New Blog: The Boxing Bulletin for Boxing Fans!

I’ve been managing and trying to take care of my body and doing everything right. I’m ready for this game. I’ve been struggling with (the ankle) here and there but I finally got it to where I got my moves back and I’ve been able to go out and show what I can do.

Whatever my role is, I’ll be ready if my number’s called.

TideSports: Bama’s Upchurch eager to play against LSU this year

While the injury to Colin Peek continues to be both a disappointment and a concern, the good news is that Roy Upchurch looks to finally be 100% after the high ankle sprain he suffered in the FIU game. This one is big for the Tide because Upchurch is highly valuable in pass protection, and good things always happen when we get the ball in his hands. Hopefully we'll see him producing this Saturday.

Honestly...

…the timing couldn’t be better. When he’s healthy, Roy Upchurch is one of the most valuable offensive weapons we have. As fine a player as Peek is, I believe that Upchurch is a more dangerous threat. Here’s hoping he has a career game Saturday.

Couldn't have said it better myself

Upchurch really is a weapon, great timing!

Upchurch

being 100% is a big deal. We haven’t needed him to date as we have won every game but this is our biggest game and we really need him now.

After this game, if we win, we probably ought to rest Roy until ATL just to make sure he is healthy then.

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

With the frequency of Roy Upchurch's injuries

I almost wonder if he’s too buff for his own good. I say that because, as anyone on here with heavy weightlifting/bodybuilding experience will tell you, Roy always seems to tweek and sprain his muscles and ligaments. A lot of these things are minor injuries that take forever to heal, but they’re also exacerbated by hardcore weightlifting (which football players do, Roy especially). I was at my strongest in 1999, benching close to 400 and squatting close to 500 and I remember the harder I lifted and the more ripped I got the easier I got minor injuries.

This is another reason why guys who use steroids used to pull muscles and sprain ankles so easily. They literally built more muscle than their tendons, ligaments, and bones (which do not grow after a certain point) could handle. I’m not suggesting Upchurch is on juice (but I’m not naive enough to deny the possibility because I’ve seen firsthand what guys at this level do), but I do think he could have too much muscle for his bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons.

Just a theory.

I like your theory

and I’d say there is some evidence that when you build a body beyond normal then things can much easier breakdown.

I played two sports on the college level, and I did weight training, but I must not have tried hard enough because it never changed my body mass, shape, etc. Yet in 4 years I never got injured. A good friend on my team put on about 30 lbs of muscle and then proceed to sprain his ankle and knees and miss most of two seasons.

And I don’t think Upchurch is on steroids, but you really never know. I do think he wants to play at the next level very badly.

I'm sure you were working hard

it’s just that some people maintain rather than build.

The problem with weightlifting is that the tendons and ligaments remain the same size (or if they grow a little, it’s not proportionate to the muscle being built). A guy with a big frame, with thick shoulders and thick wrists, can put on muscle safely because he has bigger tendons and ligaments than a skinner guy. A guy with a lighter frame can put on muscle but it’s seemingly harder on his tendons and joints.

Naturally, I should be about 180 pounds (I’m 6’2). From weightlifting I’ve gone as high as 235 (I’m currenlty 218). The sucky thing for me is that the more weight I gain, even though I have less than 8% body fat, the worse my joints and ligaments feel.

Totally agree.......

As a 45 yr old that works out almost everyday, I can tell you that the guys that build to big seem to get injured more than guys who stay at less weight and strain. And, I think the strain of bigger weights has a lot to do with it also. I’m 5’!0" 215, but the guys that are20 to 35 lbs bigger than me seem to have more knee and now at my age, back problems because of going to heavy.

On the Roy situation though I’m a big fan of Upchurch because he runs so hard and seems to play with all heart. I would have loved to see what he could have done if he’d have stayed healthy. Good luck Roy, and run over a couple tigers for us all!!!

Do you know anything about shoulder injuries from benching and working the deltoids? I bit the dust snowboarding last Christmas, separated my shoulder, waited for it to pop back into place, and then continued working out about a week later. I have had pain between my collarbone, inside of my shoulder, when benching so I’ve resorted to doing limited weight (between 225 and 250) and push ups. The pain feels sort of like tendinitis, but one bodybuilder told me it could be an AC joint (from the sound of it and if that was/is the case, good luck because that takes forever to heal).

AC sprains don’t heal without surgery. There are several degrees of sprains from literally stretching the ligaments that hold your collar bone in place with your shoulder to completely tearing them, although the pain will eventually go away with or without surgery. I suffered a 3rd degree AC joint sprain (complete tear) playing 1-AA football and required surgery. It still bothers me some but its much better than it was.

That's what I'm afraid of

I think I’m always going to have pain if I continue working out.

I never have injuries...

…but I do have a hard time finding clothes that fit, as you can tell from my pic…

How's your range of motion?

Can't say for sure.....

I through my shoulder out playing softball and it has been a nagging injury ever since. What I did was basically what you did, I cut back on the amount of weight and added reps. I also changed up my fly routine and the motion that I was lifting in, and by doing so I can now do much more weight with dumbbells than ever before and got rid of most but not all of the shoulder discomfort.
As you get older the bench press becomes less and less your friend. I still do it, but not nearly as much. And I certainly don’t do the max outs anymore.

Yeah, my range of motion and ability to throw a baseball

has pretty much disappeared as a result of benching so much in my 20’s. My rotator cuff is probably shot. I found this out the hard way when I coached my school’s freshmen baseball team last year and I tried to pitch batting practice.

During football season, I run all my defense’s pursuit drills and I’ve found that the less I bench, the better I can sling the ball around. If I work out in the morning I can’t throw for crap by the time practice starts.

I know what you mean about the dumbbells. They help with the shoulder pain. It sucks to feel limited in what you can do, though. The older I get the more my body hurts.
