Morning Open Thread: Gotta Watch Something...
Not a lot worth watching this morning (Arkansas and SC? Meh.), so I'm taking the dog for a walk and then settling in for numbness 'til 2:30. What are you tolerating watching?

And a lot of cooking and drinking.

Awesome play from UCF's DB to prevent a TD...

What are you reading?
I’ve got some friends that are really into graphic novels (rival fans insert coloring book jokes here:__________) and they’ve been trying to get me into reading them forever. Right now I"m reading:

In terms of books without pictures, I’m about to start:

Yes it is.
I actually want to hear the audio book version as well considering he and Warren Ellis composed music specifically for the audio book version.

heck yes.
I first heard him on the soundtrack of this indie movie called “Until the End of the World” and totally fell in love.
That soundtrack is awesome, by the way

I'm a huge fan as well.
I got to see him play twice last year. Once in Greece and once in DC. This is the prize ticket stub of my collection:

It was pretty epic.
One of the best shows I’ve ever been to. The name of the venue is in yellow and is “Moni Lazariston” which translates as “Lazarus Monastery.” Yes, on the Dig Lazarus Dig tour I saw him play in a de-sanctified monastery called “Lazarus Monastery.” It was the perfect place given the theme/imagery of that record. He was loving it too. Here’s a great picture from the show:

Nice.
Make sure and check out the park across the street from The Acropolis with Socrates’ jail cell. It’s kind of unremarkable, but the park is a godsend in Athens if you hike up to the top of the hill. It’s gotta be on the quietest places in the city and it’s an amazing view of The Acropolis. Nobody was up there when I went either. Totally peaceful.

Yes, this is the sort of thing I read for fun. Alternating with Bill Simmons’ (very long) book.

That's cool.
I read all sorts of historical stuff that most people would consider dry. I’m slowly working my way through a collection called Balkan As Metaphor. Check out this super sexy book description:
This challenging anthology is based on the premise that geographic identity conveys a rich and revealing intellectual coherence, i.e., that the concept of the “Balkans” represents a wealth of values, attitudes, and policies demanding careful explication. Edward Said’s influential Orientalism successfully applied this approach to Western thinking about the Middle East, but this anthology, like Maria Todorova’s Imagining the Balkans, interprets “Balkanism” as a perception both of outsiders and of peoples in the region. The approach, for example, claims that the consequences of war and “re-territorialization” have worked to “constitute” the nation, that “ferocious competition over minor differences” is a source of group identity, and the Byzantine legacy of “ambivalence” remains a feature of national consciousness. Better-known propositions among the chapters include Roumanian rejection of a “Balkan” for a “European” identity. Editors Bjelic’ (Univ. of Southern Maine) and Savic’ (Univ. of Belgrade) have also included such diverse themes as sexuality in Serbia and the “actuality” of theorist Carl Schmidt in understanding the war in Kosovo. For some contributors, the use of postmodern vocabulary seems less a source of insight than a badge of relevance, but the volume is valuable for area specialists and graduate students. Recommended for larger academic libraries.

I should preface my recommendation
with the proviso that West luvs her the Serbs, hates the Austrians, Turks, Croats, Hungarians… Other than those biases, it is a UNICEF love fest. And its nearly 1000 pages. I skipped the last 300 pages about how great the Serbs are.
She does not include Greece in her conception of the Balkans though and that seems to be a subject of interest to you. Venomously bitchy and excessively erudite.

I'm all about The Balkans in general...
…I was originally going to go to Macedonia, Serbia and Bulgaria as well (perhaps with a dip into Albania), but wound up having such a dang good time in Greece I ended up just staying there my whole trip (meeting cool local people that put you up and feed you for free will do that.)
Considering how long ago that book was written, it’s bound to be crammed full of bias.

That title
“I See A Darkness”
Interesting choice for the book title – that’s the name of a Will Oldham song Johnny Cash covered a few years back. I didn’t particularly like his cover I must admit, but I rarely like covers.
The original though is one the most gut-wrenching songs of all time

Oh...
…and FWIW…Johnny Cash covered Nick Cave’s “The Mercy Seat” and while awesome, isn’t nearly as intense as Cave’s version. After Cash died, Cave wrote a tribute song called “Let the Bells Ring” that’s quite awesome.

Terry Grant out?
Per Gentry Estes’ Twitter, Terry Grant is not on the pregame roster. He has been limited in practice this week due to a muscle strain, so apparently he is not going to play today.
Dre Kirkpatrick did return to practice later in the week, I think, so we should probably see him playing today.
I imagine we’ll see Julio or Trent Richardson returning kicks today in Grant’s place, and likely Julio.
