The Pass Sets up the Run

Isn't it interesting, my fellow Bammers, in that against both Virginia Tech and LSU we used the pass to set up the run and we gained over 450 yards in both games?  I don't have the official numbers in front of me, but I think we threw about fifteen passes in our first twenty plays and while we didn't gain massive amounts of yards in the first quarter, the strategy worked well as the game progressed.  Against Virginia Tech we also used some surprising playcalling early (the Wildcat, among other things) that gained some yards but slowly took its toll on the Virginia Tech defense.

Today's gameplan against LSU operated in a similar fashion, and the game paralleled the effort against Virginia Tech in several ways.  We rallied in the fourth quarter, we outgained our opponent by more than 200 yards, and we physically pounded on them until they gave way.  Both LSU and Virginia Tech gave tremendous efforts and both teams proved themselves to be worthy adversaries, losing games that could have very easily gone their way despite the disparity in yardage.

Still, this is the second notable time that we used a heavy dose of Greg McElroy passing to move the ball and force a fast defense to cover large chunks of field.  By doing this, we had them running all over the place, which wore them down, and we also were able to run the ball against Nickle packages.

Anyway, just sharing how much I liked the offensive gameplan today.  We missed some scoring opportunities, but just like the Virginia Tech game (and the Mark Wahlberg character in Fear), we kept banging and banging until we broke through the wall.

Hats off to LSU.  They brought it today.  And hats off to our guys for playing with a lot of heart in an emotional, physical game against a great rival.

McElroy aggrevates me like a stupid girlfriend...

He’ll overthrow a wide open receiver on one play and then put the ball on a dime the next…if he could be more consistent…successfully consistent, then no one would be talking about our offensive “troubles.”

“I like em with big t*ts and fat asses/ educated, so i can bust off on they glasses….”

he was a man of contradictions, like so many of the great men of the arts. a paradox of sorts.

Yeah,

he sucks. I mean, he’s only had 11 TDs with 4 INTs and a passer rating of 132.56 as a first year starter. He’s not even going to win the Heisman this year. How lame. I will still think he sucks when he leads us to our first national championship in 17 years, and then repeats it the next year. Bench him before we have too much success! I beg you, Coach Saban!

Haha...

Perhaps I over-overdid it. I think the point came across, though. Or maybe I should put another layer of sarcasm on there just to make sure…

Was there sarcasm in that reply?

No, there wasn't any sarcasm at all...

I would NEVER do that. Not in a MILLION years. I meant EVERYTHING I said. And for emphasis, OF COURSE there was no sarcasm in that reply.

about halfway through the first quarter...

…I started paying close attention to the called pass routes and play calling. It seemed to me we were just making their secondary run, to set them up for the second half gut check run fest.

LSU fought hard...

… but in the end, we were just WAAYYYY too physical for them!! Their guys were falling like rain drops have fell here the last few months! I got tired of em dragging the game on and stopping the clock for them to lay on our grass then get up holding their arm as they jogged off the field.. But it was a great game! Glad to see McElroy be able to gain some confidence! Oh, how bout that Julio TD!! That was awesome! I knew he was real fast but he hit the nos when he turned that corner!! It was way faster in person than on tv! ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!

I was so happy....

…to see Julio get the TD. Not only for the obvious reason that it put BAMA ahead to stay but for Julio personally. You know he felt terrible about the dropped past that would have prevented the safety and also because he was apparently the 12th man in the huddle when the penalty was called. It looked like Saban was ragging him pretty hard for that. My impression of Julio is that he is a consummate team player and wanted badly to make up for the mistakes. maybe that provided an extra burst of adrenalin going down the sideline but nobody was going to catch him! Way to go Julio!

by AtlBamaGuy on Nov 8, 2009 9:47 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah i pretty much creamed in pants when he broke that play open

based on what i’ve read and seen, Julio is a total team first guy, you know he felt he had do something after those 2 mistakes, not for his own glory or whatever, but to redeem himself to his teammates. and the O line did great on that play too, carpenter has had some slip ups this year too, he hasn’t been nearly as solid as Andre was, but on that screen he was everything we needed and more. I couldn’t be happier for either of those two dudes…

okay i’m gonna roll a blunt, re-watch the game, and then take sole possession of 1st place in my fantasy league… it’s a good day to be a BAMA fan!

welcome to the SEC kiffykins...

I loved this gameplan...

We scored a pretty good amount of points, and could have scored 40+ with perfect execution in the first half. If we had come out with a conservative gameplan, we probably would’ve lost, but thankfully we have a smart OC and a smart head coach. Even though we were 8-0, they didn’t let those results get to their heads. They knew they had to make some changes, and they did. I’m proud of McElroy, even though he made some mistakes, and I suspect he’ll get better as he gets more in-game practice in the five-wide formation. I hope we keep passing to set up the run for the rest of the season. We’ve turned a corner at just the right time in the season. Great game.

I loved this gameplan

My God, my God, finally a blog where intelligent fans exist….crimsontsunami, what you just said (DEAD SERIOUS HERE), has been my mantra for a long time (and apparently Saban’s too)….I’ve seen too many blogs where “just run and forget the pass” mindset prevails….Gee, I sorta remember Emmitt Smith and Roger Craig talking about how their teams (Cowboys and 49ers respectively) used the PASS to set up the RUN consistently….Hhhm, 7 Super Bowl victories using that formula—guess it works. Same fans RIPPED any blogger who EVER questioned ANYTHING GMac did, yet praised Saban for being great coach, after HE voiced concerns over QB play. GMac should be fine, and on the off chance that he plays poorly enough to not win us an NC, 21-2 in last 23 games—I’LL STILL TAKE IT!!!! Actually, this year’s SEC CG somewhat reminds me of the 1993 NFC CG, in that that game was actually the Super Bowl (everyone knew winner of Dallas/San Fran would win the SB). Besides, you give Saban a month to prepare, I don’t know that it will matter much who he played in an NC game….Now just focus on Miss St, Chatt and Burners and GET US THERE!!!!!!!!!
