Heisman Trophy Presentation Open Thread

In a few short hours we'll know if Mark Ingram will be bringing the Heisman Trophy back to Tuscaloosa. By most accounts it's a tight race with Ingram currently the front runner, but anything can happen so tune in to find out. ESPN will air an hour long presentation starting at 7:00pm CST, so share your comments on the proceedings and joy/outrage with the results here.

UPDATE: Ladies and gentlemen, we have a Heisman Trophy winner. Congratulations to Mark Ingram. He certainly deserves it.

I'll be the first

I’m at dinner with the in-laws so I could use a few updates here and there. Preferably good news but will take it all.

Ingram will win it, but he shouldn't

I think Ingram will win it because he has decent stats and plays on the best team in the country. Personally, I think Suh or Gerhart should win it. Nobody will vote for a defensive lineman and no white running back on an 8-4 team will win it. Ingram is a good player but he isn’t even the best player on his own team. Also, I have heard from many people that there were other guys on ‘Bama who could have put up the same numbers if they played instead of him. I also don’t think Ingram should win it because Heisman trophy winners don’t get benched against their arch rival. Anybody who watched that game knows Ingram did not suffer a hip pointer he got benched, it is simple as that. Also, it takes more than 8 days to fully recover from a hip pointer no matter how small it is. The fact is Ingram might not even be the full time starter next year. He might split carries with Richardson or some other big time recruit who comes to ’Bama. Good solid player on a great team but not a Heisman trophy winner.

There was a firefight!!!!

Serious response:

If you say it should go to Suh, fine. No problem. If you say he’s not the best player at Bama, that’s fine, too. I agree. But he’s at least as good, if not better, than Gerhart, and the numbers bear it out. When you look at their total yards, rushing and receiving, they have essentially the same number of yards. Gerhart has more TDs, but Ingram has more receiving TDs (3 to 0) and more yards per rush. Ingram, however, had to play against ‘big boy’ defenses in the SEC, whereas Gerhart got to run wild vs. the wacky Pac 10.

I don’t know who will win. I don’t like the trophy. I think Rolando McClain is the best player at Alabama, and Suh is a beast. Just don’t try to sell Gerhart, a fine player on a good team, over Ingram, a great player on a great team. Peace out.

Here, here

Nicely put. I’m really sick and tired of all this, “if Ingram wins, he’ll be the weakest running back to do it” garbage. The kid has had the best sophomore season in the SEC since Bo Jackson and has put the offense on his back on more than one occasion. He is the leading rusher in arguably the best defensive conference in the nation while sharing carries. Enough said.

No muscle flexes, sideline dashes or screaming fits could save the Gators' 22-game winning streak. The second-ranked Crimson Tide turned their long-anticipated SEC Championship Game rematch with No. 1 Florida into a three-and-a-half hour bludgeoning, punching their ticket to the BCS National Championship Game" -- Stewart Mandel--Sports Illustrated

Nice summation

But Suh may be a beast but he’s only being discussed because the ESPN mothership suddenly made him the pick de jour. He’ll make someone happy as hell on Sundays but I can’t take it seriously for Heisman since wasn’t I the discussion until he got 1/3 of his stats in ONE game agaisnt the day before’s Golden Boy.

showing ur ingnorance

the fact that ingram stood out on a team with the horses like bama has should qualify him for at least a look. this is why bama has never had a heisman winner. they have always had more than one stud to split the load. a guy may be the best athlete but when another very good athlete is there you have to get him the ball too for development if for no other reason.

Wow.....

I hope you are joking about this…….The Suh comment is the only thing you said that is close to being coherent…….to say that Gerhart should win it over Ingram is an absolute joke……Gerhart is a fine running back – that can’t be denied…….he had 311 carries for 1736 yds and caught 10 passes for 149 yds scoring 27 touchdowns – an average of 5.6 yds per carry…..he did not face one single defense ranked in the top twenty in total defense……his 4 biggest games were against Washington, Oregon, USC, and Notre Dame…..In total D these teams were ranked 79th, 43rd, 32nd, and 87th……On the other hand, Mark Ingram had 249 carries for 1542 yds – an average of 6.2 ypc and caught 30 passes for 322 yds and had 18 touchdowns all while sharing carries with Trent Richardson, who had half as many carries as Ingram…..the next closest Stanford player had 1/5 the carries of Gerhart……Ingram did this while facing four defenses ranked in the top twenty in total defense…Ingram’s four biggest games were against South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Ole Miss and Florida….In total D these teams were ranked 15th, 14th, 24th, and 4th……you are either a Stanford homer or a assclown auburn fan……either way you should STFU and GTFO……your arguments are horseshit and I’m quite certain that the team you pull for is also horseshit…….Oh, and by the way, you are a giant douche……

Suh is so very good, no denying that

but watching his overhyped highlight reel, you start to realize that they could have done the exact same type of reel about McClain or any of several other dominant defensive players in the country. That said, he’s the only candidate I can see making a case for deserving it as much as Ingram.

by bamabrian on Dec 12, 2009 7:22 PM CST reply actions

Ah, still....

… I’m glad to see him getting the credit and the publicity. This historical notion that the Heisman should only be for offensive skill position players is complete and total bullshit, and that notion should be immediately killed.

And honestly, in all fairness, I do think he’s the best interior linemen we’ve seen in college football in many years. To me, he’s even better than Dorsey was at LSU.

Honestly, to me...

… Dorsey was really overrated, for the most part. He didn’t start until he was a junior, and while he had a big junior season, the senior campaign didn’t even come near the hype (even taking the injury into consideration).

To me, he was really just a product of the LSU Hype Machine. He was a very good player, but not the once-in-a-generation player that the hype made him out to be. I think it says a lot of him that he really struggled in the NFL as a rookie, and that the Chiefs actually tried to trade him earlier in the year.

The thing I love about this Bama team

is that our schemes and our style is almost so basic that it’s hard to really pick much of anything up on film to prepare for them. Almost all of Saban’s packages look the same pre-snap. Our offense is a power run, play action pass offense, built on strength and physicality. How do you honestly scheme for a team whose entire philosophy is built on physicality? There are no tricks, no frills. To beat Alabama you have to match them physically.

Gerhart

as a running back raises an interesting question. For a long time, many people thought a lot of black quarterbacks were prevented from having an opportunity to play the position because of an unspoken racial bias.

I think there is an unspoken racial bias against white running backs that exists. When Gerhart was coming out of high school, even though he was the best back in the Inland Empire in thirty years, every team except for Stanford wanted him to play linebacker. I think this is a pretty common approach a lot of coaches have when a running back is white. It’s just like the coaches who used to move every black quarterback to receiver or the secondary.

well he sucked against good defenses

while Ingram had his best games…..

No reason for that to change….

Unless they get unfocused which I think Ro and Saban would be bitch slapping people to get them back in line…

If you don't like us dancing

keep us out of the end zone. My high school coach was a Miami grad and former GA. He wanted to put 60 on every damn team we played.

MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--

BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.

there was this coach at alabama a while back who had another saying...

“when you get to the end zone, act like you’ve been there before.”

Funny shit...

… this marks the third straight weekend that we denied the Barners the chance to roll Toomer’s Corner.

Immediately following on ESPNEWS he went off on how a) Ingram was not the best running back OR single player, the system was flawed, and it was all about reputation.. blah blah blah

Time for more Barner spin.

They’ll be bragging about how their defense shut down a Heisman winner in their moral victory.Next year I hope he smokes em.

Never had one ounce of doubt!

Told you Nice Li’l Saturday. McClain and Ingram. They played the best on Saturdays, and I actually watch East and West coast teams. (tongue firmly in cheek, so don’t get all hot and bothered y’all) I’m serious on being the best on offense and defense. (give or take a boy named Suh)

I’m Bix and I approve of these comments!

turns out his daddy was right, this world is rough and if you’re gonna make it you gotta be tough, so thats why his daddy named him Suh.

It's a great day!

…..I can tell you that any reasonable Auburn fan is very happy today for Mark Ingram. Great job! The national vote is a huge tribute to the SEC, no two ways about it! Gerhart had nearly twice the TDs, and Ingram got the vote. We can no longer whine about national bias against the South, in college football, at least.

……Great job, Ingram. It’s a well-deserved award.

Classy post.

"So I want everybody to think here for a second, how much does this game mean to you? 'Cause if it means something to you, you can't stand still. You understand? You play fast! You play strong! You go out there and dominate the man you're playing against, and you make his ass quit! That's our trademark! That's our M.O.... as a team! That's what people know us as!" - Coach Nick Saban before the 2008 LSU game.

What a great day for Ingram..

Man what a close vote count. 28 points..wow..The best part is he’s only a sophomore. Over/ under on how many yards he has against Texas? Im thinking 120 running, about 30 receiving.
