Coaching Carousel

I know everyone is jacked up about the SECCG, but I figured instead of another Bama vs. FLA post I would ask a question of all my fellow Bama fans. Who do you think is going where after the end of the season? As far as I know, the only head coaching job that has been filled is the Memphis job by (now) former LSU assistant coach Larry Porter. Any ideas on any of these? Roll Tide!

Notre Dame - Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, Brian Kelly?

[if any of those three leave, who goes to OU, UF or Cincy?]

U of Louisville - Jim McElwain?

U of Virginia - I have no idea on this one...could Tubberville stay in Orange and Blue???

Will Rich Rod get the box??? If so, who would replace him???

Any others that I missed???

Tubberville

Doesn’t seem like the UVA type to me. The UVA people I know would wrinkle their noses at a Barner in charge.

I was thinking how cool it would be if (not wishing this part, but if it happened) McIllwain left and we had Charlie Weis as our OC. What a team that would be. Surely we have the funds to pony up as any NFL team?

Kelly is so, so gone

From the Y! article:

From his players on whether Kelly has spoken to the team:

"He hasn’t addressed it at all," Guidugli said. "I guess we would have liked to have seen him address it—like he says, keep everything in the family — but he hasn’t addressed it, so I don’t know."

On the speculation RE: ND

see...

this is the same problem Saban ran into…what the hell is the right answer? If he denies it, then takes the job..He’s an ass. If he says he doesn’t want to talk about it..he’s an ass. If he gives an answer like he did above…he’s an ass. There is no right answer in this situation where he comes out looking like a good guy…

I thought addressing the team would be helpful at least...

he’s not even talked to them…it doesn’t have to be “i’m going” or “I’m staying”, but to not even address the elephant in the room is what’s freaking them out. These aren’t pros, they’re kids.

Kirby Smart to FSU DC

Wrote this on November 5th…

I personally believe the signs point to Alabama’s Kirby Smart as FSU’s Next DC. Why Smart?

1. More money at FSU (5 or 600K)

2. Connections to Tallahassee and his family is nearby (Smart’s parents live in South Georgia, just a stone’s throw from Tallahassee).

3. Smart coached at Florida State and loved it, reportedly.

4. Chance to mold the defense in his own image— total autonomy and schematic freedom.

5. And with that autonomy, the chance to get credit for doing so and turning around one of the bottom 30 defenses in the country. No matter what, Bama’s defense will always be Saban’s.

6. Not having to work for Nick Saban (Guys want to work for Saban only long enough to learn all he has to teach, then they get out. He’s terrible to work for and treats his guys like crap. Also, families of Saban’s coaches typically don’t enjoy it.) Fisher could be slightly less insane than Saban and still be effective. Smart has a great relationship with Fisher even after the Greg Reid recruiting stuff.

7. Quicker path to a head coaching job. Saban has not done a good job of promoting his assistants for head coaching positions. Smart would have to know that if he turns FSU’s defense around (likely, given the current cluster that is the defensive staff), he’d be one of the hottest commodities in the country, especially given that he learned from two organizational masters.

Other ties I won’t delve into.

No matter who it is, the next DC will be of the Saban defensive mold. There isn’t a defensive system that is close when it comes to the college game.

So I predict that there will be big changes in less than a month, and those changes will be known to the public. If I had to say it right now, I’d say Kirby Smart in, Bobby Bowden out.

1 prediction down, one to go…

Not a bad analysis...

….and I could definitely see it happening, but I also wouldn’t be shocked at all if Smart stays with Saban until he gets a HC offer. The title shuffling before last season was a move to keep Smart happy and on the staff, so obviously Saban values having him running the defense.

No...

…while he and Steele were still there they shuffled titles around (Steele had some crazy title like Executive Head Coach-Defense while Smart was the Defensive Coordinator, or something like that). They were “co-DCs” in name though each still pretty much had the same function as before (Steele LBs and Smart DBs), but Saban gave Smart a fancier title and more money to keep him

I agree with this, It would improve his HC stock tremendously.

I have heard Fulmer to UVA

I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . . DBT

If they wrinkled their nose at Tubs

who is, occasionally, articulate, I’m fairly certain that Fulmer’s quasi-literate schtick won’t play very well in Charlottesville. Plus, I am reasonably sure that the blue bloods won’t at all buy into the players with the criminal and/or moral proclivities that Fulmer will recruit. Lousiville makes a lot more sense for him.

Heard a few things...

*McElwain or Malzhan to Louisville (not much of a stretch)
*If ND aims to high and gets burned (i.e. waits until after bowls to speak with Urban, etc.) and has to drop a few rungs in the talent pool to get a decent coach, Tubbs is a viable target. (Paraphrased from Tom Lugenbil this morning on WNSP-Mobile)
*UVA goes without a coach next year, cuz no one wants the job.
*Fisher to FSU (going out on a limb here, but remember you heard it here first, folks)
*Major Applewhite to Assistant Vice Offensive Coordinator for the Scout Team at Texas (a promotion from Pseudo Deputy Chairman in charge of 4th String Running backs Disciplinary Issues).

That’s what I’ve got; keep this one in your back pocket for when all this comes to fruition.

If ND is targeting defense

they could do far, far worse than Tubs.

That was Tom's point...

since that was one of the senile ND AD’s keys to the next coach. Of course, he also stated (in perfect line with the book, Coach Speak) that ND had not even started persuing candidates until Weiss’ canning was final. If that’s the case, ND is in lots o’ trouble from the top down. That would be program suicide if they didn’t have an ace in the hole and a joker up their sleeve at this point.

Of course, there is a HUGE problem with Tubs

If our friends in the retarded hinterlands Barn are to be believed, Tubs was a lazy recruiter*, and there were several advantages: strong conference, in-state talent, FL and GA nearby, and he still didn’t get it done. At the Dome, he’d have to recruit nationally. Not a great fit for someone who’s not a relentless recruiter.

*_an argument I don’t buy considering the subterfuge and secret flights he undertook to outbid tennessee recruit Carnell

I also wouldn't be surprised.....

…to see Georgia go after Kirby Smart, since he is is a Georgia alum. Richt is under a lot of pressure to make a change at DC and I think the dog fans would love to get Smart. I don’t know what the salary might be compared to FSU but probably comparable. Any thoughts?

by AtlBamaGuy on Dec 2, 2009 12:01 PM CST reply actions

Of course they're going after Kirby

But that is a lateral move, at best.

He and Richt didn't get along after Mark made him be the RB guy and he wanted to coach defense.

Kirby worked hard but didn’t agree with it.

I also think Mark’s complete lack of attention to detail and work ethic would not mesh well with Kirby. He simply doesn’t put football first, it’s the Bowden method, and it doesn’t work unless you have a tremendous talent advantage.

On a serious note...

Just saw some legit rumors concerning Fulmer to Louisville.

Word on the

street is Krispy Kreme is pushing for Fulmer hard, and offering a big donation to the school if they hire him. They will also sponser all pre/post game meals.
