Even coach Nick Saban has expressed concern, saying he wants the offense to be more aggressive, passing more downfield, taking a "guns-a-blazing" approach into a Saturday showdown against coach Les Miles' No. 9 LSU Tigers.
To which Dave Rader laughed.
"Is he talking to Coach Miles, or is he really meaning that?" the two-time former Alabama assistant coach said. "That sounds like a set up, doesn't it?"
Don Kausler, Jr: Inside Alabama
Kausler has a good article up today in the B'ham News talking to three former Tide offensive assistants about our performance on that side of the ball. The Rader comment really stuck out to me because I had kind of thought the same thing throughout the week. If we are really and truly looking to air the ball out this weekend, why in the world are we preaching it to the world all week, knowing good and well the LSU coaching staff is paying close attention? It might not all be a ruse, mind you, but then again...

That's Been
In the back of my mind as well. I’m no expert, but I’m guessing anything said in the media in any manner probably has about .5% of an effect of what happens between the sidelines on Saturday. Still, how bout we just do it, and quit harping on how we plan to do it.

To be honest..
Ive been thinking the same thing. Is all this talk about going deep just a set up? It would make sense. If the coaching staff has little confidence in Gmac to actually do it, why not make people think we will..I don’t know. It kinda feels like when you were in middle school and you liked a girl but where to afraid to ask her out yourself, so you sent a friend to find out if she’s interested…wait…im not sure if that analogy fits at all..

no way does saban open it up
Why would he? Bama just has to run the ball and play defense. There is no need for Bama to try to “open it up.” It is also very much against Saban’s style in my opinion.

The question is:
Does Saban think he can get inside of Miles head? I don’t think normal psychological games work on people like Les Miles who are oblivious to the obvious. Miles would hear Saban talking about “guns-a-blazing” and think he is saying Alabama is going to run from “the pistol” and not “the shot gun.”
I think we will mainly run it mixing in the safe pass to keep them honest. Kinda like we have been doing only hopefully finish drives with better play calling in the red zone. I’d be shocked if we went deep more than once or twice in this game.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

It's a little of both
I don’t expect us to go all Texas Tech on them, but we have got to find a way to effectively stretch the field in the passing game. Right now we are putting so much on Ingram that, God forbid he goes down, we are in a bind. Anyone can see that the passing game has got to improve back to what it was in the first 6 games for us to have any shot at winning a championship.
It’s going to be tough to break any kind of long runs without at least a successful shot or two down field and consistent 10-20 yard production from our QB and receivers. I think with LSU’s front 7 we should be able to buy enough time passing wise for Greg to get the ball out to our receivers. We haven’t seen much of Maze, McCoy, or Alexander lately, so getting them involved will be key. Spreading the field. Let them load the box up to stop Ingram, I’ll take our starting four receivers in one on one matchups with their secondary all day. When they spread out, it’s heisman time for #22. Certainly the bread and butter of our offense is Ingram, but without the mid-to-deep ball, we will be in trouble.
Further, Greg was doing a phenomenal job of making reads early in the year. The past few games, however, he is locking on to Julio too much; I don’t know if it is him feeling pressured too soon and not taking time to make those reads, or if he was still, as was suggested on this site, suffering from the hip pointer at the end of the Arkansas game. Either way, we need a big game from him Saturday. 250 yards +.

Another thing
Some of Fuller’s observations echo those of critical fans.
“Earlier in the season, it looked to me – now I’m just a fan, I’m not a coach – they tried to force the ball to the big receiver, Julio,” he said. “People are now doubling up, and I see where they’re still trying to throw the ball to him.”
Alabama has scored touchdowns on only 16 of 37 red-zone opportunities.
Really? I remember the ball being thrown around a LOT early in the year, in fact Greg said as much that he promised everyone would get a chance. I also remember this being a reason we were successful with the passing game, and a reason so many people were praising the QB and the coaching. Jones, Hanks, Maze, McCoy, Peek, etc. were all getting their hands on it. Am I delusional?

Saban? Deceptive?
He would neverrrr do something like that! That just goes against everything we know about him… ;-)
I can’t wait for Saturday, Les Miles is in trouble whether we air it out or not. Personally, I hope we stick to what we’re good at and do take a few more aggressive shots downfield. As long as those are not careless shots and we limit turnovers and LSU field position we should be rockin’.

Play calling..............
Play calling has to be better…….. throwing 2 passes inside the 10? Why not just give it to Cody…he could carry 5or6 into the endzone from the 10.

Wait
Maybe he is saying this to Les Miles to make Les think that he is saying this to trick him so Les plays up on the run and then boom we go long. :P

Maybe
Coach Saban believes that we are simply better than LSU. We have better players and better coaches. And if we go out and execute the way we should, it doesn’t matter what Les Miles knows, doesn’t know or thinks he knows. We will win no matter what they do.

Don't know if you're joking...
but I think you’re exactly right. I’ve often wondered if Saban has played games with injury news, or about what he wants to work on, or things like that. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any. It’s always turned out that he’s been honest or correct. He’s honest about our weaknesses, what he wants to work on for the next week, what we need to do better. I think you’re right in that he doesn’t see it as putting him at a disadvantage. I mean, he’s not going to broadcast his position changes on AM/FM radio, but he think it’s pretty obvious that we need to improve our passing game, and he doesn’t care if you know that he knows it. Plus, I would say that he’s most honest when he’s being reactionary, like after a game. He said we couldn’t be as risk “adversive” (God I hate it when he says that…averse! averse!) in the offensive game plan any more. So, I think he wants to do it, I think we’ll try it, and I think he doesn’t care who knows it’s coming. It’s just like last year, where every single commentator said “You know exactly what Bama is going to do, but you still can’t stop them.” That’s what we’re going for.

No wasted effort...
I he is saying something to the media it is because he has a purpose behind the statement. It’s kind of like they say about coaches and GMs before the NFL draft, you tell if they are lying because there lips will be moving.

What he said is what he means......
I can’t see CNS trying to get into a battle of wits with a crazy man like the mad hatter. How many of us actually even thought that we would see Bama run the wildcat formation at all this fall, lets be honest here now, NOT a single one of us. So what makes anyone think that CNS won’t open it up and go with no backs and no huddle and push the ball down the field.
I have listened to this man for 3 years now, and one thing he’s does not do is waste time or words. If he says it, he will do it. Go get’em coach, aight!

I don't think Saban's statements were subterfuge
he don’t shiv. He tells you what he’s done, why we did it and sometimes what we’re going to do…it’s up to the other team to stop it.
