Quick Thoughts On The Texas #1 Rush Defense
Texas is the FBS #1 ranked rushing defense allowing an average of 62.15 YPG. When I first saw this I began to wonder if Bama would have great success against The Horns. So I did a little leg work and found out a few interesting facts about Texas and the Big 12 conference.
First off many people consider the Big 12 a pass happy conference infested with spread offenses and Heisman QB's. There hasn't been an immersion of a dominate RB in this league of Heisman QB's and star WR"s. So how hard is it to amass great statistics against the run if no-one commits to it or recruits the players needed to make it a success?
In 2009 the Big 12 had only one RB who averaged 100 YPG. Kansas State RB Daniel Thomas has averaged 105.42 YPG. If Thomas were in the SEC his yardage totals would put him in 10th place just ahead of Mississippi State's second string RB Leon Berry who's total is 104.92 YPG. In the SEC there are 11 RB's who have an average of 100 YPG. Oklahoma State leads the Big 12 with 191.75 YPG. In the SEC that same yardage will earn you 6th place behind Kentucky's 193.25 YPG.
Now I understand Texas hasn't had to game plan for a true running attack so far this season. They never played their conferences number 1 rusher. I'm trying to give true respect to the stats and Texas's #1 rushing defense. Texas did hold Texas Tech to -6 yds rushing but on a mere 18 attempts. I however can't find the evidence where a Texas opponent has committed to the run with a Heisman finalist and #3 in the backfield.

As a Texas fan
I’d have to say I agree with the point made about about what kind of run game our #1 rushing D has had to defend. It makes me wonder, for sure. I would also have to wonder the same about Alabama’s pass defense. Would you say the SEC has truly tested the Tide’s passing D?
Should be a good balance between the two. Curious to see how well we can stop Ingram and TR. It would behoove us to force McElroy to throw, assuming our secondary can hang with Jones & Maze.

Arkansas has the 10th ranked passing offense in the country....Result
Ryan Mallett 35 for 12 160 yds 1 TD 1 INT 34% Completions
Alabama 35
Arkansas 7
Arkansas Rushing – 26 Attempts for 38 YDS
Not bad huh? Considering Texas is the # 14 Passing offense and Arky is 10th

not to mention the performance against a heisman winning, dual threat QB last weekend.
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

sure
Wasn’t really trying to contest the original point being made, but whatever does it for you.
My thought is that there are some balances that can make it interesting. Another being Bama’s #84 passing offense. As I mentioned, if we can stop the run, I feel pretty good about limited McElroy.
Also, I realize Bama’s strength and will make no attempt to talk up some crap about how you’re going down. I do, however, anticipate a good game.

my biggest fear is Shippley taking a punt/kickoff to the house.

That's my biggest fear right now as well . . .
. . . given the yardage we’ve given up over the last three games on kick coverage.

You didn't see those plays
where he threw two footballs at once and they were both caught? It was pretty impressive

Type-o, this should read Mallet 12 completions on 35 attempts. I should have forseen NiceLittleSaturday having a laugh at my expense (before NLS gets me - "thats what she said")

Can't Tell
what’s going to happen. I’m just jazzed up about Bama being in the hunt again. I do like Bama’s chances against the Horns. It’s about time to reverse that streak they have on Bama. I also will not asume anything. Texas’s record against Bama speaks for itself. It just seems that everything is falling into place for the Tide this year. And the outlook for the future looks quite promising also. Roll Tide/Saban Tsunanmi Roll!
I believe this is untested ground for the BIg 12...
is known for it’s passing. By the looks of the Oklahoma game, that can’t defend the pass either. The backup qb had 327 yds. in the 16-13 loss.
I also believe that Texas won’t know what hit em’ on Jan. 7. Nebraska’s defense compares to a middle-of-the-pack SEC defense. I’m taking anything away from Suh, but the Big 12 doesn’t play defense. The only reason Texas is ranked #1 on rush defense is because they don’t rush.
Got that winning feelin'
RE: NU defense
they are not “middle of the pack” by any stretch. Their LBs aren’t great, but the front 4 is phenomenal (and has depth), and the corners can cover, even if they are guilty of not looking for the ball.

Bama should hold tejas to 10 points or less, barring points from special teams and turnovers.

10 points...
…requires special teams points…unless our defense is getting five safeties (which would rock).

If you want a realistic comparison...look at last years NCG
Team: Florida Oklahoma 2009 Alabama Texas verses last years NCG opp. in ’09

Comp-Att 18-30 26-41 12-18 21-39
Yards per pass 7.7 6.0 19.9 6.0
Rushing 249 107 251 142
Rushing Attempts 44 29 39 32
Yards per rush 5.7 3.7 6.4 4.4

Interceptions thrown 2 2 0 1
Possession 34:57 25:03 39:37 34:32
Like it or not, this is the cold hard facts which translates to TCU would have been a better opponent.
Got that winning feelin'
kinda hard to read ut i thank you for these stats.
i see Bama averaged almost 20 yards per attempt vs fla and over yards a carry, plus we had only 1 penalty and 0 turnovers, as well as the most rush yards and fewest yards allowed. those are good categories to lead the stat race in.
we’re going to utterly destroy tejas

This came off of Burnt Orange Nation...
“I believe that if Alabama comes onto the field in Pasadena expecting to see the same Texas team they’ve seen for the last two weeks, they are going to be quite shocked at the whirling ball of butcher knives they run into.”
Their fans are as delusional as their coach, totally oblivious.
Got that winning feelin'
to be fair, that is true
But we have no delusions about what Texas team we’ll see, and it won’t be the one we’ve seen everywhere.
Bama must prepare to
play a Texas team that will be much better than the Big 12 championship.
And by the way, UF saw Bama vs. Auburn and thought they had it in the bag.
We should not think Texas will be as bad as they were against Neb. We need to give them tremendous respect.
I hate the NCAA more than UT & AU combined. At least with UT & AU you got a fighting chance.
Agreed
They may be untested against huge rushing teams, but that doesn’t mean they’re not good at stopping the run. You don’t get #1 in the nation without being good, Big 12 or no. I do think if we plan correctly and do our jobs, Ingram and Richardson can put up more rushing yards than they’ve seen all year. But it’s not like they’re going to roll over and give it to us. They’re a great team. They’re beatable, but it will take a lot of work.

They are active
and fast in the front four, which is where the bulk of their disruption comes from. However, the back 7, especially the secondary, isn’t very physical in run support. We need to get to the second level. And, with a front four that speedy, but undersized, it’s going to be a war of attrition…and, back to the way Saban likes it: “Make their ass quit”

2 TE's, 3 good RB's, add in the use of cody and huber here and there and we cover up their front 4
and create enough room for #22, #3, and #5 to really make some hay. and by that point we’ve got maze and julio open all day long on play actions. dink and dunk, runs between the tackles followed by 30 yard PA td passes. bama rolls in the same manner they did vs Fla only it’s not as close.
