Is Texas the best?

I try to be reasonable, which might sound like a load to some of you, but I do try.  I know Texas returned many players from the team that won the Fiesta Bowl in the 2008/9 season, and I know Colt McCoy was a finalist for the Heisman.  I know head coach in waiting Will Muschamp is as respected a defensive coordinator as one will find.  I know Texas has the top ranked defense and the opportunity to easily sign twenty four star prospects without leaving their state.  I know they score lots of points and their games are competitively over by the third quarter.  I respect the Big 12 and ignore her critics because I don't think playing in a certain conference automatically makes one team better than a team that happens to play in a conference deemed inferior.

But I have to question the Longhorns' competition, both prior and remaining.

Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State are their best victories.  The thing is, Oklahoma is 5-4, Oklahoma State is 7-2 (but played without two of their best offensive players), and Texas Tech is 6-3.  Those teams are good but not great.  Longhorn fans would eagerly mention the records of Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and South Carolina as being comparable, and they'll probably throw in LSU and Virginia Tech also if either one of those teams finish the season with four losses.  Maybe I am too biased toward the Crimson Tide, but I am the only one thinking Texas is largely unproven?  Secondly, with a victory over either a mediocre Nebraska team or a below average Kansas State in the Big 12 title game, is Texas deserving of a spot in the BCS championship?

I think it is

almost impossible to compare Big 12 teams to SEC teams because the defenses in the SEC are just tougher than the defenses in the Big 12. That is my gut feeling but there is no way to prove it.

Texas looks like the best team playing OU & TT. But, Bama nor UF played OU or TT so who knows?

I think IF Bama would to get a shot at Texas in the BCS we would have our hands full with Colt McCoy because he can take off running like Jefferson did on Sat. For whatever reason we always seem to have a hard time with QB’s who just take off running such as McCoy of Tebow. Maybe it is because we play a lot of man and have our backs turned etc. I think we would match up better against a Sam Bradford type as we can pressure those guys with the blitz.

Also, I’m not sure we have anyone who can cover Shipley man on man, but maybe Javy can.

So I think we would have a hard time with Texas’ offense. I don’t know how we would do against their D. Their D looks good, but I’m not sure about the competition. My gut feeling is that we could run the ball on them, hold onto the ball and keep our D rested and McCoy off the field.

If we played I’d expect a tight, defensive game like LSU. If we could get that type of game I like our team in the 4th qt. I just feel we may be deeper and in better shape.

Nevertheless against UF & Texas (if we get there) we wil be playing a team with a great D plus a QB that is better than our QB. It is hard to win those games.

However, first things first. We will have our hands full with MSU and if we don’t beat them then who cares about Texas?

I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.

Bear in mind

I’m not trying to look ahead as much as I’m looking at the top five teams in the country right now. Of the big three, Texas might be the best, but it’s so hard to gauge how good they are because they haven’t really been tested outside of the Oklahoma game.

a 4 loss OK team,

mind you, and they struggled to put up points against them. Granted, that is a major rivalry game, but I would consider our defense superior to OK’s

I agree.

Now please say that loud enough for all the people here in Texas to hear you, cause they sure aren’t listening to me…

They never listen.

Cuz they’re in TEXAS, and ARE TEXAS and all.

Texas isn't that good...

Like Oklahoma before them, they will get exposed.

To be honest though...

Last year’s OU squad did a very good job against the Gators. They self-destructed a lot. That said, I don’t think anyone was seriously worried about UF losing it.

I think the Gators could've made it a lot worse on OU,

but you’re right – OU played pretty well and they didn’t really get “exposed.” The Big 12 is a decent conference, and, if we get there, it should be a tough game against Texas. However, Texas doesn’t have the offense to beat our defense, nor do they have the defense to stop McElroy, Ingram, Jones, Maze, Hanks, Peek and on and on. But the main “reason” I think Alabama would beat them (maybe by a lot) in the national championship is because we are Alabama and it is the national championship game. We want it, we need it, we will work our butts off to get it. It’s our time for glory. That’s why right now we’re the most dangerous (and best) team in the land. Sorry Texas – the stars at night are blocked by crimson clouds of doom, deep in the heart of Pasadena.

How crazy would it be

if both Florida and Alabama lost a game prior to the SEC championship. How would that change the final picture?

I think Cincy would overcome TCU

with the three game grist mill coming up.

I...

…do not think it really would. It would be hard to argue that there would really be a better one loss team than Florida and Alabama. The best one loss team currently is Georgia Tech, but no way they would be ranked higher than Alabama or Florida. It really helped once Oregon got its second loss, cause with their schedule they would have had an argument, and when Iowa finally lost.

The only team that might have a shot would be an undefeated Cincinnati team, but they have probably the toughest stretch of any unbeaten team.

You are right

we have not played Texas since Jan. 1, 1982 when Coach Bryant was still coaching and our all time record is 0 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie. Furthermore, Texas is the only team we have played four or more times that we have never beaten.

Sooner or later we need to play and beat these guys. But, don’t take what UF did to OU LAST YEAR as any sign of what may happen this year. UF is worse, and Texas is better than last year.

Espn

Today two of their guys were talking about the (slim) possibilty of Cincy winning out and playing in the MNC over TX. Basically looking at Texas’s schedule, and then looking at Cincy’s and realizing with the BIG 12 being down, Cincy may have a more impressive Win column.

Never happen.

If Texas wins out and does not get invited over Cincy the BCS is through. I’m telling you there will be a rebellion.

If that's what it takes

for the BSC to fall apart, then I’m all for it. I agree that it will probably never happen, but look at how screwy the rankings are this week:

USC is ranked higher than Oregon. Oregon demolished them just a week ago, they’re both 2 loss teams, and Oregon even has a better PAC 10 record.

LSU went up a spot in the rankings for “a good loss.” I get that their only losses are to the Number 1 and 2 teams. And I get that Iowa lost, but how does a team lose a game and get ranked higher the next week?

I always like seeing people scream "down with the BCS"

but, as is the case with politics, I never see anyone offering a rational opposing solution. What would you replace the BCS with that would be just as effective?
P.S. hope that didn’t sound like a personal attack, nor was it in any way intended to be, I’m just curious as to what you would replace it with. However, if you take Mike Leach’s approach of lunacy and offer a 64 team playoff, I will reach through my computer and strangle you :)

There's no way of knowing, unfortunately...

Texas is good. You can’t go undefeated unless you’re good. But are they better than TCU? I have no idea. Are they even better than LSU? Don’t know. My response would be: You never know. They might be a great team. But they are largely unproven. And as for them deserving a shot at the title, I’d say yes if they go undefeated, but I can’t really justify it, because TCU is sitting there undefeated as well.

I want to see us play Texas.....

I think their defense is good, and it would be a great game. It would also give us old guys a chance to exercise so of the longhorn demons from the past. We have been robbed in a couple of games that we played them back in the 70’s and it is very hard to swallow the fact that we have never beat them.
So, as for me and my house, I say, win out longhorns, then let Bama close the door on that part of our history and bring home a BSC Championship.

I don't mind bad news, and I don't mind good news, but I can't stand surprises! Coach Nick Saban

On the Field is the Only Solution

Must decide on the field…If Bama beats Florida, then the answer will be known a month later….I would say this though….I would rather play Texas than Oklahoma, and here is why.

Texas’ run game is hurting and McCoy is their leading carrier….We could play zone against Texas, roll coverage to Shipley, NOT have our linebackers turning their back on the QB, and play 5 against the rush…I just cannot see Texas beating a top defense solely with McCoy and Shipley as the only weapons….If their running game suddenly improves, then that changes things. But right now, Texas is fairly close to, but not completely, a one-dimensional team.
