The Case Against Ingram Winning the Heisman..
Earlier in the week I commented that if Ingram didn’t win the Heisman, I’d be pissed…very pissed. Perhaps it was the lingering high after watching his dominating performance in the SEC CG or maybe it was just the Alabama homer in me....but I really wanted him to win.
After taking a step back and looking at a few things, I have in fact changed my mind. It’s not that I don’t want him to win the supposedly "Most prestigious individual award in all of sports" (according to Mike ‘n Mike) but there are reasons why I feel he shouldn’t win..
1. It’s the freakin Heisman.
From Ingram himself:
Q: You could win the Heisman Trophy next week. Has that sunk in?
MI: It would mean a lot to Alabama; the coaches, the players, the fans, the state. I’d be happy to do that for them. You dream of that stuff when you’re little. I saw Reggie Bush win it; I saw Ricky Williams win it. The fact that it might be reality is a little overwhelming.
Now, I’m neither a Heisman hater nor a Heisman lover. This is actually the first time since ’99 that I even cared. So, this isn’t about me feeling the award is crap, or that the winner is "overrated". The Heisman voters don’t always get it right. In fact, they probably get it wrong most of the time. Picking the "Most Outstanding Player" in all of College Football is a task that’s virtually impossible to do.
There are so many factors that go into what makes a player "outstanding" i.e. what conference he plays in, what kind of offensive/ defensive scheme he plays in, what his role is, what type of competition he faces week in and week out etc. This year is about 1000 time harder than most. Why? Well, you have 2 QB’s, a DT, and 2 RB’s all up for one prize. All have different styles and play in different schemes. Choosing the best out of this group, and expecting to get it right, is impossible.
So I guess what I’m saying is this…. A lot of "outstanding" players got left out of this year’s "race". It’s an honor Ingram has been invited, but there are bigger trophies out there…especially one in Pasadena.
2. I’m not sure he is the "Most Outstanding Player" in D-1.
Ingram is 12th on the NCAA individual rushing charts. There are 4 freshmen ahead of him and one QB. So that leaves 6 other RB’s that had better overall statistics than Ingram. Does that mean he isn’t one hell of a player? Um NO... Does that mean I’d trade him for any other RB in the country? That would be a HELL NO! It just means that he might not be the best RB in the country…So if he’s not the best RB in the country, how could he win the Heisman?
3. He’s only had five 100 yard rushing games in '09.
I was watching "The Herd" this morning (i know i know) and Colin threw this stat out and I was like…Huh, that can’t be true? …So I went over to the Rolltide.com stats page and damn sure if he wasn’t right. Maybe cause it was the 248 yard game against USC, the big run against MSU, the great game against Va Tech or the damn near perfect game against UF…I don’t know, but I thought he had more than 5. Now he came close against N. Texas (91) and Tennessee (99). Looking back, Auburn stopped (hurt) him, UT contained him, he missed a start due to sickness (FIU), and was pulled early in a few blowouts. If Saban was a stat whore, Ingram would probably have ungodly numbers. But Saban isn’t and Ingram doesn’t. Which goes to show the "team" atmosphere we preach so much about around here is legit.
So, he only "dominated" (in terms of stats) 5 out of the 13 games he’s played in this season. That stat blows my mind.
4. The distraction from preparing for the real prize.
This one is the biggest for me. Yes I know, he’s already part of the festivities. So there is no way to avoid that distraction. But if he doesn’t win, he won’t be bothered by the media before the game nearly as much as the winner. Also, it gives Colt just one more thing to worry about.
Also, It’s a well known fact that lately, when the Heisman winner plays in the NC game, he doesn’t perform all that well. So I’d rather see Ingram lose the Heisman and ‘Bama win the National Championship any day of the week…and twice on Sunday.
Look, if he wins, then well done sir! It will be the first for the Tide and will only help in building towards the future. BUT...with everything on the line, it might just be best if he doesn't....
**EDIT**
Its been brought to my attention that my stats are wrong. Thats what i get for trusting Colin Cowherd. I guarrantee you it will never happen again. Ingram did in fact have 8 100 yard games. I knew that stat was wrong when i heard it. Not sure why rolltide.com has that wrong...but they do...i apologize for giving out misinformation.

Heisman QB flops, sure.
Reggie Bush, the last Heisman winning RB, had 279 all purpose yards in SoCal’s losing effort to Vince Young. SoCal losing was hardly the fault of it’s reigning Heisman winner.

Just looking at rushing numbers will not give you a complete view of Ingram.
If you include receiving stats, he’s virtually tied with Gerhart at the top.
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

no doubt...
and its really hard by just look at stats…Football isn’t exactly a stat driven sport like baseball. You also have to take in account that Trent took a lot of carries away from him. Thats why i noted that Saban isn’t a stat whore and wasn’t willing to get his star player hurt…
That said, its still hard to compare one RB to another.

Five 100 yard rushing games?
The ESPN stats page shows eight games with over 100 yards rushing. He has had five games without 100 yards rushing.
Two of those games were FIU and N. Texas where he was only given 10 and 8 carries respectively and taken out in junk time. Against Tennessee he was only one yard short of 100 and averaged a solid 5.5 YPC. The only games where he was actually shut down on the ground were Auburn and Arkansas. I don’t think this is a very telling stat.
If thats true
and it looks like it is…why would rolltide.com have this posted..
has five 100-yard rushing games this season

That's incorrect.

And Colin Cowherd doesn't know how to fact check.
Even when the correct stats are on his employer’s website. Just another reason why he sucks.
i just don't get why its wrong on RollTide.com
I seriously was about to send Colin an email when i heard him say it live…after i checked rolltide.com…i was like..shit..

11%?
It’s hard for me to believe 11% of Bama fans don’t want Ingram to win. Some of you are unbelievable. Of course if you’re Barners or followers of UT or the corndogs, it makes perfect sense
its about whats best for the program..
of course if he wins ill be 100% happy for him and sing his praises on the roof tops…im just putting together some thoughts on why he shouldn’t win it….

wouldn't that be n=33?
And the sample is biased, including only Alabama fans who post on this blog

To get a CI I need a population size...
Um… how many Alabama fans are there in the world?

here's how I look at it
If he wins…..
I’m happy obviously that a Bama player won. Although I think the Heisman is mostly a sham, it is the most famous individual award in American team sports, and as an Alabama fan of course I want our team to win whatever it is. At the same time, I am concerned that it could distract from our preparation for winning the only trophy that really matters. 5 of the last 6 Heisman winners have come from the #1 team. 4 of those 5 lost to the #2 team in the title game. Possibly coincidence, but I think it is a distraction.
If he loses…..
I’m unhappy that we lost a chance to win it, but again, I think the award is mostly all about hype, so it wouldn’t hurt my feelings. And of course I think it could give us a motivational boost heading into the game. Like McClain said, we can’t spend the next 4 weeks thinking we’ve already accomplished great things and patting ourselves on the back.
So in sum, I won’t be too happy if he wins, or too disappointed if he loses. And if I was king and had to choose the winner, I suppose I’d have to choose the Bama player. I just personally don’t think the Heisman means much and I’m not going to change my tune just because a Bama player finally wins. Either way I’ll be watching and supporting him because a win would be historic.
couldn't agree more

After watching tonight's awards show, I have lost all faith...
in Ingram winning anything outside of the National Championship…..
I’m ok with that !!
Got that winning feelin'

that he reads the Huffington Post. That did it for me. I will never watch/listen to him again.

With the logic of last night's award show...
Ingram’s performance against Auburn should help his heisman hopes. With Colt getting top player and top qb after a 9 sack, 1 td – 3 int performance in the big 12 biggest game, well nothing would surprise me Staurday night.
Got that winning feelin'
Toby Gerhart
did anyone else notice he sort of looks like he has downs syndrome? If there’s any bias for good looks and personality, it should benefit Ingram :)
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

Not to be hyper-sensitive
and I know you were just kidding, but the down syndrome comparison isn’t very cool… If someone looked like the elephant man and put up the best numbers in the country against top defenses, I’d think he should win the Heisman. Gerhart put up gaudy numbers by playing complete games against the 89th toughest defensive schedule…. that is why I think Ingram should have won, not Gerhart’s small eyes.
Agreed.

In my mind we have a lot of trophy winners
The O line who have stepped it up, Javy. ST and in the secondary, Trent always worked hard for the extra yard. Cody , not as many tackles(they won’t run his way) but with blocked kicks at crucial times. Ro, the D-Qb. Reamer always giving all, everytime out. Julio, not great stats, but have you noticed his blocking skills. GMac, that toe dance to get the first on the Gators. Maze has been huge. The list goes on.
This whole team has stepped up big under CNS. Whether he wins it or not he is a winner in my mind ,as well as the rest of the team. Don’t know if it will be Sat nite, but I believe he will get a trophy along withthe rest of the team.
Good luck Mark.

Every Bama fan
should want Ingram to win. I mean come on, he is from Alabama.
But, the big deal is will this distract form the NC game and could this cause Ingram to choke? I would say an Ingram win would be a distraction but it would not cause him to choke.
As a distraction can it be overcome? Sure. It will require more focus by Ingram and Alabama. But this game is so hyped Bama will need great focus anyway. Hopefully Saban will be able to keep the team focused.
As far as causing Ingram to choke I just don’t see it. Ingram has only chocked once in his career- the fumble against UT. The Auburn game was not Ingram chocking as much as Auburn having a good plan to stop him and us not adjusting very well.
There is one other question. If Ingram wins, but is not really hot against Texas (for whatever reason) does Saban have the courage to sit the Heisman winner and go with Richardson or Upchruch? Well yes. This is Nick Saban we are talking about.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
totally..
If winning the Heisman didn’t take anything away from his preperation or focus, then i would have absolutely no problem with him winning.
And i believe 100% that Saban would yank him if Ingram was playing poorly. I just wonder how long it would take? 2nd, 3rd, 4th quarter? But i just don’t that happening to Ingram. One bad game out of 13 aint bad.
