University of Alabama tight end Colin Peek was withheld from contact at Wednesday's practice while recovering from a knee sprain. Peek practiced Monday and Tuesday in a regular jersey, but was in a black jersey Wednesday, which signifies non-contact status.

Tuscaloosa News: Peek withheld from contact

I tell you, things are looking bleak on the Peek front for this Saturday. He's in a non-contact jersey today and still not working out with the team. Hopefully he can really turn the corner in the next day or two, and we're getting so late in the week that even if he can play, it's clear that he will be nowhere near 100%. Michael Williams, get ready.

Smelley...

…needs to step up his game. He is a decent receiving threat.

he just can't block for shit

Williams is our blocking guy…reminds me of McCall and Walker from last year

Preston Dial...

…is the TE/HB that has really stepped up his game as far as blocking. He was a major factor in Mark’s final TD against SC. There’s a reason he’s been in games much more than Smelley even though he hasn’t caught many passes. It prolly helps that in practice he goes up against Ro. Ivan Maisel in his ESPN article about Ro said:

“Crimson Tide H-back Preston Dial makes room for Heisman candidate Mark Ingram. Dial knows how to open holes. It is his station in life to block McClain three days a week. He’s considering an easier line of work, like being Brock Lesnar’s sparring partner.”

Can Brian Vogler suit up?

Brian, we’ve got a man down. Get a uniform and meet us on the field.

MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

Peek is invaluable...

…but I’m not worried about his absence. There’s a difference between having two weeks to prepare to fill his shoes and having two minutes, as was the case last time we took the field. Peek can rest up for Auburn…or Florida. We’re bigger than one player. We’ll be fine.

Peek out

is a big hit to our offense. I do not look for any of our other guys to step it up and be Colin Peek Junior. What I do look for is for us to play Williams most of the time for blocking purposes. As Saban would say, “It is what it is.”

On the plus side it looks like Upchurch may actually be 100% the first time in a long time. I would not be surprised to see us use Upchurch out of the backfield on longer wheel routes. Anyway, Upchurch could be a factor in the red zone too. Sometimes when he gets going he just smells to goal line and bowls over people to get in the end zone.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

i'm having flashbacks of the VT game

Upchurch is a sadist who loves to inflict pain, and he really gets off when he murders a safety and scores a TD at the same time…. thats my kinda RB.

welcome to the SEC kiffykins...

What about Brad Smelley

He done well at the position before.

by Crimsoncaller on Nov 4, 2009 9:50 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The problem...

The problem is simply that Smelley is a completely different type of player than Peek, and thus he isn’t a suitable replacement for that particular role. Trying to force Smelley to play Peek’s role would be like trying to have Maze play Julio Jones’ role. Again, it’s just two very different type of players — even though they are labeled in the same position category — performing two very different roles, and the two just aren’t interchangeable.

And as an aside, without trying to overly criticize, Smelley hasn’t really played particularly well this year even in his role.

For better or for worse, it’s up to Michael Williams. He’s the back-up to Peek, and he’s really the only guy with the physical build that can fill his shoes. We’re going to sink or swim with him, so hopefully he plays well.

Correct.

Smelley is really an H-back type player and Williams is more a TE as is Peek. It will be Williams if Peek can’t go.

And Smelley, to me, has not has a good a year catching the ball as he did last year.

Per today's B'ham News...

…CNS says that Williams has gotten most of the snaps at TE the past two weeks….

Bad news...

We’ll still win. I bet our receivers will have big days.
