Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Chris Low relays information from his SEC contacts that say Meyer will receive some form of punishment under the new "Kiffin Rule" for criticizing officials who did not call a late hit on Tebow in the UF-UGA game.

A suspension for 1/2 a game sounds about right, don't you think?

I think they will fine Urban

$100 and tell him to be careful in the future or it will be $200 next time.

LISTEN- No coach is going to suffer by this rule unless it is Nick Saban who hopefully is too smart to say anything public. But let Saban utter a hint of critisim and it is a 2 game suspension. Fortunately Saban is generally not the kind to critisize the officals publically, although under the right conditions I think just about any coach, including Saint Richt, could say something.

But after all, if the refs really blew it, like they did in the LSU-UGA game or the UF-Arky game how can a coach contain himself?

But after all, if the refs really blew it, like they did in the LSU-UGA game…

At least that game was called evenly. Same stupid penalty for both teams. FLA-Arky and Fla-Miss St. were atrocious though.

Disagree

The call on Scott was legit. You can’t go point at the fans. The call on Green was horseshit.

The rule is stupid anyway.

I'm wrong all the time.

The rule is dumber than a dumb thing.

The whole “pointing” thing is stupid too. I don’t even remember it, but who knows if he was just throwing his hands up in “I’m a badass fashion.” It’s like when Verne went bonkers after DJ did the Gator chomp and the “cut it out” thing and he accused him of a “throat slashing gesture.” Nobody’s a mind reader and this stupidity of calling this crap should cease.

I disagree if nothing else for the time left on the clock. Yeah, UGA got a makeup call, but there was barely anytime to do anything with it.

I don’t really buy this — the SEC doesn’t have a beef with Saban. The media does and our opponent’s fans do, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the SEC take issue with Saban. The rule was put in place because of Lane Kiffin — and you can bet that if he snipes at the officials again, he’s going to get suspended and the university is going to get smacked with a pretty big fine.

At this point, Kiffin is just thumbing his nose at the SEC and the SEC doesn’t really have much else they can do besides hit him hard the next time he screws up, lest they risk losing control of the coaches.

But, really, this rule doesn’t impact Saban. I don’t recall him ever saying anything about officiating and I can’t imagine why he would, especially now in light of this new rule.

I'm wrong all the time.

"...lest they risk losing control of the coaches"...

See, that’s the problem with having an a$$ like Kitten in the league…Slive shouldn’t have to worry about ‘losing control of the coaches’…their supposed to be grown men, for Pete’s sake (not for your sake, of course, Pete, but the generic ‘Pete’ who generally shows up in this cliche).

completely agree with holiday here...

there is a process for making the conference aware of problems a team might have with the officiating a given game. i’m absolutely sure saban uses this instead of press conferences to make his concerns known. because, in the end, the goal is to eliminate bad refereeing so you can play the game, not to make a show out of something that has pissed you off so you cam garner fan favor. the best way to get fan favor in alabama is to win.

or a hard buttslap from Percy Harvin

MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

Actually,

Meyer’s right in this one. It was a late hit and should have been called. There were a couple calls that should have been made. The “Kiffin Rule” needs to apply only when the coach is incorrect.

Can the Kiffin Rule be amended so that coaches/players can show dissatisfaction when they have genuinely been wrong? Kinda like a challenge flag: if you throw it and are right, you won’t get punished for throwing it.

No

The reason this rule exists is this: there is a process for dealing with officiating errors. That process does not involve bitching at press conferences. It involves watching game tape and lodging a formal complaint. Being right or wrong has nothing to do with it. Absolutely nothing is gained by whining to the media about those big bad officials it’s all heat and no light and serves to smear the conference.

Besides, there’s some debate as to whether Meyer got the rule right and, frankly, here’s what I think: if you run a single play-action pass ever, you cannot expect defenses not to hit your QB after he hands the ball off. The rules are designed to protect passers, not blockers, and a blocker is what Tebow was on the play that he got drilled.

Regardless, though, bitching in public is against the rules no matter how right you are.

I'm wrong all the time.

yessir

there’s no finer feeling than sacking a QB, but a close second is when you put him on his ass right after he handed it off.

welcome to the SEC kiffykins...

The reason

I think the SEC would put the hammer down on Saban is because he is the perfect traget. Well, Kiffin is the perfect target except he coaches at UT. And there is a rule “The SEC does not hurt UT.”

The SEC likewise will not hurt Florida because everybody loves Tebow. Seriously, why had Meyer gotten nothing for his comment. It is the Tebow factor.

But no one in the SEC or the media for that matter loves Bama. They feel we cheat. They feel Saban must be cheating to get all those recruits. I mean the text book thing was a joke as our rebuttal pointed out—but still they came after us because we are Bama. Let Saban say one thing, even something less than Meyer just said and watch what happens.

On the flip side Saban is too smart to do it.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

What evidence do you have that the SEC (the actual conference, not the fans of teams that are in it) has any sort of negative feeling toward ’Bama or Saban?

Lot’s of folks have suggested this, but I have yet to see a single supporting argument for it.

I'm wrong all the time.
