Basketball team beats Montevallo. Rah.
Crimson Tide romps in Grant's exhibition debut
We didn't actually learn very much from last night's game -- the Falcons are Division II and it was an exhibition. (Then again, Syracuse just lost an exhibition to an Div. II school.) The Tide used a size advantage with JaMychal Green (who scored all of his game-high 18 points in the second half) and Justin Knox, a size advantage they won't have against real competition.
The most interesting thing to me is the lineup Grant utilized. It was a three-guard look with Mikhail Torrance, Senario Hillman, and Anthony Brock, with the fronline starters being Green and JUCO transfer Chris Hines. Brock, the team's best long-range shooter, really needed to be in the lineup anyway, and since Torrance is 6-5 they don't lose that much defensively. Hines ahead of Knox is a surprise to me, but we'll see if that holds up.
Four Tide players besides Green scored in double figures, Knox, Hillman, Torrance, and another JUCO, Charvez Davis.

I wish they’d use a different picture for the story…

Yes
It looks like Grant either gave him a flu-shot or is about to mug him.

Someone didn’t watch the pay-per-view commercial. Over. And over. And over. Every break they got.

I am looking forward to this years B-Ball season like no other.
It’s like new life has been pumped into the program. Grant was a great hire IMO. I plan on attending five games that I know of right now. Maybe more depends on whether or not my son has a good time. He’s never been to a Bama Basketball game before. I am really looking forward to taking him. I am so freaking glad Mark is gone. The man could recruit good talent but never held the respect of his players and eventually the fans. Roll Tide Roll heres to a new era in hoops!

Well, the UA women did lose to Div II UNA last night
so maybe we can read something into an exhibition game loss.
I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . . DBT

It kind of sucks though...
…that they chose to play one of their best non-conference games in Mobile.

Thanks
For writing something about the basketball team, looking forward to reading more about those guys this year.

Go Falcons!
I am a Montevallo alum and it is sooo weird when they play against Alabama. Since UM doesn’t have a football team I have never felt wrong in rooting for Alabama, but every other year when we play basketball I feel like I am rooting for one of my children to beat up the other. Very strange feeling.

Im just really excited
About the up tempo play. The past few years our strength has been our athleticism, and Gottfried never took advantage of that. We kept running an offense that was based on good shooting, but we haven’t had good shooters. This year’s team looks similar. Very athletic, but not so great at shooting. Torrance and Brock are really the only ones I would trust to take shots.

Torrance is a spotty, at best, shooter. His strength is in dribble penetration that leads to either a dish, a turnover, or a floater. I think Brock is really the only guy coming back that I’d consider a shooter.

Going to be exciting...
Going to be exciting watching us play this year with our up-tempo style and 40-minute full-court trapping defense. I thought the defense looked good last night and for the most part did what it was designed to do: it forced Montevallo into several turnovers and bad decisions, we picked up several steals deep in their end of the court, and we scored 24 points off turnovers. On the offensive end we were very, very sloppy (24 turnovers, mostly unforced) but hopefully this was just a sign of pre-season rust and nerves and not a sign of things to come.
One note to the original poster—Anthony Brock is no longer our best 3-point shooter. That would be Charvez Davis. I’m not saying that just because he went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc last night, either. Last year playing JuCo ball Davis was third in the nation in made 3-pointers per game, averaging 3.75 made 3s each game (that’s 11 points each game from behind the arc). Not only that, but he did so while shooting at a very efficient rate (41%). Brock is a great shooter as well, but but Davis will emerge as our top 3-point threat very early if he hasn’t already.

I'm just glad...
That we have a coach that will expect defense, defense, and more defense. I love how we trapped, pressed, and played man-to-man last night.
I don’t know what to realistically expect from this team, but I’m back on the bandwagon.

I never...
…left the Bama basketball bandwagon…but it’s nice to have a head coach you can support again….

Gottfried...
And his coaching (or lack thereof) made me not care about the basketball team. I didn’t this is possible, but watching them play under Gottfried made me more frustrated than watching Shula coach football. Call that blasphemy all you want, but I couldn’t see why a good recruiter could be such a bad coach.

That's not...
…blasphemy at all. I think Mike Shula had/has greater potential as a coach in his sport than Mark Gottfried…though I wish them both well.

Gottfried & graduation
As frustrating as it was watching the Gottfried-coached teams, the way he got his kids to go to class and graduate on time made me proud. Even up here in ACC country, where the fans brag about the high-quality schools, there are plenty of idiots and thugs on all of the teams. Mark kept his kids straight, they went to class, and they were generally good folks. I hope Coach Grant can keep it going (with better game management, of course).
