Going outside comfort zone here, but credible people saying today they believe Bob Stoops will wind up coaching at Notre Dame next season.

Twitter: Adam Schefter

I tell you, if this happens, the repercussions could be huge. Oklahoma is loaded with talent and they would get a big-time coach in their own right, and could very well poach the coach from another top program. Stay tuned, this one could get interesting.

…I’m wondering about things today….it makes you wonder sometimes if this type of thing is actually true to media circulated rumors actually sabotage it?

Who do they get?

OTS probably has a better idea on this than myself, but I would think that possibly Mike Stoops, or Air Leech will be in the running.

I wouldn't be shocked...

…to see Kevin Sumlin winds up at OU. He was on Stoop’s staff for four years or so before moving to HC at Houston and he’s done a hell of a job there.

Ah, Good Call

I didn’t know he was part of the OU staff

Aim Higher

I would think Oklahoma could surely do better than anyone else listed. I would think at minimum Brian Kelly would be on the list. I will still be a little surprised if Stoops leaves Oklahoma. I am sure Texas fans are salivating at the thought.

I'll never live that down will I?

But you have to admit, he turned Tulsa into an offensive juggernaut with shitty players. How he didn’t work out at Louisville I’ll never know.

True

It is a bit of a headscratcher how he tanked so badly at Louisville. He even had Brohm for a year.

Oddly enough, I saw him coach Tulsa in the 2005 CUSA Championship game….and for some reason, I can’t find my t-shirt from that game.

not sure

a lot of rumours that the guys left over from the petrino admin were “bad character guys” then a while shit load of them quit the team. oh and they flat out refused to coach and play defense. not sure who’s fault that was, but when they gave up like 60 points to FUCKING SYRACUSE a few years ago, kraigthorp shoulda been run out of town on a god damned rail. a buddy of mine was in the stands that day, we were texting, i convinced him to start a chant of “kraigthorp sucks, kraigthorp sucks!” which was enthusiasticaly taken up by most of the (dwindling few) folks still inside papa johns stadium.

either way it’s good riddance to bad rubbish and it’s also about 19 months too late.

I have no clue, really...

… I imagine Leach would be on the short list because he has no buyout and he has a previous coaching stint in Norman. Of course, he’s an odd ball and I’m not sure how he would fit in with a big-time program, so maybe he’s not as viable as you might think.

Aside from Leach, I imagine you’d have the usual candidates like Kelly and Harbaugh. I suppose they might consider some top-notch coordinators like Charlie Strong, but I have a hard time seeing them hire someone with no previous head coaching experience.

since getting the D-coordinator from UF worked out so well the 1st time, why not try it again.

it pretty much translates into “land pirates” anyway, no need for him to hang onto the tejas tech stuff.

I would be shocked if Stoops

left OU, but you never know. Some think ND already has a coach lined up and if that is true no way it is Stoops.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

by 5026 on Nov 30, 2009 7:07 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

is it possibly he’s just angling for a better contract from OU ala RichRod?

by cjbama on Nov 30, 2009 7:45 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

How much better...

…could his contract get realistically?

by Nico2.0 on Nov 30, 2009 7:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly...

… he’s already practically the highest paid coach in the country, and he has some really big bonuses right coming up right around the corner. If he wants to make more money than he is right now, he’s going to have to go to the NFL, and I’m not even sure he can make it there.

well, along the same lines, is he really going to get that much more from ND? and if not, what possible motivation would he have – to go from a perennial power to a has-been with unique recruiting hurdles?

by cjbama on Nov 30, 2009 7:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Who knows?

He’s been at Oklahoma for 11 seasons now, and that’s a long time for anyone to stay at a school regardless. He has one good move left, and honestly life would probably be a hell of a lot easier for him at Notre Dame than it would be at Oklahoma. The level of competition is nowhere near what it is in South Bend like it is in the Big 12.

Hell, at Notre Dame, Stoops could go 9-3 every year and never miss a BCS game. On the other hand, he could go 9-3 every year and never finish higher than third in his own division staying at Oklahoma.

I’m not saying it’s a slam dunk or that he should go, I’m just saying I can see why he would be interested.

I haven't kept up with Oklahoma but I wonder if there hasn't been

some rumblings of discontent in Norman. He has built the reputation as a choker in BCS games and I imagine some are getting sick of it. This last season couldn’t have gone over really well.

by UAinPHOENIX on Nov 30, 2009 9:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

if they felt that way, they’d be way off. Stoops brought them out of the cellar… and while there is the Bowden catastrophe cautioning against allowing a coach to rest on his laurels, they’re only a year removed from a nat’l championship appearance so if the question is “what have you done for me lately,” well, the answer is quite a lot. yeah he’s choked a few times but has still gotten them there more than the vast majority of other programs. that’s not to say there aren’t folks who agree with you, because as we are aware college football can bring out the worst in some people, but it’s not warranted in my mind.

that being said Notre Dame’s schedule + special BCS treatment could make success there an easy lay for someone like Stoops, as ots has indicated, so I guess in one regard it might make sense…

More from Schefter...
“One NFL source goes so far as to say he believes an agreement is all but a formality, with some details, likely including the Oklahoma contract, still to be resolved.”

It sounds to me like Schefter is pretty dang confident with this deal.

Makes sense to me

Of all the big names being thrown around, which one has the ego big enough to think that he could turn ND back into a national powerhouse? That’s right—Bob Stoops.

by M. Johnson Defender on Nov 30, 2009 8:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

As was mentioned earlier,

it appears that money was always going to be an issue. Stoops has a huge bonus coming up and if ND is willing to pay that, it would definitely be a tempting offer.

by rugman11 on Nov 30, 2009 9:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

does anyone else wonder when Chris Peterson

is going to be involved in these kind of discussions? i mean seriously, if you just swapped the uniforms of Notre Dame and Boise St. over the last 5 years, we’d of seen Boise St in the national title game twice and the BCS at least 4 times. Then if you considered what would happen if you gave Peterson ND’s players and a whole season to coach them?

Chris Peterson is going to win a shit load of games before his career is over. He might be the only person i can think of who could conceivably pose a challenge to JoPa’s record.

Someone will come calling eventually...

… but I think the stories of Houston Nutt and Dan Hawkins have served as sufficient warning to any Boise State coach that it’s not really a great idea to jump on a job that is pretty much a mid-level job in whatever conference you are joining.

I imagine Peterson probably doesn’t make that same mistake. I imagine he’ll stick around at Boise unless an elite job comes calling. Of course, though, Oklahoma may very well do just that if Stoops leaves.

Plus...

…Boise has shown plenty of commitment to becoming a real football power (increased funding, facility upgrades, etc) so if you’re Petersen that “elite” job may already be the one you have.

Coach's Salary

I think the one thing that has really changed in college football is that you really do not have to to to an elite college football program (Alabama, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, USC, etc…) to be a really high paid coach. If you are a division IA coach you are almost certainly going to be making a million dollars.

Even programs that you would not think of as elite programs pay their coaches very well (SMU, Rutgers, Ole Miss, Missouri, etc… are all amongst the top 25 in coach’s salary).

Obviously there are still things you can only get if you go to an elite program (national titles, prestige, etc…). I remember reading an article talking about when Coach Bryant left and went to Alabama how drastically it changed his standard of living, that is just not the case anymore.

by Kenny483 on Dec 1, 2009 6:52 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I can't see the appeal of leaving Boise

(outside of money which is obviously a big motivator) to go to a program that isn’t going to be challenging for BCS titles. At this stage he can stay at Boise and go to BCS bowl games more often than he would at some school that may be in a BCS conference but has virtually no chance of making a BCS bowl. The Oklahoma job, however, would probably be a good fit for both parties.
