years and not figure out most of the signals. If they found them out, they did so some other way.

Catching signals
during the game is much more believable.
Mind you, I last played football at the high school level.

maybe the plot

Game tape
also doesn’t show anything useful from the sidelines. The end zone shot doesn’t show it at all, and the sideline shot stays with the action on the field.
-D.
I will say
now that I think about it their right tackle picking up Johnson could be some proof. It does sort of look like they knew he was coming.
I’ll give Auburn coaches credit if they heard something verbally and figured it out well they are pretty smart. But I wonder why they didn’t later pick up Javy & Ro in the 4th when they also came from the right to throw them for a big loss and actually change field position? That sack may have been our biggest defensive play of the day. If Auburn just throws incomplete there then they punt us inside the 5 again, into that noise – well the drive may never have happened.

Only intercepted one signal on the two big plays
according to this article. This makes it sound like they only had the signal for a corner blitz. We called corner blitzes more than twice though, so maybe it was a particular type of corner blitz? Or perhaps he misspoke and what really happened is that the coaches picked up on a tell from a particular player when a blitz was coming. Looking at the replay (1:13:14 mark at secdigitalnetwork.com), as the broadcast comes off of a scholar athlete graphic and goes to the play, Todd is calling an audible and Marquis Johnson barely glances at the receiver a couple of times, he pretty much stares at the QB the whole time. Looking at a couple of other plays, this doesn’t seem unusual and I didn’t notice anything obviously different in his alignment between blitzes and non-blitzes.
If you want to believe conspiracies though, James Willis is the way to go. The Barners have been trying to tell us all year he’s a plant, we just wouldn’t believe them.
There it is!!!
Willis was feeding Auburn our signals. Hurry up TET, seize this rumor and GO!

Bama must be good...
If Aubie knew the coverage and still couldn’t manage to win, we can only imagine the outcome if Aubie had played without that knowledge
