Top-ranked Florida could be without one of its best pass rushers against No. 2 Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game.
Defensive end Carlos Dunlap was arrested early Tuesday and charged with driving under the influence, just days before the biggest game of Florida’s season.
NBC Sports: Florida DE star arrested days before 'Bama tilt
I know we already have a fanshot up discussing a lot of this, but I wanted to make sure you we got up a blurb on the front page to make sure everyone saw it. I have no clue on what happens in this situation, but at the very least this is not good news for the Gators. Dunlap is a beast, and was probably a future first round draft pick before this.
Comments
Do you really expect meyer to suspend him...
after all he only suspended spikes for 1/2 game for trying to deliberately cause serious damage to the georgia player, and that was only because they were playing vanderbilt next. my guess is that nothing happens to dunlap until they can determine what really happened…a day after the SECCG.
ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!
Bingo
Meyer will claim he is still gathering information on the situation and no action will be taken until all the facts are known. And yes this will not happen for another week. At that time he will be punished internally and be allowed to play in NC game if they beat Bama. If they end up in the Sugar Bowl he will be suspended for that game and he will turn Pro.
The difference between this infraction
and the aforementioned ones is that Dunlap was arrested and charged. The DUI charge nullifies Meyer’s “We’re going to gather more information” line because the damage has already been done. There’s nothing to investigate. I am curious to see how Irving Myers spins this.

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.
Agreed...
… though I still expect him to play somehow.

Sadly, I think he'll probably play also.

My thought...
My thought is that if Urban really thinks we have a legitimate chance of knocking off his Gators, Dunlap will find a way to play.

Dealt with a baseball player’s DUI last year by kicking him off the team. The Administration kicked him off of the team. Only once the charges were finally dropped was he reinstated. We’ll see how it all works itself out when Meyer speaks to the media after practice today.
Roll Tide! Beat the Gators!!!
Nothing will happen untill the courts have descided his fate. Innocent until proven guilty
Your temper brings dishonor to my happy mooshu palace.
Really?
He was found passed out at the wheel. Brandon Spikes wasn’t found guilty of attempt assault before he was suspended. Just because some activity is also criminal doesn’t mean we have withhold common sense.
Keep in mind, though...
That Spikes essentially suspended himself…

FWIW,
I was reading over at Alligator Army about this (didn’t comment, Todd :) ), and they said that apparently Meyer doesn’t make the suspension decisions on DUI’s. Apparently it’s up to the administration or athletic department or something.
It is done...
…that way to keep the coach from looking like he was involved in the decision. I would not really buy too much into it though, as I am sure whay Meyer says goes, just like any other major program.
Cause I'm sure...
…there’d be a near riot in G’ville if a baseball player were suspended/kicked off the team.
Here is what I want to know...
… how drunk was he?
I haven’t seen anything official on a BAC just yet, but from the sound of things he had to be really smashed. When the officer found him he was passed out behind the wheel, and when he got him up he had “difficulty speaking and listening to instructions.”
Think about that for a second… here’s a 6’6, 250 pound freak of an athlete, and he was so drunk that he passed out and had trouble talking. Literally too drunk to even talk. Just based on all of that, it sounds to me like he wasn’t just blowing a .09 or something, he was absolutely smashed. And to me, a situation like that demands a more harsh punishment than your typical DUI offense.

That has actually been a concern of some Gator fans
Their thinking is basically it is unlikely that Dunlap went out drinking by himself. What does it say about their focus if he had teammates with him partying the Monday before the SECC.
sounds kinda like that guy who played for the Raiders
who went AWOL on a drinking bender the day before the super bowl a few years back.

Isn't refusal to submit to a breathalyzer equivalent to pleading guilty?
I seem to recall hearing that somewhere.

most unhealty time of my life
eating nothing but Dominos, playing Resident evil 3 and listing to smashing Pumpkins Ava adore ( i know its the worst album) in the dark sad time in my life. Needless to say I dropped out that semester and ate so much Domino’s I can never eat it again. I more then once got stuck behind a guy who had gone to sleep at the train tracks by jacks after closing Egans. I would get out and try to wake them up and try to get them to call someone to pick them up, but they either would not wake up or cuss me. You make your own bed and they chose turd pillows.

prolly a state thing
in Arizona if you make them get a warrant to draw your blood, then you forfeit your license for like a year regardless of what the blood says. if the blood says you got alcohol in your system, you still get a DUI.

One more point...
According to his official bio on the Florida site, Dunlap was born on February 28th, 1989. That means he is only 20 years old, so he’s underage to boot.

But without the breathalyzer...
They cannot PROVE (given the definition of the word) that he was drunk or had been drinking. That’s the way I see it spinning anyway.
"There's a lot of blood, sweat, and guts between dreams and success" - Coach Bryant
They can still prove it
The prosecutor would put the cops on the stand, and they would testify to everything in the article – bloodshot eyes, asleep at the wheel, inability to talk, etc – to prove he was drunk. The breathalyzer is considered very good evidence, but would you, as a juror, find a reasonable doubt if presented with the cops’ testimony? Seems pretty clear to me.

Agreed...
But the vital piece of information that I left out to validate my point was that UNTIL his court date, this will be spun as no big deal because they cannot prove he was drunk (i.e. this could have been caused by a reaction to pain killers, etc.) without the breathalyzer. So if this is the case, it will not affect his college football career if the powers that be don’t want it to. By Jan. 10 (his court date, if I’m not mistaken) his college career will be over anyway, and it will no longer be a UF issue.

This should IN NO WAY change Bama's focus and intensisty on this game.....
getting some fault sense of security will trip up Alabama’s mission.
Got that winning feelin'
He'll be out
They won’t make an official statement until after today’s practice this afternoon, but there’s no way Dunlap will be on the field on Saturday. Every player under Urban Meyer who’s been arrested and had the charges stick (i.e. not dropped) has missed at least one game, and there’s enough evidence here to figure out that these will. You don’t doze off while a police officer is talking to you in your car at any time of the night unless you are under the influence of something.
Even if Meyer didn’t want to suspend Dunlap (which is unlikely), the university president would overrule that very quickly. He’s been on an anti-alcohol crusade since he walked in the door five years ago, and there’s no chance he’d let someone arrested for DUI play the same week.
Whether it comes from the coach or administration, Dunlap ain’t playing on Saturday. No way, no how.

That’s just one more motivation to stay out of the Sugar Bowl. I can hear Saban saying something to the effect of:

I honestly think anything
less than a game would have created a media storm against the Gators and Corch Meyers, that COULD have cause more distraction than letting him play would have created benefit….if that makes any sense.

The biggest difference between these programs...
If this had been, say, Rolando McClain, there would be no wondering what CNS would do. He’d be gone, no questions ask. In fact, Saban would probably be looking for a DeLorean so he could go back and suspend his ass for the entire season.
Carlos will play.
Just wait and see. Myer will kick him off the team on Jan. 10.
